About two weeks before the wrecking ball was about to completely demolish our old Hyundai Motor America headquarters building in Fountain Valley, California, we had a crazy thought: Wouldn't it be cool to do something outrageous inside the building before all the walls finally came down? Actually, it was Dustin Loranger, one of our Service Technicians, who had the idea...and we loved it. Why not put Rhys Millen, his Genesis Coupe drift car, and our abandoned HQ together for a unique drift demonstration in a unique industrial setting? Rhys was up for the challenge, and remarkably, so were our lawyers, so we put this thing together, with tongue (and donut) firmly planted in cheek. We think the video does a pretty good job showcasing Rhys' car control skills, the sweetness of the Genesis Coupe drift car, and the reason why Hollywood probably doesn't have to worry, just yet, about this cast and crew. ;) How'd we do?
Rhys Millen's 750 HP V6 is bred to break Pike's Peak
Rhys Millen will attempt to beat the current "Unlimited Class" World Record of 10:01.408 & the 10-minute barrier at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Last June, Rhys took a Hyundai Genesis coupe to a class record in the two-wheel drive Time Attack class with a 12:09.397. This year, Millen wants to take the overall record back from Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima, whose held the record since 2007, and bested Rod Millen's thirteen year old course record. Millen is aiming to get the first ever sub-10 minute time at Pikes Peak and he and his team have built a new car dubbed the Genesis PM580, a 1850 pound, 750 horse power V6 beast is designed specifically to conquer the 156 turns to the top and return the world record to the Millen name. Rhys Millen Gears up for the 2011 Pikes Peak Hill Climb
Rhys Millen returns to the 89th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to complete the job he set out last year: shattering the record in the "Unlimited" class. Although the current record still stands at 10:01.408, Rhys hopes that modifications and upgrades to the Red Bull-sponsored Hyundai Genesis RMR PM580, along with new tarmac portions of the course, will allow him to to claim victory at this year's race and finally break the 10-minute barrier. While Rhys Millen attempts to break the overall course record, his father will compete in the Time Attack 2WD class in an updated version of the Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe that Rhys set a class record in two years ago. With five overall race wins and eight class wins under his belt, Rod Millen is considered Pikes Peak royalty by many. The RMR-designed Art of Speed Genesis Coupe called for a vehicle with the visual impact to win awards at the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show while boasting sufficient performance to put the driver in the winners circle the following weekend. Backed by Rhys Millens reputation both on the track and in the aftermarket, Hyundai delivered its first prototype Genesis Coupe 2.0T to the RMR shop on August 8, allowing just 12 weeks of build time before the doors opened at SEMA in Las Vegas on November 4. A crew of six RMR employees promptly stripped the car to bare metal. At the same time, the crew began custom-fabricating new aftermarket parts and accessories for the Genesis Coupe which are certain to be among the first available in the aftermarket once Hyundais newest addition takes to the streets next year.
