How To Do A Salchow Jump - Figure Skating help/tips - Ice Skating moves.
Sorry about the recent help video overload, havn't skated since the competition almost a month ago, so ive been pretty bored lol. The single salchow is the second jump you will learn in skating, someing after the waltz jump/three jump. Its taken off a back inside edge and landed on a back outside edge. There are two ways to enter a salchow, from a 3-turn (as explained in this video) or you can also do it from a mowhawk, which a lot of more advanced skaters prefair. If you need to know how to do it from mowhawk let me know and I'll make another video explaining that entrance too. --- Please note: I am not a qualified figure skating coach. All the advise I give is purely from my own personal experience with my own figure skating, and helping other people. Please try this at your own risk.
1895 - 1920 Ulrich Salchow WORLD CHAMPION Sweden
Ulrich combined an outstanding competitive career, with a lengthy period of volunteer and administrative service to the sport. (We had a nice post of him skating in 1910 for a long time, but it has since unfortunately been removed). With the exception of Sonja Henie of Norway, no one has compiled a greater record of competitive success. Although actually born in Denmark, he emigrated to Sweden at a young age and always competed for them. Swedish Champ in 1895, he place second at the 1897 World Championship. After seconds again in 1899 and 1900, he won his first title in 1901, followed by 9 more (1901-05, 1907-1911 -- he was injured in 1906). Also winner of 9 European titles. He won the first Olympic men's title in London in 1908, and surprizingly was Defending champion at age 41, when the Games were resumed after World War I (placing second in figures and fourth overall). The event was won by fellow Swede Gillis Grafstrom with Norways' Andreas Krogh and Martin Stixrud 2nd and 3rd). Salchow's competitive career spanned 25 years. Elected President of the ISU in 1925, he served until 1937, also judging....presiding over the 2nd Golden Age of skating development, which featured the skating of Sonja Henie, Karl Schafer, the Brunet's, and Maxi Herber and Ernst Bauer. He helped bring the 1932 Olympics to Lake Placid. He wrote an early skating book explaining the modern International style, with Albert Stille. Well, if we were trying to encourage a record company to take an interest in today's new band with a few pithy words, we might describe them as "Joy Division fronted by the Blair Witch". Because that's the impression we get from their gloomy disco rumble, their trebly, throbbing basslines and primitive machine pulsebeats, and the overall atmosphere of cold noir-ish menace provided by enigmatic frontwoman O's eerie croak, a voice that makes her sound like the "star" of the aforementioned forest chiller. At the very least, think Marianne Faithfull circa Broken English breaking into the studio as Throbbing Gristle recorded 20 Jazz Funk Greats. Hence their use of unrevealing, blank, pseudo-anonymous names and shrouded, shadowy press photos. Internet videos of the trio comprise a series of silhouetted shapes materialising then disappearing just as rapidly back into the darkness, while reports of their live shows are of the vague, nebulous variety: hushed, awestruck dispatches from the lips of a select minority of converts and disciples. Miki Ando was HOT at this practice .... nailing triple lutz triple loop combinations and this amazing quad salchow .... looks pretty clean to me ... it looks like her last qtr rotation was not cheated ... rather her knees bend so much she kindda "slid" under it? haha I might be just imagining ... Expert opinions?

Elite Skater's Jump Technique Salchows
I've gotten tired of hearing X skater has bad jump technique because they pre-rotate their jumps and they take off forwards and blah blah blah, so this is a video with 5 different skaters doing triple salchows. I included Brian Joubert, Yuna Kim, Mao Asada, Joannie Rochette and Evgeni Plushenko. For each skater, you can see that the toe-pick does not fully leave the ice until the skater is facing forwards. I plan on making one of these videos for each of the 6 jumps

New Skates! Axels, double salchows, double toe loops, spins.
I adore them. :D They are Edea Fly boots, and they're incredibly light. So everything obviously feels really different - not only the height, but also the kick throughs and landings. It's nice not to have everything controlled by these huge, heavy pendulums on my feet. :P Everything obviously feels really different, but I think it will be better when I get used to it.

Sorry for the delay getting these back up. I have no excuse other than laziness, so go ahead and yell at me :D The salchow is an advanced ice skating move that involves taking off from a left backwards inside edge and jumping, landing on one leg. This video takes you through a salchow jump step-by-step with tips from me. A little like Expert Village (expertvillage) but with more detail. Enjoy, and good luck skating!

1977 Tracy Prussack Triple Salchow (first sbs) SloMo Proof
There was some debate (on my earlier post) as to whether or not Tracy Prussack completed three revolutions in a video of their 1977 US Nationals appearance. As I said, the problem was with my video camera not picking up her quick rotation. Here, in slow motion, we see just a classic 'Gus Lussi' salchow (back, side, through with the free leg), with marvelous arm action. Two rotations up, and one on the way down!! Flawless....!!!! If your currently trying to learn this jump, this would be a great mental image to have in your head!!!!
