Rattansi: Foreign-fuelled revolt & media games spill Syria blood

Syria has called an emergency meeting of the Arab League, in an attempt to reverse the decision which saw it suspended from the organisation. The freeze on the country's membership and accompanying sanctions received wide support from the EU and the US An overwhelming majority of member states voted for the measure to urge president Bashar al-Assad to stop 8-months of violence. But it also triggered new protests and attacks on the Turkish, French and Saudi Arabian embassies in Damascus. Dozens more people were reportedly killed across the country on Sunday in the latest wave of crackdowns on anti-government protests. Author and journalist Afshin Rattansi thinks the conflict in Syria's being fueled from abroad, and could drag on for some time. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Afshin Rattansi : Europe in Recession

* Japan in deeper recession than previously thought * Tokyo considers $216 bln stimulus -- newspaper * Canada declares recession, cuts benchmark rates * Progress made on US auto rescue plan * Dow , S&P 500 fall in early trade By Kevin Liffey and Daniel Trotta LONDON/NEW YORK, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Japan sank further into recession in the third quarter, new European economic indicators showed that the downturn there is deepening and Canada declared itself in recession on Tuesday. In the United States, negative retails sales data and tepid home-sales figures failed to animate Wall Street, which traded down after a two-day rally had contributed to sentiment that the stock market could have hit a cyclical bottom. "There's hesitation that indeed the worst is over," said Andre Bakhos, president of Princeton Financial Group in Princeton, New Jersey. "Only time will tell. Caution is still warranted."

Afshin Rattansi - Showreel Spring 2008

Afshin Rattansi has for more than a decade and a half worked in flagship broadcast and print media around the world. In the UK, he has worked at The Guardian, the New Statesman, for every regional and national outlet of the BBC and a host of award-winning Channel 4 production companies. In 1999, he helped to launch the developing world's first global financial news and current affairs channel (see articles). He has reported on events across Africa and Latin America as well as the Middle East and Europe for fifteen years, covering the fall of the Berlin Wall, the resignation of Margaret Thatcher and working on the first UK primetime documentary to analyse human rights abuses by the then US and British-backed regime of Saddam Hussein. Before working for the BBC's Business and Economics Units, he analysed geopolitical financial and environmental risk for Lloyd's of London after world markets crashed. Portfolio allocation was of the order of £1 bn. Returning from the Middle East in 2002, he went on to produce for the BBC's top-rated radio show, the Today programme, on Radio 4. The programme was at the centre of the furore over claims that the Iraqi government possessed weapons of mass destruction. He left the programme amidst the events that led to the widely ridiculed Hutton Inquiry into the death of government scientist and Today programme source, David Kelly. He was one of the first english-language employees of Al Jazeera and worked at the Arab satellite station's ...

Afshin Rattansi and Gore Vidal on Iran & Power June 2008

Gore Vidal speaks to Afshin Rattansi about another of President Bush's attorney-generals facing a subpoena, the White House becoming Persepolis and military action against Iran. Afshin Rattansi: We hear that Michael Mukasey is going to become the latest of the President's Attorney-Generals to be subpoenaed, this time over his conversations with Bush and Cheney -- does this show that Congress is serious about calling the executive to account? Gore Vidal: No, Congress has never been more cowardly, nor more corrupt. All Bush has do is to make sure certain amounts of money go in the direction of certain important congressmen and that's end of any serious investigation. After all, one of the bravest members of Congress is Denis Kucinich who brought the article of impeachment in to the well of the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives must then try the president, and then after that it goes to the Senate for judgment. However, none of these things will happen because there's nobody there except for Mr. Kucinich who has the courage to take on a sitting president who is kind of a Mafioso. Afshin Rattansi: How can it just be one person among so many hundreds of Congressmen who wants the impeachment of George W. Bush in these circumstances? Gore Vidal: Well it's because we no longer have a country. We don't have a republic any more. During the last 7 or 8 years of the Bush regime, they've got rid of the Bill of Rights, they've got rid of habeas corpus. They have ...

Rattansi & Ridley #19 4of4

3of4 - #19 - Afshin Rattansi and Yvonne Ridley talk to: Tino Sehgal in New York talks about his latest work showing at the Guggenheim Museum of Art about the themes of progress and materialism. Tino Sehgal (born 1976) is a British-German artist based in Berlin. His works, which he calls "constructed situations",[1] involve one or more people carrying out instructions conceived by the artist. His father, a member of the Sehgal family, "had to flee from what is today Pakistan when he was a child, and he became a manager at IBM"[2]; his mother was "a German native and homemaker."[3] Sehgal was born in London but grew up mostly in Düsseldorf and Paris; he studied political economy and dance in Berlin and Essen and began to work as an artist in 2000. He has exhibited at a number of important venues including the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Tate gallery, Manifesta 4 and the 2005 Venice Biennale. In 2006 he was shortlisted for the Hugo Boss Prize.[4] In 2008 the Nicola Trussardi Foundation has presented Tino Sehgals first major exhibition in Italy in the setting of Villa Reale, one of the most spectacular historic buildings in Milan. On the sale of his work, the artist stipulates that there is no written set of instructions, no written receipt, no catalogue and no pictures.[1] This means that his work is not documented in any way. Afshin Rattansi, Alex Alonso: Poverty in 26 cities & Gangs

Afshin Rattansi taklks to Streetgangs.com's Alex Alonson about a new report warning of poverty across the US WASHINGTON (AFP) — Homelessness and hunger increased in an overwhelming majority of 25 US cities in the past year, driven by the foreclosure crisis and rising unemployment, a survey showed Friday. Out of 25 cities across the United States surveyed by the US Conference of Mayors, 83 percent said homelessness in general had increased over the past year while 16 cities, or nearly two-thirds of those polled, cited a rise in the number of families who had been forced out of their homes. In Louisville, Kentucky, the number of homeless families increased 58 percent in 2008 to 931 families from 591 people in 2007, with the rise blamed on soaring food, health care, transportation and energy prices. Boston, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island blamed the rise in family homelessness on evictions by landlords whose rental properties were foreclosed.

Here in Britain, for the first time in more than 3-centuries, a peculiarly important official in parliament, or self-styled mother of ALL parliaments, has been forced to resign over suspected corruption.
