Steve Reich - Proverb
Proverb is a musical composition by Steve Reich for three sopranos, two tenors, two vibraphones, and two electric organs. It is set to a text by Ludwig Wittgenstein.[1] It was written in 1995 and was originally intended for The Proms and the Utrecht Early Music Festival. It was premiered at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on February 10, 1996 by Theatre of Voices with Paul Hillier, to whom the piece is dedicated.[2] Proverb was written during a period when Reich was experimenting with "speech melody", and is influenced by the period Reich spent working on The Cave with Paul Hillier and singers with a strong background in medieval polyphony. This is especially apparent in the two tenor parts, which pay homage to Pérotin and organum in their use of rhythmic modes and pedal points. The text is: "How small a thought it takes to fill a whole life!" This text is an excellent explanation of the piece itself, as well as perhaps Reich's career, much of it spent exploring minimalism. So Percussion performs Reich's "Mallet Quartet"
Mallet Quartet (2009) is scored for two vibraphones and two five octave marimbas. I had never written for five octave marimbas extending down to cello C. On the one hand I was delighted to have the possibility of a low bass and on the other hand apprehensive since just slightly too hard a mallet that low can produce noise instead of pitch. Eventually, after a bit of experimentation, this was well worked out. The piece is in three movements, fast, slow, fast. In the two outer fast movements the marimbas set the harmonic background which remains rather static compared to recent pieces of mine like Double Sextet (2007). The marimbas interlock in canon, also a procedure I have used in many other works. The vibes present the melodic material first solo and then in canon. However, in the central slow movement the texture changes into a thinner more transparent one with very spare use of notes, particularly in the marimbas. I was originally concerned this movement might just be 'too thin', but I think it ends up being the most striking, and certainly the least expected, of the piece. Mallet Quartet is about 15 minutes in duration. It was co-commissioned by the Amadinda Quartet in Budapest (on the occasion of its 25th Anniversary), by Nexus in Toronto, So Percussion in New York and Synergy Percussion in Australia. Minor but clever little farce made by Québec's famous humor quintet "Rock et belles oreilles", whose name is a homophonic derivation of Hanna & Barbera's 60s cartoon character "Huckleberry Hound" (in French version, "Roquet belles oreilles"). Sketch is titled "Le quatrième Reich" ("The Fourth Reich") and is another response to Mordecai-Richler-induced Québec bashing. Well done, if a bit obvious. Interesting but sad note: RBO member playing the part of Commander Cadorette, ultra-talented Guy Lepage, has since then withdrawn to the CBC, where he hosts a crummy talk show. He's a pathetic sight in "Falardeau's Best Interview", elsewhere on this same channel. You may turn English captions on by means of CC button, at lower right corner of screen.
