GUITAR THEORY: Mastering Your Scales & Modes
www.creativeguitarstudio.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I would like to know how to improvise more melodically over a chord progression in any key; being aware of the scales and mode positions for the shapes along the length of the neck that one can use to solo over a specific chord. And, how to pick out the chord tones and strong notes - ie resolving a lick/riff to the root and including the chord notes, etc... Also, some advice on practicing the scales/modes around chord progressions would also be ideal. - Ashley Smith -- England A: There is no doubt that Practicing scales and modes is certainly vital for developing a strong ability to solo melodically. However, there are many players like you that are finding difficulty with developing this skill. The key to tapping your full potential in this department will have to be the mastery of several concepts... 1). Practicing scales with a goal in mind of stretching your skills with them. In other words, never get stuck into a rut of constantly practicing scales day-in / day-out in the exact same way. 2). Learning other players; lines, guitar licks and phrasing styles. So, what I'm saying is, find a handful of guitar players that you really dig and learn at least an album's worth of their rhythm and lead lines. Yes, you heard me correctly -- I said Rhythm & Lead. 3). Practice composing melodies when you practice improvisation. It is simply not enough to sit around working on ...

Allan Holdsworth - Chord Scales
Tab: www.mediafire.com Found this video online and can't seem to find it on youtube. Seeing Allan Holdsworth's lessons online is a rarity, even with the fact that the whole world is able to upload videos online. Basically, Allan is talking about using diatonic chords of a key, in other words, harmonizing the scale. Theory: The reason Allan picked the key E major after he introduced the E major 7 chord is because the Emaj7 is the tonic of the "E major" scale.

GUITAR THEORY: Jazz Minor Scale
www.creativeguitarstudio.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I am a little bit confused about Minor scales. I got an old guitar book from my uncle and it has a part in it about Jazz Minor scale. After researching this online, I think this is Melodic Minor. But, is there a difference between them? Can you please explain Jazz Minor scale? Your websites and YouTube channel are great -- thanks for all of the lessons! - Sheldon, Toronto Canada A: The Jazz Minor and the Melodic Minor Scale are pretty much one in the same. In traditional theory, (or Classical theory), the Melodic Minor is viewed as a Natural Minor scale with raised 6th and 7th tones. Under this theory system the scale ascends with this construction, however when the scale descends, the 6th and 7th tones return to their original pitches (as found in Natural Minor). The Jazz Minor however, is the Melodic Minor Scale but with the 6th and 7th steps raised both ascending and descending. How to Practice Scales
Andrew answer's the questions... "You touched on the CAGED chord theory, but can you tell me the scales that go with the chord shapes; 1. 2. 3. 4. 5 ?" Thanks, Colin Smith England ----------------------------------------------------- "I have been practicing the major scale positions on the guitar in the key of G and Ive learnt all 5 positions over the fingerboard. I understand that these positions are movable across the fingerboard but, I fail to understand why I would want to learn so many positions? How should I make the best use of the memorized major scale positions to improvise and create music. I dont want to be able to play all of the scales, but not be able to make any music out of them." GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I've been getting heavy into learning Jazz this year and I'm really digging into the scales and modes, and recently I came across a scale called Harmonic Major. I've heard of Harmonic Minor before, but never of Harmonic Major. I did a search online, but that didn't help me too much and I was hoping you could maybe make a lesson about Harmonic Major... Thanks for all of the great lessons every week! - Woodrow, Battle Creek, MI. A: Harmonic Major isn't a scale you'll run into all that often, but if you take some time to study it, you'll likely find that a few really nice ideas can certainly be generated from it. This scale is essentially nothing more than a major scale with the 6th degree lowered. And, I think you'll find, this scale produces several really nice chord types and melody possibilities for not only jazz, but several other styles too. Be sure to visit www.activemelody.com to download the tablature and MP3 Jam track for this lesson for free. This lesson gives a brief overview of the major and minor pentatonic scales on the guitar, which are (in my opinion) the only 2 scales you really need to know well. You can play just about anything with these 2 scales (in fact, they're the only scales I know!). I give some examples using each scale and explain how the major pentatonic scale is the happier sounding scale, versus the minor pentatonic scale which is more sad (also referred to as the blues scale). MUSIC THEORY: The Harmonic Minor Scale
www.creativeguitarstudio.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I am a new subscriber and your lessons are helping me a lot... I cannot thank you enough! My question is, Can you please cover the Harmonic Minor Scale. I keep hearing about how it is so widely used but after playing it, I cannot seem to get it to sound good over anything. I mostly would like to know where and when I am supposed to be using it. My favorite style of music is the contemporary jazz style. I purchased your album off of your web site and I'm sure that I hear you use it in your music. By the way I love your album. Hope you make another one soon. Thanks, Zack Paris, France _______________________________________ THE HARMONIC MINOR SCALE: This scale is a form of Minor which contains a raised seventh degree. The raised seventh offers a leading tone for strong resolution toward the scales tonic. This makes resolutions occur with far greater pull than is possible with the Natural Minor scale. The video explains the scales' basic structure and design. Viewers are shown two fingerboard patterns off of sixth and fifth strings. Then, there is a thorough explanation of the harmony and how chords can be used in progressions to utilize the sound of Harmonic Minor. The complete lesson article for this video, (along with an MP3 audio jam track of the progression heard at the start of the video), is available on the Creative Guitar Studio website.
