Dupré Improvising at St Sulpice, Paris

Marcel Dupré improvising on the gregorian theme Veni Creator Spiritus on his instrument in St Sulpice. He clocked up 37 years as titulaire, though this is nothing compared to his teacher Widor, who managed 63 years in the post, leaving when he was 89! It should be noted however, that Dupré was a mere 75 years old when this recording was made :-) The chant Veni Creator Spiritus (Come, Holy Spirit Creator) has been attributed to Rabanus Maurus (776-856), it is often used on important occasions, such as a consecration of bishops and ordinations, coronations etc. It is sung to commemorate the feast of Pentecost. This recording was made by Netherlands radio in 1961, and NCRV radio has a substantial archive available free on the web for those that want to visit, www.orgelconcerten.ncrv.nl. I 'borrowed' this one from their broadcast from St Sulpice, which has three other pieces, of which the sublime Franck fantaisie I will post later. Dupré's improvisations were extraordinary, but perhaps a little clinical or academic for some, Vierne was heard to say upon hearing him improvise for the first time, 'That sounded composed!' He could improvise double fugues, toccatas and ricercares at the drop of a hat, and more remarkable, he said he found it rather easy! From what I can gather, this recording demonstrates a typical Dupré offering. There are plenty more rare & interesting recordings to come...

St.Sulpice Organ

A movie about the Great Cavaillé Coll Organ of St.Sulpice. The recordings are made in the week of 28th of agust and on sunday the 28th. (With camera and Ipod Ipro recorder) It is not the best recording, but it gives a impression of the organ and it's environment. Impressive! Organiste Sophie-Véronique Cauchefer-Choplin playes during excersise Bach and for me a unknown piece. On Sunday Jonathan Hope played during the sunday Organ Audition Marcel Dupré (Allegro Deciso,Evocation Op.37) During the 12h mass Sophie-Véronique Cauchefer-Choplin played Gabriel Pierné's Prelude (from his 3 pieces) many thanks to the friendly people of the St.Suplice and to Sophie-Véronique Cauchefer-Choplin

Marcel Dupré plays Carillon at St Sulpice

Marcel Dupré plays his own Carillon from Sept Pieces (Opus 27) in St Sulpice, Paris. This stereo recording from the Mercury label was made in 1959, the transfer was made from mint condition LPs (not master tapes) to CD by those clever people at Haydn House. The transfers from the LP are nothing short of remarkable, considering the master tapes are either lost or unavailable. I will put up the Final from Sept Piéces and a Prelude and Fugue Op36 from the same CD another time. In due course I will put up some relatively unknown recordings by Yves Devernay, Thierry Esciach, Leonce de St Martin, Pierre Cochereau, Xaver Varnus, Pierre Pincemaille and Jean Guillou amongst others.

This was during the second mass at St. Sulpice when Daniel Roth, the titular organist, allows people to come up to see the console and watch as he plays. Latin Mass by Vierne recorded at St. Sulpice with Propers

In October of 2007 JAV Recordings recreated Easter Sunday Mass at Saint-Sulpice from the time Vierne and Widor. The Vierne Mass was sung by the Choeur d'Oratorio de Paris directed by Jean Sourisse, accompanied by Daniel Roth and Eric Leburn. All of the Propers was sung by the Choeur d'Oratorio de Paris directed by Thibaut Marlin, accompanied by Eric Leburn on the choir organ. Daniel Roth provided beautiful improvisations in a style of the early 20th century on the Gallery Organ and he and Eric Leburn joined in dialog improvisation on both organs in Saint-Sulpice at times. The soloists were: Edward Schaefer, priest; Hervé Lamy, deacon; Sébastien Amadieu, sub deacon. This video was recorded with separate microphones from those used to make the recording, but this gives a small idea of what happened on those 4 nights at Saint-Sulpice to make this landmark recording. The expected release date of this Surround Sound recording is Spring of 2008. Joe Vitacco President of JAV Recordings, Inc. www.pipeorgancds.com

St. Sulpice, Paris - Les Grande Orgues - Easter 2010

We attended Easter mass during our Paris trip in order to hear the magnificent pipe organ at St. Sulpice, played by the equally magnificent Daniel Roth. The beginning of the video was shot on my iPhone before the 10:30 service started. Then during the noon mass we were allowed up to the organ loft to see Mr. Roth at the console. I switched to the HD vid camera in my camera. Mr. Roth is improvising the music you hear, playing from a small book of what appeared to be old church melodies written in a notation I didn't recognize. The occasion was also noteworthy because it was the 25th anniversary of Mr. Roth's tenure as the organist at St. Sulpice.

DANIEL ROTH IMPROVISE A SAINT-SULPICE

St. Sulpice Paris Pipe Organ Dupré Plays Messiaen

Le Banquet Celeste -- one of Messiaen's more accessible pieces. I've spent 40 years trying to decide how I feel about his music. I know I SHOULD like it. True story. In early 1972, my hometown (Washington, DC) was all abuzz. Or at least the Washington Catholic community was. Messiaen was coming to town to play the World Premiere of his "Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity" [now there's a title to warm the cockles of a good Catholic's heart ;-) ]. As a lapsed Methodist & an organ-lover, I thought I'd mosey up to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception & see what all the fuss was about. The Shrine, which bills itself as The Largest Catholic Church in the Western Hemisphere, was packed. There must have been 10000 people. It seemed that every priest & nun on the Eastern Seaboard had been bused in to see & hear the French Mystic. The anticipation was palpable. Messiaen started playing, & an hour & a half later, we all sat in stunned silence. We looked at each other & said, in the words of Peggy Lee, "Is That All There Is?" We came expecting musical enlightenment & got 90 minutes of.....bird calls. I've never seen a more disappointed crowd before or since. So I've tended to look at Messiaen through skeptical glasses ever since. Some of his music, like The Celestial Banquet, is magically ethereal. but a lot of it is just plain weird. The Da Vinci Code Soundtrack (VG) - St. Sulpice - Winifred Phillips

"St. Sulpice" was a location from the Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown, which was made into the 2006 smash-hit film starring Tom Hanks, Ian McKellen, Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno, Paul Bettany and Alfred Molina. This video features music from The Da Vinci Code video game soundtrack, released concurrently with the film in May of 2006. The video game was developed by Double Helix Games and published by 2K Games. Composer: Winifred Phillips. Music producer: Winnie Waldron. In The Da Vinci Code, a symbologist is caught in a 2000-year-old web of secrecy and uncovers the truth about The Holy Grail 'a truth that could shatter the very foundations of Western Civilization'. While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. While working to solve the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci -- clues visible for all to see -- yet ingeniously disguised by the painter. Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion -- an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others. In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless ...
