Jimmie Rowles & Stan Getz : The Peacocks
Jimmie Rowles' composition, "The Peacocks", must be just about my favorite ballad in all of jazz. I never tire of it. It pulls on something in me. This version, featuring Rowles with Stan Getz is the version I like best. "...It came to me when I was driving home from work one night," Rowles said. "I pulled over to the side of the road and wrote down what I was thinking. Then I worked on it the next day and finished it. I'm glad it happened. Always been glad about it." The soft, evocative cascades of notes, heavy with longing and languor, paint a mood picture reflecting Rowles' admiration for such Impressionist composers as Ravel and Debussy. (from the liner notes to "The Peacocks: Stan Getz Presents Jimmy Rowles, recorded in 1975). John Rowles - One Day
John Rowles - One Day lyrics: I close my eyes and I see you now The way once in a while You smile, a tender smile for me But now this smile has gone I'm alone and I lie here on my own Just wishing for the memories that I have known * One day I must find you again, my love One day guess I'll hang on till then, my love May be tomorrow, there'll be an end To all this sorrow I'll find my way, one day * And with this hand, I would touch your face And when you used to cry In these two arms, you'd lie with me But now I have to face Empty years, all the worries, all the fears With a broken heart, let's trying to stop

JOHN ROWLES & HINEWEHI MOHI '2010' - Requiem For A Soldier.
Each year on 25 April -- Anzac Day -- New Zealanders (and Australians) mark the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings of 1915. On that day, thousands of young men, far from their homes, stormed the beaches on the Gallipoli Peninsula in what is now modern Turkey. For nine long months New Zealanders, Australians and allies from France and the British Isles battled harsh conditions and Turkish opponents who were desperately fighting to protect their homeland. By the time the campaign ended, over 120000 men had died: more than 80000 Turkish soldiers and 44000 British and French soldiers, including over 8500 Australians. Among the dead were 2721 young New Zealanders, about a quarter of those who had landed on the peninsula. In the history of the Great War, the Gallipoli campaign made no large mark. The number of dead, although horrific, pales in comparison with the number that died in France and Belgium during the war. But for New Zealand, along with Australia and Turkey, the Gallipoli campaign played an important part in fostering a sense of national identity. 'LEST WE FORGET'
