Indian Railways sight and sound spectacular

This video is a compilation of short pieces taken (with permission ) from the channels of four Indian Railway videographers. I find the Indian Railways fascinating to watch and enjoy the videos coming out of the country. It was that which prompted me to put this piece together for others to enjoy and perhaps share the amazing scenes that one sees there. There's not too many places in the railway world that you can still hear the steady chug of an ALCO , a modern EMD or the whine of a big electric all in the same place. India has got the lot. The work is compiled in no particular order of merit or favourites but simply as it was taken down from Youtube. It has been "bordered" because it was a mix of standard definition at 480p and high definition at 720p. It was edited to fit together neatly and to retain as much quality as possible for rendering at HD 720p. Some small amounts of tweaking were done to enhance contrast and exposure but it is basically as shot. Considerable tweaking was done to provide stereo sound effects. The work comes from the following Youtube channels :- www.youtube.com www.youtube.com www.youtube.com www.youtube.com I thank the guys for letting me use their work to put this together.

China suspends new railway projects after crash

China has suspended all new railway construction projects, as controversy swirls over the nation's high-speed network nearly three weeks after a fatal crash sparked safety concerns. Rail authorities have also cut the speed of trains running on newly-built high-speed lines and will conduct safety checks on all existing fast links as well as those under construction. "We will suspend for the time being the examination and approval of new railway construction projects," the State Council, or cabinet, said in a statement late on Wednesday. The government will also "thoroughly" examine projects that have already been submitted for approval, it added. Developing the world's largest high-speed rail network has been a key political goal for Beijing, but the death of 40 people in a collision of two high-speed trains on July 23 provoked public outrage and forced it to rethink. Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports.

Bluebell Railway Appeal - updated Nov 2011

Bluebell Railway Northern Extension Project -- destination East Grinstead To secure the future of the Bluebell, the Northern Extension Project will see the Railway steaming back into East Grinstead over Imberhorne Viaduct, thus achieving the ambition of the pioneers who 50 years ago formed the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society. As of November 2011 we still need just under £1 million to complete this project, half of that by the end of the year. The new material was actually filmed in September, and since then another 25 trains have indeed run. Another 15 trains are planned for later this year, and then a few more next year. You can find out more information and donate to the appeal via the 50th Anniversary Appeal website: bluebellrailwaytrust.org.uk

LMS Princess Coronation Pacific No. 46233 Duchess of Sutherland has been officially outshopped in BR Brunswick green. Owning group the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust held a poll to choose which livery it should appear in when its latest 10 year overhaul was completed. BR green was a clear winner. As early-morning drizzle gave way to sunshine on Saturday, March 3, the completed locomotive was officially rolled out of its West Shed home at Swanwick Junction at the Midland-Railway Butterley as a crowd of admiring photographers gathered. The Drachenfels Railway, Königswinter, Germany - 29th January 2012

The Drachenfels ("Dragon's Rock") is a mountain 321 metres (1053 ft) in the Siebengebirge mountain range between Königswinter and Bad Honnef in Germany. The ruined castle atop the mountain, built between 1138 and 1167 by Archbishop Arnold I of Cologne bears the same name and was originally intended for the protection of Cologne to the south. Originally it consisted of a bergfried with court, chapel and living quarters for servants. The castle was slighted in 1634, during the Thirty Years' War, by the protestant Swedes and never rebuilt. As a strategic asset it had outlived its usefulness. Erosion due to the continued quarrying undermined much of the remains and only a small part is left today. The rock, like the rest of the Siebengebirge, is formed by the remnants of a volcano and has been the site of a trachyte quarry since Roman times, which, amongst others delivered the building material for the Cologne Cathedral. Of all the mountains in the Siebengebirge, it's closest to the river Rhine, which facilitates easy transport by barges, thus making it an excellent place for a quarry. This ended in 1836, when the Prussian government bought the quarry. In 1922 the first protection measures were put in place and in 1956 the site was declared a national park. A neogothic castle, lower on the mountain, is named Schloss Drachenburg and was built in 1882 by Baron Stephan von Sarter. Both the top and Schloss Drachenburg can be reached by the Drachenfelsbahn, a rack railway built in ...

Peterborough Model Railway Exhibition 2011 HD

This is my video log of the various Model Railway layouts that were at the Peterborough Model Railway Exhibition 2011 event this year. Thanks goes to all model railway clubs that granted me full permission to film their fantastic layouts. I think I have mainly filmed N gauge layouts as there wasn't many OO gauge model railways to film but I did manage to film a couple of O gauge trains as well which are impressive for detail and size. There is a couple of modern image layouts in N gauge that I found really impressive such as Shaweport, Dragonby and Newcastle-by-the-Water. Well here is the layouts shown in this order on the video. Uppingham: EM Gauge. This layout is quite a classic one as construction started some 35 years ago. It is based on a segment of the Rugby - Peterborough line and it is set in around the early 1900's which therefore makes it a steam era layout. Sadly though, nothing was running on the layout. So I only briefly filmed the scenery and then moved on. Shaweport: N Gauge This modern image layout is set in the mid-1990's right through to present day operations and it has a high density of rail traffic ranging from DMU's to HST's as well as various types of Freight to keep things interesting. This layout has not one but two N gauge Class 92's that are from CJM models. Other freight was hauled by Dapol Class 66's, Graham Farish Class 60's, Dapol Class 58 with Passenger trains with Class 90's, Class 87's and Class 86's with DMU's such as the Class 150 ...

Floating railroad bridges on the Algoma Central Railway. 9/22/1994

We are south bound out of Hearst Ontario on the Algoma Central. We have crossed the diamond with the CN at Oba, and now crossing the first of two floating bridges. This is a fantastic ride, with scenery that can't be beat. Between Oba and Franz, at Mile 212 and 210, you will cross over the floating bridges of Hoodoo and Squaw Bay, on gigantic Oba Lake. These bridges are supported by pilings driven deep into the bottomless northern muskeg. Due to their construction and location, the Railway must perform maintenance on these bridges in the winter, when the lake is frozen. Dinesh Trivedi demands bailout for Railways

Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi seeks a 10000 crore bailout for the cash strapped railways. Trivedi wants this corpus fund along lines of National Rural Health Mission. But unlike the bailout demanded by Air India, Trivedi wants to get the government on board in rebuilding railway coffers. euronews futuris - Tracking the health of Europe's railways

www.euronews.com Safety on Europe's railways is under the spotlight. Just over 3000 accidents were reported in 2009, with 174 of those were caused by rolling stock in motion. At the same time transport by rail continues to grow. By 2050 freight on Europe's railways is expected to have increased by 80 percent and the number of passengers by over 50 percent. With that comes an increase in the associated risks. With the aim of improving safety standards, a European research project in Leuven, Belgium, is monitoring trains through an analysis of sound and vibration as they travel. "We install two or three sensors on the rail", explained Tom Vanhonacker, the Rail System Manager at APT. "We measure and identify each train and every single wheel on the train that passes on our network, so we know if there is a defect." The system, based on High Frequency Vibration Monitoring technology, is cheap and takes up very little space. The researchers also say it is highly accurate. Sensors capture the vibrations each time a train passes by. Then a device reads the data which is transmitted it to a central server. By analysing the waves generated by each single wheel of the train, researchers are able to detect mis-shapen or broken wheels. Frederik Vermeulen from APT detailed how it works: "Day by day we collect all the vibration data. What you will see is that when every train passes you have a peak. We measure the peak acceleration, and if the peak is not normal, we know something ...

Barrington quarry railway, Cambridgeshire, UK 2003 - Part 1

Barrington was one of the largest quarries in Britain. It was developed in the Lower (Grey) Chalk escarpment. In 2005 the remains of an Ichthyosaur were recovered from deep in the pit, a rare find in the Chalk. They are at the Natural History Museum. The site is a designated SSSI for the 'Cambridge Greensand' which lies at the base of the Chalk. The phosphatic pebbles are fossiliferous and have produced vertebrate remains. Barrington quarry was the last standard gauge quarry railway in the UK. Thanks to the interest of the quarry manager, John Drayton, and the volunteers of the Rutland Railway Museum, enthusiasts were able to experience steam working in a unique setting, courtesy of the Industrial Railway Society and Rugby Cement/RMC/Cemex. This 2003 video shows steam and diesel operations at the quarry. It also features detailed coverage of the 40 year old Ruston-Bucyrus 110-RB shovel and dragline. A second video will show winter operations in 2005 just before the quarry line was replaced with road vehicles. After producing cement at Barrington cement works in Cambridgeshire for nearly 80 years CEMEX stopped clinker manufacturing at the plant in 2008. The decision to turn off the cement kiln at the plant was taken as part of a programme to rationalise the company's cement manufacturing in the UK by transferring a significant proportion of Barrington's production capacity to CEMEX's other UK plants at Rugby (Warwickshire) and South Ferriby (North Lincolnshire), where the ...

As the train is stretched into the reverse curve, the strain of the pull makes the units loose traction as they slip several times while trying to climb the second level of the grade. The top level can be seen high atop the hill above the units at this point. This section of the railroad goes through a series of reverse loops to get the railroad to the top of Soldier Summit on the ex-Rio Grande railroad. Before the re-alignment. Trains in Timelapes - Mt Lofty Railway Station - Australian Trains

Saturday morning movements through Mt Lofty Railway Station on the 28th April 2012. Mount Lofty railway station is a railway station in South Australia, on the former Adelaide-Bridgewater railway line, located in the Adelaide Hills suburb of Stirling. The station opened in 1883 and it is located 31.0 km (19m41c) by rail from the Adelaide Railway Station. It is the highest railway station between Adelaide and Melbourne. Two platforms were provided. The north or 'Down' platform is 125.0 metres long and the south or 'Up' platform is 103.6 metres long. Both platforms are still in place, although no longer in use. The wooden steps leading down to the station building is still in place, but has been fenced off and is very fragile. The station signs on both platforms, which were mainly used at stations in the hills and near the beach (eg Belair and Semaphore respectively) from early in the 1900s to the 1980s, are also still in place. Until 1987, Adelaide suburban trains serviced the station and went further east to Bridgewater. The trains were withdrawn in that year because of high cost of operating the trains and low passenger numbers. All railway stations beyond Belair, including Mount Lofty railway station were closed to suburban trains, and most of the other stations have since been demolished . In 1995 the main railway line from Adelaide to Melbourne was converted from Broad Gauge (1600mm) to Standard Gauge (1435mm), thus preventing any restoration of local trains to Mount ...

Swiss Railways

Views of the Standard and Metre gauge railways of Switzerland. Firstly, some frieght trains near Gotthard, famous for its pass, and very, very long tunnel. Secondly, a look at the lake and the Paddle Steamer 'Lotschberg', as well as some metre gauge traffic, at Brienz. Brienz, as many will know, is the bottom terminus of the Brienz and Rothorn Steam Rack Railway. A possible thing to come? Thirdly, some more metre gauge traffic at Realp, at the foot of the Furka pass. The station only serves a population of around 160, but is used for car transport trains, to carry travellers along the rail route, rather than negotiating the Furka pass itself, like we did. (In low thick cloud may I add!)

A Quaint Little Railway (1930)

This short, silent film captures one of Britain's minor little railways: the Leek and Manifold Light Railway on the Staffordshire Moorlands. The railway opened in 1907, linking the villages of Waterhouses and Hulme End, and was built mainly for agricultural traffic, with a passenger service being a secondary consideration. Its route went through beautiful countryside in Staffordshire, and it is unfortunate that the intertitles state it as being shot in Derbyshire! In 1934 the entire line was closed by the North Staffordshire Railway. There is little in the way of recorded film material of this quaint little train, so this gem gives an invaluable insight into the railway. (Stuart Smith, Midlands Railway Centre)You can watch this and over 1000 other complete films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive free of charge in the Mediatheque at BFI Southbank, London and at the new QUAD centre for art and film in Derby - www.bfi.org.uk www.derbyquad.co.uk

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

From the Himalayas in the north to the Nilgiris in the south - for a hundred years these little trains have climbed through the clouds and into the wonderful world of Indian hill railways. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a line so close to the people that it flows like a river through their lives. The relationship between the train and the people is changing, however, as a new generation of Gurkhas populates these hills, demanding an independent state and fighting for a new identity as they journey into the modern Indian world.

Indian Railways Future 2030-Original Background Sounds

The railway ministers should focus on developing a vision for 2030 and start executing it NOW ! Its getting late. All the trains are over crowed, there is shortage of tracks and frieghts are suffering as well. We haven't grown the tracks much post independence. Aviation is always be expensive and people cant afford to spend 24 hrs on train journeys. What is required urgently is fast trains and dedicated corridors and even Melgev like trains for twin cities. The crucial files keep lying unattended at ministers' office for months- there is no vision, no strategy- and the need for more tracks, freight capacity and fast trains is now becoming CRITICAL!. Somebody please wake up these guys, the wait for tickets is getting unbearable and economy is suffering as well for want of better railway infrastructure.

Garage Model Railway November Update No.15

Another walk-round video showing the changes to the layout over the last 10 months. The most significant change is the continuos run on the new upper level with 2 new long sidings which can both hold a nine coach train and engine. I have also made a dedicated siding for the new TMD which can hold all the spare locomotives. Any other changes have been purely cosmetic. The upper level has added a new dimension to the operating procedures (in other words more complications) I now have 4 main line continuos running which is simply great fun to just sit back and watch trains go by!

Nene Valley Railway Olympic Torch Rehearsal (20/04/12)

The 20th April 2012 saw 73050 'City Of Peterborough' carrying the 'rehearsal' Olympic Torch between Wansford and Peterborough on the Nene Valley Railway. This was the second steam train of the day for the relay team, having been to the Great Central Railway in the morning. This video shows the Olympic cavalcade with a heavy police escort arriving at Wansford where the 'torch bearers' alight from their bus and enter the station, shortly after 73050 departs for Peterborough.
