Every year daring competitors throw themselves down a death-defyingly steep hill in Gloucestershire, England, in a bid to win a coveted Double Gloucester cheese, and this year's event was no different - with a number of competitors incurring injuries. Download the track free here - soundcloud.com I wanted to do something a little different with a cover of Rolling in the Deep, since there's a lot of them out there, and mostly with acoustic guitar or keeping the same kind of arrangement as the original. So, I opted to do something that's very garage-rock feel, and I kept it very simple - piano, bass guitar with heaps of fuzz on it, and acoustic drums with a single room mic that's compressed all to hell (so yes, they're supposed to sound like that). This was all shot in my roommates' garage, who have about a zillion things lying everywhere, so while it's a mess, it's fairly photogenic. This was all shot with natural light or one light in the garage. We used a single light for one shot and that was it. Shot on a Canon t2i and a Panasonic Lumix GH1 with a variety of lenses. We picked a pop tune at the top of the charts -- one that wouldn't be an obvious candidate for an instrumental cover. "Rolling in the Deep" jumped out at us. The writers, Paul Epworth and Adele, described it as a "dark blues-y gospel disco tune." What could be more challenging for a classically-trained cellist and pianist? We locked ourselves in the studio (ok, not literally) and began work on the introduction. It wasn't working. The end. Just kidding...:-) The song came alive when we found a destined matchup in the melody from Gustav Holst's classical piece "Jupiter"—a deep melody that rang out when layered on top of everything we were creating for this arrangement. To make a long studio-story short, it all came together after that. ALL sounds were created by acoustic & electric cellos (5 different cellos) and piano.
