This launch comes after 2 failed attempts to launch, after a red weather condition on upper level winds. The Atlas V was in the 551 configuration with 5 SRBs. The MUOS-1 Satellite is for the United States Navy and will provide narrowband tactical communications for US forces on the move, providing over 10 times more communications capacity over existing systems, including simultaneous voice, video and data.
Russian Phobos-Grunt Satellite Reentry
Russia's Phobos-Grunt satellite, launched on November 9 and originally intended to be well on its way to Mars by now, is expected to reenter the Earth's atmosphere in early 2012. Most of the spacecraft will burn up in the atmosphere, although some pieces may survive reentry. Using AGI's analysis and visualization software, AGI aerospace engineers created this video depicting: • Planned Phobos-Grunt mission • Resulting low-Earth orbit • Communications to ground stations • Estimated debris region • Burn-up at reentry Although it is still too early to predict the time and location of the reentry, estimates will become more refined as the event draws nearer. NASA | Behind the Scenes at the Satellite Servicing Center and Robotic Lab
NASA's highly anticipated Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM) began operations on the International Space Station with the Canadian Dextre robot and RRM tools March 7-9, 2012, marking important milestones in satellite-servicing technology and the use of the space station robotic capabilities. A joint effort between NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), RRM is an external station experiment designed to demonstrate the technologies, tools, and techniques needed to robotically service and refuel satellites in orbit, especially those not built with servicing in mind. RRM represents the first time the space station's Dextre robot is used for technology research and development, moving it beyond robotic maintenance of the orbiting superstructure. Like our videos? In late March 2011, NASA's Swift satellite alerted astronomers to intense and unusual high-energy flares from a new source in the constellation Draco. They soon realized that the source, which is now known as Swift J1644+57, was the result of a truly extraordinary event -- the awakening of a distant galaxy's dormant black hole as it shredded and consumed a star. The galaxy is so far away that the radiation from the blast has traveled 3.9 billion years before reaching Earth. Most galaxies, including our own, possess a central supersized black hole weighing millions of times the sun's mass. According to the new studies, the black hole in the galaxy hosting Swift J1644+57 may be twice the mass of the four-million-solar-mass black hole lurking at the center of our own Milky Way galaxy. As a star falls toward a black hole, it is ripped apart by intense tides. The gas is corralled into a disk that swirls around the black hole and becomes rapidly heated to temperatures of millions of degrees. The innermost gas in the disk spirals toward the black hole, where rapid motion and magnetism creates dual, oppositely directed "funnels" through which some particles may escape. Particle jets driving matter at velocities greater than 80-90 percent the speed of light form along the black hole's spin axis. In the case of Swift J1644+57, one of these jets happened to point straight at Earth. Theoretical studies of tidally disrupted stars suggested that they would appear as flares at optical ...

Planet Earth 3D in HD: A beautiful time elapse image of the Earth, taken in a single shot by Russia's latest weather satellite Electro-L, has enchanted Internet users around the world. The images were obtained beginning on May 14th, and end on May 20th, 2011. (2x original video) The images are a combination of visible and near-infrared wavelengths, depicting the Earth in a way not visible to the human eye. For example, the planet's vegetation looks red. So far, these 21 megapixels depict the highest resolution Earth images even made. That's 60 miles of the earth's surface packed into every pixel. The Corona satellites were used for photographic surveillance of the Soviet Union (USSR), the People's Republic of China, and other areas beginning in June 1959 and ending in May 1972. The name of this program is sometimes seen as "CORONA", but its actual name "Corona" was a codeword, not an acronym for anything. The Corona project was pushed forward especially following the shooting down of a U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union in May 1960. The Corona satellites were designated KH-1, KH-2, KH-3, KH-4, KH-4A and KH-4B. KH stood for "Key Hole" or "Keyhole" (Code number 1010), and the incrementing number indicated changes in the surveillance instrumentation, such as the change from single-panoramic to double-panoramic cameras. The "KH" naming system was first used in 1962 with KH-4 and the earlier numbers were retroactively applied. There were 144 Corona satellites launched, of which 102 returned usable photographs. The procurement and maintenance of the CORONA satellites was managed by the Central Intelligence Agency, which used cover arrangements lasting from 1 April 1958 to 1969 to get access to the Palo Alto plant of the Hiller Helicopter Corporation for the production.
