Rainbow - Stargazer (long studio version)
Here's an early mix (from Cozy Powell's own collection) of Stargazer, off the Rainbow Rising album. It features an extended keyboard intro (cut from the final release) and a longer outro. This is taken from the album "Rising Rough Mix" (and is the most interesting track on it). Rising was probably my favourite album back in 1977(76?) - I even transcribed the guitar parts in tablature. Then again, I was the first person in school with a copy - having discovered the joys of import record shops by this time. Local (Australian) release came 3-5 months later. And, towards the end of that year, the band toured, and we all went to see them - rainbow-light, 1812 Overture drum-solo, guitar through the ceiling and all. For more info - www.eagle-rock.com Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore in 1975 after he left Deep Purple at the height of their fame. They were instantly successful and released a string of hit albums, with an ever changing line-up, between 1975 and 1983 when Blackmore broke up the group to join the reformed Deep Purple. This concert from their European tour in 1977 features the line-up responsible for the "Long Live Rock'n'Roll" album released later that year, including vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell. Blackmore had to be smuggled out of Austria after a trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier and was very late arriving in Munich, all of which seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig. This performance is from the Eagle Vision DVD "Live in Munich 1977", available now.

But you know how we are ... we couldn't "just" do this tune by itself...so in the studio we found a made-in-heaven matchup in the timeless melody from the Shaker Hymn "Simple Gifts" written in the 1800's (also used by Aaron Copland in his Ballet "Appalachian Spring"). We feel it's an especially appropriate mash-up because of our profound love and respect for the Hawaiian culture -- a people who are so good at finding happiness in simplicity.
