This is clipped from the early 1960s film, Everyday Radioactivity, produced by Mr. Wizard, Don Herbert, showman-science teacher famous for his Watch Mr. Wizard programs, which ran on NBC from 1951 to 1965. ) . A wonderful resource for a look at the history of radiation is the Health Physics Museum at www.orau.org . The museum is operated by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, offers a wide range of technical and regulatory information. The museum has a very large inventory of instruments and radiation related items, including descriptions and photographs, that date back to the Manhattan Project. However, it also offers an extensive Health Physics Resources page with information and links to answer the full range of radiation related questions. Another good source of information on radiation is the website (and downloadable book) Radiation, People and the Environment (www.iaea.org ) provides a comprehensive look at ionizing radiation. Produced by the IAEA in close co-operation with the UK National Radiological Protection Board, this provides a broad overview on the subject of ionizing radiation, its effects and uses, as well as the measures in place to ensure it can be used safely. Highest Radiation in LA Air Yet
HOTTEST LOS ANGELES AIR YET! Our last HEPA filter measurements January 22 produced some astonishing results. Doing a spot test on the Honeywell barrel-style filter and a Kenmore Plasmawave, we found radiation ~351% of normal background. The machines had been running for 42 days. The combined aggregate dust came in even hotter at 538% of normal background radiation at Radiation Station Santa Monica. Now 43 days later, we tested the same HEPA filters in the same environment and setup. This time, as you can see in the video, the dust was a lot hotter. A spot test was ~377% of the previous background. Then we vacuumed out the filters with a HEPA filter Eureka vacuum cleaner and tested the aggregate. The March 6 test of the combined dust came in at a sizzling 668% of background or 6.68 times normal. Since the last testing period, the radiation detected has risen another 130% indicating a continued upward trend. That radiation is rising in Los Angeles comes as no surprise considering the enormous amount of radioactive 'buckeyball' filled with 60 uranium uranyls apiece that has been being produced at the stricken complex for almost a year. A just-released UC Davis report describing the phenomena is also examined in Beta Watch. We now posits that this radiation ahead of the main swell through repeated aeration resultant of choppy Pacific water in storms, is picked up and moved on the winds as sea spray and mist moving ahead of the current. It commonly refers to the radioactive dust created when a nuclear weapon explodes. This radioactive dust, consisting of hot particles, is a kind of radioactive contamination. It can lead to the contamination of ground and the animal food chain. A wide range of biological changes may follow the irradiation of animals. These vary from rapid death following high doses of penetrating whole-body radiation, to essentially normal lives for a variable period of time until the development of delayed radiation effects, in a portion of the exposed population, following low dose exposures. The unit of actual exposure is the Röntgen, defined in ionisations per unit volume of air. All ionisation based instruments (including geiger counters and ionisation chambers) measure exposure. However, effects depend on the energy per unit mass, not the exposure measured in air. A deposit of 1 joule per kilogram has the unit of 1 gray (Gy). For 1 MeV energy gamma rays, an exposure of 1 röntgen in air produces a dose of about 0.01 gray (1 centigray, cGy) in water or surface tissue. Because of shielding by the tissue surrounding the bones, the bone marrow only receives about 0.67 cGy when the air exposure is 1 röntgen and the surface skin dose is 1 cGy. 2/7/2012 -- Radiation Test DIRECTLY at Byron Illinois Nuclear Power Plant
Many thanks to international medcom for the 2nd Inspector Alert geiger counter. Here is a link to their site (they are the manufacturer of the Inspector Alert geiger ) medcom.com READ BELOW: Today, we drove into the mouth of the beast -- Location : 1/4 mile south of the Byron Illinois Nuclear power plant. We passed within a few hundred feet of the structures. Got some GREAT shots of the steam venting near the reactor buildings. This nuclear plant 'vented' clouds of steam laced with tritium this past week -- the clouds were blown by prevailing winds over downtown Chicago, IL. Thus the reason for this measurement taking trip. Todays levels near the plant directly are below the alert level of 100CPM -- but a full 20CPM above downtown Chicago (those tests will be uploaded later tonight). Todays measurements averaged between 45cpm and 48cpm. Several more to still be processed and uploaded.. most averaging in the 50CPM range.. These 'mid level' readings -- half way to the alert level of 100CPM--- leads me to believe that the tritium is dissipating as expected -- however some elevated amounts still remain.

In the last 60 years it is thought tens of thousands of people have been forced from their homes after radioactive waste was dumped into a river in Siberia. The government recently announced the resettlement programme was over. However, four villages remain in the deadly radiation zone. Residents return to Japan radiation zone
More than a year ago, an earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused one of the worst nuclear disasters in history. Now the Japanese government says radiation levels are sufficiently low in the danger zone near the Fukushima nuclear facility, and people have begun returning home. But in the city on Minami Soma, 18km from Fukushima, there is still no electricity or running water, and high levels of radiation have seeped into the fields surrounding the town. LA Rain Radiation Over Five Times Normal
An imperfect storm swept into Southern California on, perhaps appropriately enough, April Fools weekend creating the conditions that tested EnviroReporter.com's scientific hypothesis that radioactive "buckyballs" and other fission radionuclides from the triple Fukushima Japan meltdowns are already impacting the region. Sure enough, a rain composed primarily of sea mist formed over a choppy ocean with high winds tested higher than any other Los Angeles Basin rain since Radiation Station Santa Monica began fallout radiation tests March 15, 2011, four days after the unabated meltdowns began. The rain, not impacted by so-called "natural" radon progeny, came in at a whopping 506% above normal, more than high enough to qualify as a hazardous material situation for the California Highway Patrol. This is the hottest LA rain detected with our Inspector Alert nuclear radiation monitor in the over 1500 radiation tests we've taken since last year's Ides of March.

Radiation check in Japan June7/11
Another beautiful day in Japan, I am 135 miles / 220 Km south of Fukushima, on the outskirts of the Tokyo area. It is Tuesday, June 7th, as you can see in the video, I just walk outside of my house and .... radiation. The air is not dangerous but the ground is. The radiation is much higher in low lying areas and the government here is desperately trying to keep it quiet.

Cell Tower Microwave Radiation Presentation by Magda Havas
In March 2012, Professor Magda Havas of Trent University gave a one hour presentation to the citizens of Oakville Ontario Canada that demonstrated the amount of microwave emissions that are emitted by cell phone antenna. The audience in attendance were mostly members of the local community of Bronte that were concerned about 6 additional cell phone antenna that were placed on a tower beside their local fire station. In this video you will be introduced to several cell antenna studies that show the microwave radiation that is emitted by these towers are harmful to human health. Update 9/7/11: Update 9/7/11: On August 20th, the POTRBLOG team reported that the 178X background radioactive rain fall "may be indicative of a RECENT SIGNIFICANT radiological event in Fukushima." That assessment now appears to be now born out by a Japanese report of large Iodine-131 detections in radioactive sewage collected in Oshu City 180+ KM north of Fukushima on August 25th. The collection date of the sewage sample correlates to several earthquakes during the period and reports of radioactive steam rising up from cracks in the ground at the Fukushima nuclear site. It also correlates strongly with large increases in radioactive detection along the jetstream in North America. Taken together, the data is indicative of Coruim entering the ground water, becoming re-critical, and inducing the release/production of large amounts of Radon 222. 2/9/2012 - 30th floor OUTSIDE Radiation Test - Downtown Chicago @ Michigan & 13th Ave.
Many thanks to international medcom for the 2nd Inspector Alert geiger counter. Here is a link to their site (they are the manufacturer of the Inspector Alert geiger ) medcom.com I have now taken several radiation tests in (and around) the Chicago area and Byron Illinois Nuclear power plant. These videos will all be assembled into one post on my website once I am done uploading the bulk of the videos. This is an outside test --- on a 30th floor balcony facing eastward .. nearest cross streets were Michigan & 13th --- results = 33.4CPM (or 334 over the course of 10 minutes). Alert level is approx. 100CPM (or 1000 over the course of 10 minutes). Simply put.. the "background" detected radiation is 33.4CPM -- and 100CPM is the alert level by all common standards --- therefore the radiation levels in Chicago on 2/8/2012 were fairly low in comparison to earlier readings in the 50CPM range. If you're from the Chicago area .. or live near the Byron Nuclear power plant --- these readings are for you -- they show low to mid range levels of "background radiation" -- free floating particles picked up by the two geiger counter plates (inspector alert models) and in the geiger tube of the yellow CDV-700 conter. The March 11th 2011 earthquake and tsunami sent three reactors of the region's main nuclear plant into meltdown. In the town of Iwaki, which is heavily dependent on the fishing trade, the subsequent radiation leaks were a huge blow. "Our spirits are down and we want fishing operations to resume as soon as possible," said local fisherman Kinzaburo Shiga. "Consumer worries about seafood safety is more of a concern than radiation scares. We help out with the monitoring in the hope that one day consumers will return to eat our delicious local fish." Officials have tested close to 3000 fish samples over the past year. They're due to announce the results of a contamination test from new born fish on Wednesday. Radiation fears continue to affect those living in Fukushima city too, which is just 50 kilometres from the nuclear plant. While readings have fallen considerably, for many local children, the outdoors is still a no-go area. Instead, Japan's Red Cross has set up a temporary indoor playground in one neighbourhood. "There are lots of people worried about radiation, especially parents who don't want to let their children play outside," said volunteer Takeru Fukawa. This radiation test was done at about noon CST 2/8/2012 -- location : Grant Park / Jackson St. and Columbus / Downtown Chicago -- 41°52'37.37"N , 87°37'17.59"W The results have come back @ several locations (ground level) from Byron Nuclear power plant all the way south east to the city of Chicago --- all in the 40-50CPM range. (alert level is 100CPM) This test is no exception to the others -- 47CPM is the high count. Roughly HALF the alert level just in background radiation. 4-19-2012 Yokosuka City officials check radiation around my house full video
After finding .07 microseiverts on the public street in front of my house and after fighting with city officials who repeatedly told me to clean up the dirt and bury it on my property, the city officials finally came to my home to check the levels of radiation one week after I reported the find. They found the dirt to be .52 microsieverts which is under the city limit of .59 micro sieverts. I also got readings in the 0.5- 0.6 range after the dirt in my front yard was mixed by the man next door. See the end of my video entitled "radiation around my house". Nevertheless levels of at least 0.7 are contained in that dirt and it appears lower once it is mixed. This is very disconcerting because the officials plan to recycle this dirt instead of disposing of it properly. If you speak Japanese you can see what they have to say about how they dispose of the dirt in my video 4-20-12 Yokosuka city cleans up radiation around my house" youtu.be . It turns out Yokosuka has no plan or system in place for taking care of hazardous waste. They told us they will think about it and until then we recommended labeling the bags of dirt, testing for how many bequerels are in the dirt and keeping them somewhere until they figure out what to do with it. Other moms and I will be following up on what happens to the dirt.
