The western US state of Arizona has enacted the toughest immigration law in the country aimed at cracking down on hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants. Barack Obama, the US president, has called the law "misguided" and expressed concern over possible civil rights implications. UPDATE June 10th 2010 We've been saying that it's section E, E1 and E2 under 11-1051 on page 1 which contains the exchange of law abiding citizens data with homeland security. The "final" version of the bill has it in section F, F1 and F2. Everyone I'm bccing have put E, E1 and E2 in their analysis. Please change that to F, F1 and F2 and link using the link above which is the most up to date version. I fully expect that once cogent criticisms of the above version circulate in the news, that Pearce will "find" the "real" final version of the bill and we'll get another version switching sections around again. Just be prepared. But right now, the provision handing over law abiding citizens data to homeland security, thereby turning Arizona licenses into national ids, is in 11-1051 F, F1 and F2. These four videos document the impact of SB 1070 and other immigration policies on the lives of immigrant families in Arizona, and the growing national efforts to end these violations of human and civil rights. SB 1070, signed into law by Arizona Governor Brewer in April 2010, made it a crime not to carry documentation at all times -- and gave local police broad powers to detain anyone they suspected of possibly being undocumented. The videos show the chilling terror that has kept families prisoners in their own homes, and children in fear of losing their parents to surprise detainment and deportations. Women and children have been particularly affected by this law, but have also been in the forefront of fighting for their human and civil rights, and young people have become some of the strongest spokespersons for this resistance movement. "If you look at the drastic reductions in homicides and auto theft crimes that occurred in Phoenix, I mean, we'd be stupid not to look into those things," Gary Blankinship of the Houston Police Officers' Union said. HOUSTON -- Would an immigration reform law like Arizona's work in Texas? That was the topic of discussion Thursday when some HPD officers met with police officials from Pho More..enix. The Phoenix officers were in town presenting information on why their controversial law would work here in the Lone Star State. Mark Spencer, president of the police union in Phoenix, where officers are already allowed to call immigration officials, said crime has dropped. "It's not based upon race. It's based upon conduct," Spencer said. "The clear connection between those statistics is the crime of illegal immigration. We needed to be proactive [and use] common sense." Support for similar legislation has spilled into Texas, and some state lawmakers plan to make a push for a law in January. "We've got to secure our borders. We've got to do what is necessary to make sure that the safety and security of the citizens of Texas is well-established," State Rep. Debbie Riddle (R-Tomball) said.
