Roosevelt
"It's hard to remember now, but before Social Security, nearly half of America's seniors lived in poverty. After a lifetime of playing by the rules and working hard, there was no guarantee of a secure retirement. "My grandfather, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a majority of Americans thought that was wrong. "They believed that lifting our seniors out of poverty is a reflection of our nation's core values. "That's why my grandfather signed the Social Security act seventy three years ago today. One of the great successes of the 20th Century, today Social Security lifts nearly 13 million seniors and 1.3 million children out of poverty. "Back in 1935, a small minority did not share those values. They opposed the creation of Social Security because they believed that government should not have a role in ensuring a retirement with dignity or helping seniors stay out of poverty. They said, "You're on your own". "John McCain agrees with that old way of thinking. Like President Bush, he wants to privatize our Social Security, turning it into a gamble with our futures, and making 8.6 million American seniors vulnerable to poverty. John McCain has even said Social Security is "a disgrace". "I couldn't disagree more. "Our Social Security isn't a disgrace; it's a compact, a trust between generations of Americans. It's a reflection of our values. "On the 70th anniversary of Social Security, Americans stood together and said no to George Bush's attempt to privatize Social Security. "On ...

Teddy Roosevelt Oath of Office 1905
On Mar. 4, 1905, TR is inaugurated in Washington, DC with much celebration and fanfare. TR rides in an open landau on Fifteenth St., NW, escorted by mounted Rough Riders; Secret Service men and detectives walk on either side of the carriage; TR tips his hat to the crowd. Sitting beside him is Sen. John C. Spooner of Wis., Chairman of the joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. Opposite, but not clearly visible, are Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge of Mass. and Rep. John Dalzell of Penn., members of the committee. Second sequence consists of long shots of TR taking the oath of office on a platform erected on the east front of the Capitol; Chief Justice Melville Weston Fuller (1888-1910) administers the Presidential oath of office as Chief Clerk of the Supreme Court James H. McKenney holds the Bible. The platform is decorated with plants and garlands and a large banner with the American eagle on it hangs from the center of the railing. West Point cadets and Annapolis midshipmen are assembled below the platform.

FDR a date which will live in infamy speech
The Infamy Speech was delivered at 12:30 pm on December 8, 1941, by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, one day after the Empire of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii. The name derives from the first line of the speech: Roosevelt describing the previous day as "a date which will live in infamy". Within an hour of the speech, Congress passed a formal declaration of war against Japan and officially brought the US into World War II. The address is regarded as one of the most famous American political speeches of the 20th century.[1]
The Four Freedoms - Franklin D. Roosevelt
Excerpt from United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "State of the Union Address" to the 77th Congress, January 6, 1941. Pardon the quality, I slapped this together after finding that it hadn't already been done. The fact that I've done so shouldn't be construed as an endorsement of anything in particular -- I simply thought it ought to be on YouTube. Text, audio and image taken from: americanrhetoric.com More info: en.wikipedia.org Transcript: "In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression -- everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way -- everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want, which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants -- everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear, which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor -- anywhere in the world. That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called 'new order' of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the ...

Franklin D. Roosevelt: State of the Union Address (1942)
thefilmarchive.org Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 -- April 12, 1945) also known by his initials, FDR, was the 32nd President of the United States (1933--1945) and a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic crisis and world war. The only American president elected to more than two terms, he facilitated a durable coalition that realigned American politics for decades. FDR defeated incumbent Republican Herbert Hoover in November 1932, at the depths of the Great Depression. FDR's persistent optimism and activism contributed to a renewal of the national spirit. He worked closely with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin in leading the Allies against Germany and Japan in World War II, but died just as victory was in sight. In his "first hundred days" in office, which began March 4, 1933, and beyond Roosevelt spearheaded major legislation and issued a profusion of executive orders that instituted the New Deal—a variety of programs designed to produce relief (government jobs for the unemployed), recovery (economic growth), and reform (through regulation of Wall Street, banks and transportation). The economy improved rapidly from 1933 to 1937, but then relapsed into a deep recession. The bipartisan Conservative Coalition that formed in 1937 prevented his packing the Supreme Court or passing any considerable legislation; it abolished many of the relief programs when unemployment diminished ...

Theodore Roosevelt - The River of Doubt, Part 1
Summary Film is Roosevelt Memorial Association compilation of footage from TR's 1913-1914 trip to South America during which he combined a series of lectures with an expedition in the Amazon Valley of Brazil to collect zoological specimens. The Roosevelt group was combined with a group of Brazilian scientists under the leadership of Col. Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon to explore the course of the uncharted Rio da Dúvida, the River of Doubt. In 1926 George M. Dyott, an English explorer, was asked by the Roosevelt Memorial Association to retrace TR's voyage down the River of Doubt and to film his trip in order to supplement the footage from the 1914 trip. There are shots of Roosevelt's party on board the Vandyck; left to right are: Anthony Fiala, George K. Cherrie, an ornithologist, Father John A. Zahm, a friend of TR's, TR, Kermit Roosevelt, Frank Harper, TR's secretary, and Leo E. Miller, a mammalogist. TR and his wife, Edith Roosevelt, alight from a small steamer and are met by a uniformed official; location may be Rio de Janeiro. At what is probably the Rio de Janeiro harbor area, there are shots of TR walking, preceded by reporters; TR, with three unidentified men, waves from a carriage; TR is seated in a trolley car, the man next to him (closest to camera) may be Edwin V. Morgan, American Ambassador to Brazil; long shot of the Monroe Palace. On the steps of the Guanabara Palace, Lauro S. Müller, Brazilian Foreign Minister, TR, and others pose. Shots of TR and party ...

Franklin D. Roosevelt Speech (WW2 in HD Ending)
The Spirit of man has awakened The Soul of man has gone forth Grant us the wisdom and the vision to comprehend the greatness of man's Spirit that suffers and endures so hugely for a goal beyond his own brief span We are all of us children of Earth Grant us that simple knowledge If our brothers are oppressed, then we are oppressed If they hunger, we hunger If their freedom is taken away, our freedom is not secure Grant us a common faith, that man shall know bread and peace That he shall know justice and righteousness, Freedom and security, an equal opportunity, and an equal chance to do his best, not only in our own lands, but throughout the world. And in that faith, let us march, march toward the clean world, our hands can make. Amen -Franklin D. Roosevelt, June 14,1942
