From Billy at the Beeb DVD of his performance at the BBC in 1978 When I was twelve, in the days before the internet, I heard this song on the radio and proceeded to purchase every last album Billy Joel produced to track it down. I ended up finding it on the last album there was to collect--Streetlife Serenade (1974). Here, the Piano Man lives up to his title in a live performance at the BBC. Fans of Billy Joel will be please to know that he actually still rocks this one live in 2009.

It's horribly complicated, particularly the piano part, although the drum part is very tricky too. One of Billy's VERY best song tunes, and one of my favourites. Billy Joel - "Root Beer Rag"
Streetlife Serenade was Billy Joel's third album, and his second with Columbia Records. Streetlife Serenade was released in 1974 (see 1974 in music), after the hit songs "Piano Man" and "Captain Jack" from the album Piano Man. The album did not enjoy the financial success of its predecessor, and marked the beginning of Joel's frosty relationship with music critics and the music industry in general. In the song "The Entertainer", Joel mocks the callousness of executives who care little about a musician's artistry or even feelings: "I am the entertainer, I've come to do my show/You've heard my latest record, it's been on the radio/It took me years to write it, they were the best years of my life/It was a beautiful song but it ran too long/If you're gonna have a hit you gotta make it fit/So they cut it down to 3:05" "The Entertainer" reached #34 on the charts. The album contains two songs that featured in many of Joel's live shows. He would regularly open the program with "The Mexican Connection" and finish with the short piano-only (and encore ready) ballad "Souvenir."

The TV Crew was checking out equipment, camera positions, lighting etc. for a future show. There was no director or regular crew. Cameras and effects switcher were manned by novices that were just goofing around. These girls were exceptional, so we are glad that the tape was rolling.

There are too many versions of this where it is played too fast. This song must be precise and it loses that once you start to go above 150.

Ten Grands VIII - "Root Beer Rag"
'Root Beer Rag', written by Billy Joel, is performed on stage by all ten pianists. Ten Grands features ten grand pianos and ten concert pianists playing a variety of classical and modern pieces both simultaneously and individually. Traditionally presented just once a year at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, three shows are planned for the 2008 concert season. There were two performances in Portland on April 5, 2008 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, and one show on May 17th, 2008 in Seattle, WA. Concert proceeds benefit The Snowman Foundation, which in turn benefits youth service groups, helps generate scholarships and music lessons for disadvantaged youth in Oregon and Southwest Washington and helps purchase pianos for schools and organizations in need. Seeing as I consider myself a ragtime pianist, I couldn't not at least try to play this, after I heard it on one of Billy Joel's albums. I think this is quite a valiant attempt, if I do say so myself. It took me nine takes to get it to a standard I feel happyish with, so my hands are already killing me by this time. Be nice :) I know there are mistakes!! I may upload a more practiced version at a later date, but I may not be in a position to record videos in a few weeks' time; I am going to university!! A very unique combination of songs, and when I say unique I mean such extreme opposites of the instrumental genre scale. I found that one lead into another, so I went with it. And outside of being performed on a piano that needs a tune-up soooo bad, I think it went well. Both of these tunes were written by the talented Billy Joel with more than 25 years between them. Just goes to show just how versatile that man can be.
