The Lakeside Hammers captain, who has represented a number of English clubs, hit the safety fence while riding for his Polish side Rzeszow in Wroclaw. He suffered a heavy blow to the chest and later died in hospital. Hammers co-promoter Jon Cook said: "I am numb and just can't take this in. Lee's loss to his family is beyond imagination." Hastings-born Richardson, a regular on the Grand Prix circuit between 2002 and 2006, was a former World Under-21 champion and is Britain's all-time World Cup points scorer, collecting 240 points across 10 championships. His final appearance in the Elite League - Britain's top speedway division - was on Friday, when he contributed an impressive 10-point haul to a 59-37 win over his former club Peterborough. The 1997 Elite League Riders champion also featured for Coventry, King's Lynn, Poole, Swindon and Eastbourne during a 17-year career. Hammers owner Stuart Douglas added: "Lee's death is a truly shocking piece of news. "Sometimes the dangers the riders face in this sport are sidelined in the competitive spirit, but this proves just how brave speedway riders are. The collegiate highlight reel of Mr. Trent Richardson, the starting Halfback of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. As a Junior, Richardson averaged 6.0 yards-per-carry, posted 20 Touchdowns, and 1583 on 263 attempts. He posted all of these numbers while sharing carries with backup Halfback Eddie Lacy. Richardson was, during his tenure, bar-none the NCAA's strongest player and most likely its hardest working. He gave maximum effort on every snap and led the Tide to an 12-1 record his Junior season, and a BCS National Title. He was also instrumental as a freshman during the Tide's 2009 National Championship season. His play elevated in "big games" and he refused to submit to any foe. Richardson is truly the manifestation of Nick Saban's coaching philosophy. Richardson was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 3rd overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft. British speedway rider Lee Richardson, a former world under-21 champion, has died following a crash in Poland on Sunday. Richardson, 33, was competing for PGE Marma Rzeszow against Betard Sparta Wroclaw when he went into a safety fence. The Lakeside Hammers captain was taken to a hospital in Wroclaw but died from his injuries, with the Sky Sports Elite League club releasing a statement to confirm the tragic news. "All at the club are devastated at the loss of a great captain, man and more than anything else a wonderful father and husband," the statement read. "Our thoughts are with his family at this most sad of times and we know that all Hammers fans will share our total devastation at this tragic news." Hammers co-promoter Jon Cook added, "I am numb and just can't take this in. "Lee's loss to his family is beyond imagination and I can't see further than that at the moment." Many of Richardson's fellow riders took to Twitter to express their shock and disbelief, world champion Greg Hancock writing, "Unreal news I just heard! It doesn't seem real and another innocent one is gone. Our thoughts are with the whole Richardson Family. RIP Lee." British international Lewis Bridger said, "RIP Rico. Top, top bloke in the sport; I looked up to you so much man. I'm in tears right now. I really don't want to believe this."

Such a huge tragedy. I still can't believe that this happened. Lee died after a fatal accident during a Rzeczow-Wroclaw match in the polish league on may, 13th 2012. 13 maja 2012 roku we Wrocławiu, tamtejsza drużyna żużlowa Betard Sparta, rozgrywała na swoim obiekcie mecz ligowy z PGE Marmą Rzeszów. W 3 wyścigu meczu, doszło do makabrycznego wypadku zawodnika gości - Lee Richardssona. Zawodnik wychodząc z pierwszego wirażu na pierwszym okrążeniu, zahaczył przednim kołem o tylnie koło zawodnika Sparty - Fredrika Lindgrena a następnie otarł się jeszcze o Tomasza Jędrzejaka (Sparta) i stracił panowanie nad motorem. Spowodowało to, że bardzo mocno uderzył głową w bandę. Początkowo uskarżał się tylko na ból w nodze, ale po przewiezieniu do szpitala okazało się, że dostał poważnego krwotoku wewnętrznego i zmarł w szpitalu. Ta wiadomość doszła do Gorzowa Wielkopolskiego, gdzie był rozgrywany mecz ligowy - Derby Ziemi Lubuskiej Stal Gorzów - Falubaz Zielona Góra. Po 9 biegu, kibice zostali poinformowani o śmierci zawodnika. Przez tą zaszłą sytuację, jaka miała miejsce we Wrocławiu, na stadionie w Gorzowie zapadła cisza. Kibice byli wstrząśnięci a nawet załamani. W tym kierunku radykalne kroki musiał podjąć sędzia zawodów pan Marek Wojaczek. Po naradzie, sędzia nakazał kontynuowania zawodów. To się nie spodobało prezesowi Falubazu - Robertowi Dowhanowi, który natychmiast podążył do parku maszyn i zakazał zawodnikom swojego klubu, wyjeżdżania na tor. W 11 biegu na torze pojawiła się tylko dwójka gorzowian: Krzysztof Kasprzak i Michael Jepsen Jensen, którzy objechali 4 kółka zdobywając 5 punktów. Wielokrotny reprezentant Wielkiej Brytanii jako senior. Finalista Drużynowego Pucharu Świata w latach 2003-2006, w tym srebrny medalista w 2004 i brązowy z 2006. Uczestnik cyklu Grand Prix IMŚ w latach 2003-06, dwukrotnie stawał na podium turniejów -- w 2004 w Cardiff zajął trzecie, aw 2005 w Bydgoszczy drugie miejsce. W lidze polskiej startował nieprzerwanie od 1999 do 2012 roku. Z polskimi drużynami wywalczył trzy medale DMP -- złoty w 1999 i brązowy w 2002 oraz srebrny w 2006. 13 maja 2012, podczas meczu Betarda Sparty Wrocław z PGE Marmą Rzeszów w 3. biegu uległ ciężkiemu wypadkowi uderzając w bandę na prostej przeciwległej do startowej, w miejscu, gdzie kończy się banda "dmuchana". Po upadku stwierdzono krwotok wewnętrzny, został przewieziony do szpitala, gdzie okazało się, że ma problemy z oddychaniem. Zmarł w szpitalu podczas operacji
