US Senate approves Iran sanctions

On Monday The US Senate unanimously approved a package of new economic sanctions on Iran's oil sector just days ahead of a meeting in Baghdad between major world powers and Tehran. The House of Representatives passed its version of the bill in December and now the Senate and House must work out their differences in the legislation. The West suspects Iran is working to build a nuclear bomb and the sanctions are meant to strip Tehran of revenue by shutting down financial deals with Iran's powerful state oil and tanker enterprises. Iran has said its nuclear program is for civilian purposes. In a statement from Republican Senator Mark Kirk, a co-author of the bill, he states that the Senate put Iranian leaders on notice that they must halt all uranium enrichment activities or face another round of economic sanctions from the United States.

Harsh on Iran: 'Sanctions disgusting, hit ordinary people'

The European Union has expanded its sanctions against Iran, freezing assets and adding more officials to a visa blacklist. It cites 'serious human rights violations' for the measures - which follow other similar penalties over the Islamic republic's nuclear programme. The US has just drawn up a list of countries which are to be cut-off from the American financial system - if they don't reduce Iranian oil imports within 6 months. Meanwhile, Israel says its threat of a military strike on Iran is stopping it from building a suspected nuclear bomb. Tehran maintains its atomic programme is for peaceful energy purposes only. But the US is against an imminent attack on the Islamic state - believing it would drag the whole region into war. President Barack Obama has signed an executive order introducing sanctions on people and entities in Syria and Iran, that use technology to target their citizens and perpetrate human rights abuses. India to neglect sanctions on Iranian oil

Despite the new round of US and EU sanctions on Iran, India has said it would do what ever it takes to buy the Iranian oil. Finding a replacement on such a large scale is difficult as Iranian oil contributes to about 12 percent of India's oil imports. Press TV' s Sanjay Sethi reports from New Delhi.

Rand Paul Blocks Iran Sanctions

Senator Harry Reid tried to pass a new round of Iranian sanctions through the Senate without allowing any debate or amendments, but the vote failed because of a block by Senator Rand Paul. Paul aimed to add an amendment that would make sure the use of any military force would have to get Congressional approval. There are more than 80 retired military officers that have written a letter to Congress urging the body not to go along with Paul Ryan's plan and cut 6 billion dollars from development and diplomacy, while simultaneously beefing up defense. But why are these voices, those asking for diplomacy, the minority? Scott Horton with Harper's Magazine weighs in. Twitter: twitter.com www.facebook.com

Why does the EU join in sanctions against Iran?

The European Union has now joined the US and Canada in sanctions against Iran. The sanctions are an attempt to prevent Iran from furthering their nuclear enrichment program. Despite Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta admitting that Iran is not making nuclear weapons, the futile sanctions continue. The EU makes up for 20 percent of Iran's oil exports and many experts believe Iran won't feel the effects of the sanctions. Build up to WW3 - US will Sanction CHINA for BUYING IRAN OIL!

Build up to WW3 - US will Sanction CHINA for BUYING IRAN OIL! The US State Department has revealed the list of 12 countries which may be subjected to American financial sanctions for failing to cut oil imports from Iran. The number of countries was mentioned earlier on Tuesday, as Washington announced a penalty waiver for Japan and 10 EU counties which complied with American demands and reduced their purchases. However, the names of the countries were not given. Four of the countries on America's anger list are among top 100 buyers of Iranian crude. They are China, India, South Korea and South Africa, with the first two being the two largest buyers. Also targeted by possible financial sanctions are Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Turkey. US President Barack Obama may order banks based in those countries and involved in oil trade with Iran to be cut off America's financial system. On the other hand, he may exempt some of them from sanctions, if US national security demands it. So America's allies like South Korea or Pakistan may dodge repercussions. Meanwhile China on Thursday slammed America's pressure on Iran's trading partners following the exemption of Japan and European countries from penalties. The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the ruling Communist Party, called the US policy misguided and selfish. "One stand-out feature of unilateralism is this: that one's own rules become the world's rules. Everyone must ...

Iranians react to proposed EU sanctions

European foreign ministers are expected to impose a ban on Monday, on Iranian oil imports into the European Union. But the prospect of new sanctions does not appear to worry too many people in Iran. Many feel import restrictions will have a big impact on some of the EU's already cash-strapped economies struggling to keep their heads above water in the eurozone crisis if they follow the US's lead, causing a major spike in the global price of oil. Al Jazeera's Dorsa Jabbari has reaction from Tehran.

Sri Lanka feels pinch of Iran sanctions

Sri Lanka, which relies heavily on imports of Iranian oil, is feeling the impact of US-led sanctions on Tehran. Rising global prices, due in part to US-led sanctions against Iran along with the weakening of the Sri Lankan rupee, have led the price of kerosene to rise 49 per cent, diesel 36.9 per cent and petrol 7.7 per cent in Sri Lanka. Adding to Sri Lankan frustration is the fact that the South Asian nation's only oil refinery works best with Iranian light crude. Colombo is also unable to receive payment of approximately $25m in lieu of tea sent to Iran due to the sanctions that began last June. Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernandez reports from Colombo, where some say smaller nations are the hardest hit by tougher sanctions against Iran.

What do US sanctions on Iran mean for the world?

One of the main issues of US foreign policy today involves how America is handling Iran's nuclear program. For the Obama administration the answer is sanctions, and this weekend the latest round is set to go into effect. It will target transactions made with the Iranian central bank. This summer the sanctions on Iranian oil will come into effect - meaning that if you buy Iranian petroleum, you'd be blocked out of doing any business with any financial institutions in the US. This measure will upset other countries who rely upon Iranian oil and also it could mean a dramatic spike in oil prices in the US, which would not only hurt consumers, but could also severely hurt President Obama's chances of being re-elected in November. Ron Paul: 'Sanctions on Iran is an Act of War!'

I rise in opposition to this motion to instruct House conferees on HR 2194, the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act, and I rise in strong opposition again to the underlying bill and to its Senate version as well. I object to this entire push for war on Iran, however it is disguised. Listening to the debate on the Floor on this motion and the underlying bill it feels as if we are back in 2002 all over again the same falsehoods and distortions used to push the United States into a disastrous and unnecessary one-trillion-dollar war on Iraq are being trotted out again to lead us to what will likely be an even more disastrous and costly war on Iran. The parallels are astonishing. We hear war advocates today on the Floor scare-mongering about reports that in one year Iran will have missiles that can hit the United States. Where have we heard this bombast before? Anyone remember the claims that Iraqi drones were going to fly over the United States and attack us? These "drones" ended up being pure propaganda -- the UN chief weapons inspector concluded in 2004 that there was no evidence that Saddam Hussein had ever developed unpiloted drones for use on enemy targets. Of course by then the propagandists had gotten their war so the truth did not matter ...

Path to War? Assassination of Iran Nuclear Scientist, New Sanctions Strain US-Iran Relations

www.democracynow.org - Iran says a nuclear scientist involved in its uranium enrichment program was killed by assassins in Tehran on Wednesday, becoming the latest Iranian scientist to die in a series of similar incidents. Earlier this week, Iran announced it had sentenced a US-born man to death for allegedly spying for the CIA. Meanwhile, the United States is leading a global campaign to shut down Iranian oil exports in order to pressure the country to end its alleged nuclear weapons program. Iran responded by threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, a major transit point for one fifth of oil traded worldwide. "If we are increasing the sense of threat, we may be able to prevent [the Iranian's] capabilities to a certain extent, but we're also increasing their desire for the nuclear deterrent," says Trita Parsi, founder and president of the National Iranian American Council. 12/2/2011 In Congress: Ron Paul Condemns Iran Sanctions Bill As Prelude To War

ronpaulyes.blogspot.com War with Iran has already been decided by the powers that be and the modern-day quasi-declaration happened last Thursday. Using the same legislative and propaganda playbook that led to the Iraq War, the US Government has just officially declared War on Iran. Reuters reported "Congress on Thursday approved tough new unilateral sanctions aimed at squeezing Iran's energy and banking sectors, which could also hurt companies from other countries doing business with Tehran. The House of Representatives passed the bill 408-8 and sent it to President Barack Obama for signing into law. The Senate had approved it 99-0 earlier in the day." Congress hasn't officially voted for a Declaration of War since World War II. In modern times they use creative wording in bills that authorize the broad use of force across borders in the sweeping "War on Terror." The Bush Doctrine of preemptively attacking countries because they may pose a threat to America in the future was universally trashed by progressives, but is alive and well under Obama, the Prince of Peace, without one dissenting vote in the Senate. This authority is what the Obama Administration claims also gives them the legal argument to bomb sovereign countries like Pakistan. This unilateral decision by the United States Congress comes on the heels of a 12-2 UN Security Council vote on June 8th to impose a "modest tightening of sanctions" against Iran. Of course, Russia and China have been assured that ...
