Reconstruction Documentary: The Aftermath of The Civil War (HD)

Part I of the American Studies Reconstruction Documentary Project. NOTE: This documentary only discusses the aftermath of the civil war in the time period leading up to Reconstruction. It DOES NOT discuss the actual process of Reconstruction. I'm sorry if the title seems a bit misleading but I had to name it that way because this was a project for my American Studies class. We were assigned different aspects/time periods of Reconstruction and my group was required to discuss the aftermath of the Civil War, before Reconstruction. Directed by Ben Herbsman, edited by Ethan Boroson and Victor Patton, narrated by Mark Foote, and featuring CA Reconstruction Expert Jevon Bozzi. 24. Retreat from Reconstruction: The Grant Era and Paths to "Southern Redemption"

The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119) This lecture opens with a discussion of the myriad moments at which historians have declared an "end" to Reconstruction, before shifting to the myth and reality of "Carpetbag rule" in the Reconstruction South. Popularized by Lost Cause apologists and biased historians, this myth suggests that the southern governments of the Reconstruction era were dominated by unscrupulous and criminal Yankees who relied on the ignorant black vote to rob and despoil the innocent South. The reality, of course, diverges widely from this image. Among other accomplishments, the Radical state governments that came into existence after 1868 made important gains in African-American rights and public education. Professor Blight closes the lecture with the passage of the 15th Amendment, the waning radicalism of the Republican party after 1870, and the rise of white political terrorism across the South. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction: Peace Among Whites? End of Reconstruction? 05:05 - Chapter 2. Freedmen's Desires for Socioeconomic and Political Mobility 17:23 - Chapter 3. The Myth of the "Carpetbag Rule" 29:53 - Chapter 4. The Lasting Influences of the Carpetbaggers 38:51 - Chapter 5. Peter Bellion is a veteran investigator of the Victoria Police MCIU (Major Collision Investigation Unit) assessing many hundreds of fatal crashes. He has advised on a number of TAC campaigns. On this occasion he fronts the camera to reinforce the Wipe off 5 message with a graphic demonstration of how a car driving just 5 km/h faster can impact on the severity of injuries sustained by a vulnerable road user such as a pedestrian.. This was one of the most complex commercials ever made in Australia. One 20 frame sequence took visual effects teams in two cities 10 days to complete.Launched: 2006. Reconstruction from brain activity

** PLEASE READ THE CAPTION TO UNDERSTAND THIS VIDEO ** The left clip is a segment of a Hollywood movie trailer that the subject viewed while in the magnet. The right clip shows the reconstruction of this segment from brain activity measured using fMRI. The procedure is as follows: [1] Record brain activity while the subject watches several hours of movie trailers. [2] Build dictionaries (ie, regression models) that translate between the shapes, edges and motion in the movies and measured brain activity. A separate dictionary is constructed for each of several thousand points at which brain activity was measured. (For experts: The real advance of this study was the construction of a movie-to-brain activity encoding model that accurately predicts brain activity evoked by arbitrary novel movies.) [3] Record brain activity to a new set of movie trailers that will be used to test the quality of the dictionaries and reconstructions. [4] Build a random library of ~18000000 seconds (5000 hours) of video downloaded at random from YouTube. (Note these videos have no overlap with the movies that subjects saw in the magnet). Put each of these clips through the dictionaries to generate predictions of brain activity. Select the 100 clips whose predicted activity is most similar to the observed brain activity. Average these clips together. This is the reconstruction. For a related video see: www.youtube.com For the paper (Nishimoto et al., 2011, Current Biology) go to:dx.doi.org For ...

23. Black Reconstruction in the South: The Freedpeople and the Economics of Land and Labor

The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119) Professor Blight begins this lecture in Washington, where the passage of the first Reconstruction Act by Congressional Republicans radically altered the direction of Reconstruction. The Act invalidated the reconstituted Southern legislatures, establishing five military districts in the South and insisting upon black suffrage as a condition to readmission. The eventful year 1868 saw the impeachment of one president (Andrew Johnson) and the election of another (Ulysses S. Grant). Meanwhile, southern African Americans struggle to reap the promises of freedom in the face of economic disempowerment and a committed campaign of white supremacist violence. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction 04:20 - Chapter 2. Implications of the Four Reconstruction Acts 10:49 - Chapter 3. The Impeachment Process for Andrew Johnson 27:50 - Chapter 4. The Election of Grant in 1868 and the Advent of the Ku Klux Klan 47:40 - Chapter 5. The Second Reconstruction's Impact on Freed Slaves and Conclusion Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2008.

20. Wartime Reconstruction: Imagining the Aftermath and a Second American Republic

The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119) This lecture begins with a central, if often overlooked, turning point in the Civil War--the re-election of Abraham Lincoln in 1864. Although the concerted efforts of northern Peace Democrats and a palpable war weariness among the electorate made Lincoln's victory uncertain, timely Union victories in Atlanta and Mobile in September of 1864 secured Lincoln's re-election in November. This lecture concludes Professor Blight's section on the war, following Lee and Grant to Appomattox Courthouse, and describing the surrender of Confederate forces. The nature of Reconstruction and the future of the South, however, remained open questions in April of 1865. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction: Perceiving the Scale of Death through Whitman 06:26 - Chapter 2. Lincoln's Re-election in 1864 15:57 - Chapter 3. The South Surrenders: Grant and Lee at Appomattox 31:41 - Chapter 4. The Aftermath: Changes in the Constitution and Ideas of Reconstruction 46:39 - Chapter 5. Conclusion Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2008.

Vision Reconstruction

Using Hollywood movie trailers, UC Berkeley researchers have succeeded in decoding and reconstructing people's dynamic visual experiences. The brain activity recorded while subjects viewed a set of film clips was used to create a computer program that learned to associate visual patterns in the movie with the corresponding brain activity. The brain activity evoked by a second set of clips was used to test the movie reconstruction algorithm. This was done by feeding 18 million seconds of random YouTube videos into the computer program so that it could predict the brain activity that each film clip would most likely evoke in each subject. Using the new computer model, researchers were able to decode brain signals generated by the films and then reconstruct those moving images. Eventually, practical applications of the technology could include a better understanding of what goes on in the minds of people who cannot communicate verbally, such as stroke victims, coma patients and people with neurodegenerative diseases. It may also lay the groundwork for brain-machine devices that would allow people with cerebral palsy or paralysis, for example, to guide computers with their minds. The lead author of the study, published in Current Biology on September 22, 2011, is Shinji Nishimoto, a post-doctoral researcher in the laboratory of Professor Jack Gallant, neursoscientist and coauthor of the study. Other coauthors include Thomas Naselaris with UC Berkeley's Helen Wills ...

Visualizing Early Washington: A Digital Reconstruction of the Capital ca. 1814

The task of visualizing early Washington DC has proven to be more challenging than anticipated. Technology is not the problem; the problem is lack of reliable historical evidence. The IRC has worked with architectural historians, cartographers, engineers, and ecologists to assess the often-unreliable eyewitness accounts and to recreate a "best guess" glimpse of the early city. The project and research are ongoing.
