RUBICON : A Legendary Jeep Trail & Off-Road Adventure - Part 1 of 3
The night before our 2010 Project-JK Rockin Rubicon Trail Run, I asked my friend Tom why he wanted to run this trail and he casually responded that "if you want to be an accomplished four wheeler, there are a few places in this world you have to go and one is the Rubicon." Crossing through the El Dorado National Forest up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Rubicon Trail is truly one of the most beautiful ones I've been on bar none. Of course, its unrelenting 22 miles of boulders that need to be crawled, steep ledges that need to be climbed, narrow trees that need to be squeezed between, deep muddy water crossings that need to be forded and tippy off camber terrain that needs to be carefully negotiated is ultimately what makes the Rubicon Trail so legendary and famous around the world. In this first episode, you will see where our adventures began in South Lake Tahoe, our road trip down to the Loon Lake Staging Area, our crawl through the Gatekeeper, descent into the Granite Bowl and climb up Walker Hill and all before tragedy strikes.

Originally made as a single half hour video, RUBICON : A Legendary Jeep Trail & Off-Road Adventure was broken down into a 3 part series, each approximately 10 minutes long and done so that it could be broadcasted on YouTube. In episode 2, we pick-up the pieces of Inyo-JK's Jeep, brush off the dust and continue our trek to Rubicon Springs. Along the way, we pass by the Soup Bowl, take in the impressive views across Spider Lake, descend the off camber granite slabs, tackle the rock obstacles at Buck Island Lake, negotiate our way down the very challenging Big Sluice, add a couple of stock Canadian Jeeps to our group, cross the historic Rubicon Bridge and then, just as we we pull into camp, we hear a call coming in over the CB... it's Trail Bud. Crossing through the El Dorado National Forest up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Rubicon Trail is truly one of the most beautiful ones I've been on, bar none. Of course, its unrelenting 22 miles of boulders that need to be crawled, steep ledges that need to be climbed, narrow trees that need to be squeezed between, deep muddy water crossings that need to be forded and tippy off camber terrain that needs to be carefully negotiated is ultimately what makes the Rubicon Trail so legendary and famous around the world.
Jeep Rubicon and Toyota FJ Cruiser Off-Road in Hawaii
We witnessed first hand the capabilities of both vehicles on the trails. I'm personally a Toyota guy, having owned several Toyota 4x4s, an FJ and now a Tacoma. They aren't evenly matched because the Jeeps articulation and flexibility with the solid front axle, shorter wheel base and being lighter weight. Driver experience, error and patience were also contributing factors in how each vehicle performed. We didn't create this video to make one seam better than the other. Ohana Trails is a Jeep Club here that we were filming and by chance, a group of FJ Cruiser owners were convoying with them. Unfortunately, we had more video of the Jeeps over the FJ's. This film tries to solve the classic brain-teaser "How can you get a wolf, a sheep and a cabbage across a river one at a time, without them eating each other." The rational solution seems fine in theory, but does not work when applied to conflicts in real life. This film was the German entry at the 1998 Cannes film festival, and has garnered a total of thirteen prizes. Footage from the 16th Jeepers Jamboree on the Rubicon Trail 1968. Look what these guys did with almost stock vehicles, with no lifts, oversize tires, or roll bars. Also note how many people they packed into the Jeeps for fun rather than 2 tons of camp gear like we do today.

Here is my Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon on th Rubicon. Well mostly on Big Sluice going uphill. Got denied at this pinch but still had a blast. My friend Bill is with us in his copper CJ. I was glad to see he was denied as well. FWIW I've seen many a broken vehicle on this obstacle so I guess having to go around was better than breaking and being there for a while. Debbie didn't shoot much footage on this trip as the footing was pretty bad and our dog Chase took off and we spent some time tracking her down. Oh well next time I'll get some more of the trail and the scenery of the Sierra's.

Project-JK: Off Road Evolution Conquers the Rubicon Trail Little Sluice
Back in September of 2009, Cindy and I were invited to head up to the Rubicon Trail with Mel Wade of Off Road Evolution and Ali Mansour of Petersen's 4 Wheel Drive & Off-Road and be witness to what would be the first ever run through the Little Sluice Box in a Jeep JK Wrangler. Two attempts were required to complete this extremely challenging section of trail but, Mel was able to conquer it and, you can see how he did it in this short video.

Earlier in the year, I got a message from a guy named David who lives in Canada and frequents JK-Forum.com. In it, he said that he and a few buddies of his were planning a trip down to the Rubicon and was hoping that Cindy and I might be willing to lead them through. Of course, at the time, I didn't know this guy from Adam but, I said "sure" and that he should contact me again when we got closer to summer and, pretty much put it out of my mind. Well, sure enough, as soon as July rolled around, I got another message from David to let me know when he and his fellow Canuks would be down in South Lake Tahoe and, to see if we were still on. While none of us really knew each other, none of us were really strangers either. After all, we were Jeepers and, this is the story about our Maple Honey experience on the Rubicon Trail.

Project-JK Highlights: Rubicon Trail - Off Road Evolution on the Soup Bowl
In addition to the countless boulders, ledges, trees, water crossings, mud, tippy rock faces and tight squeezes that you you have to tackle along the 17 mile length of trail known as the Rubicon, there are still plenty of optional obstacles that you can take on as well and one of the more famous ones is known as the "Soup Bowl". Very tall, uneven and steep, the Soup Bowl is a ledge climb that all but the most capable rigs even bother to attempt and in this short Project-JK Highlight Video, you will see Mel in his Off Road Evolution Jeep JK Wrangler dominate it.
Summertime Snow Wheeling on the Rubicon Jeep Trail
In all the years we have been coming up to Tahoe in the summer, I'd have to say this is the first time that we've seen so much snow stick around for so long. In fact, even though it's July, we had heard reports that the Rubicon Jeep Trail was still covered in deep snow from about the top of Cadillac Hill, down to the staging area near Tahoma and enough so that buggies were only recently breaking trail over the 4th of July weekend. Well, as you can imagine, this was something that we had to see for ourselves especially being that we were planning to run the whole trail with a group of friends in about a week and, this short video highlights the fun we had snow wheeling up the backside of the Rubicon.

Part 3 of RUBICON : A Legendary Jeep Trail & Off-Road Adventure is the last chapter in a 3 part series that was originally made as a single half hour long video. In this final episode, we kick start our morning at the crack of dawn and with a welder in hand. Once repairs are made to Trail Bud's broken front axle housing, we head over to the cool waters of Rubicon Springs and spend some time cleaning up and having some fun. Packed up and ready to roll again, we slowly climb our way up the last real challenge on the Rubicon Trail - Cadillac Hill. At the top, we take in the awesome view, pose for pictures, assess the condition of our Jeeps and then make our way back to civilization down in South Lake Tahoe.
