ustad fateh ali khan raag jonpori on atv post by zagham
ustad fateh ali khan live on atv morning show . Bade Fateh Ali Khan (born: 1935) is amongst the foremost Khayal vocalists alive today in Pakistan, and the last significant exponent of the Patiala Gharana (stylistic lineage). He is the younger of the singing duo "Amanat Ali-Fateh Ali", who enjoyed immense prestige and success in Pakistan as well as India, until the demise of Amanat Ali Khan (1932-1974). Amanat Ali-Fateh Ali became celebrities while still in their childhood in undivided India, and achieved their highest official recognition in 1969, when the President of Pakistan conferred on them the Pride of Performance Medal. The "Bade" (elder) prefix got attached to Fateh Ali's name after younger Pakistani musicians with similar names started making waves with an entirely different genre of music. Fateh Ali and his late brother were trained by their father, Akhtar Hussain, a distinguished vocalist in the patronage of the princely state of Patiala in colonial, undivided India. Their grandfather, Ali Baksh, also served the same court, and was a cofounder of the Patiala gharana. The prodigious talent of Amanat Ali- Fateh Ali received early encouragement at the Patiala court. They had a glorious debut in 1945 at Lahore, sponsored by the influential connoisseur, Pandit Jeevanlal Mattoo Their breakthrough came at the All-Bengal Music Conference in Calcutta in 1949, when Amanat Ali was 17, and Fateh Ali was 14, after which they never looked back. Life changed dramatically for ...

Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi - Raag Multani (1992)
As a follow-up to the previously uploaded 'Pt. Bhimsen Joshi - Raag Multani' video I uploaded, here is an excerpt of the same bandish (composition) sung nearly thirty-five years later; from Jalandhar, Punjab to Stuttgart, Germany. This is only an excerpt of the forty-minute-long-plus Khayal sung by Pandit Bhimsen-ji in the 'Vocal Phenomenal Vol.2 CD by Chhanda Dhara, where he has also sung Raags Jaunpuri and Bhairavi. All courtesy and rights go to Chhanda Dhara. I am solely uploading this out of respect and admiration for the performed items and, of course the great artist performing it. In this recording, it is interesting to notice the style shift in Pandit-ji's singing as well as the element of age taking play, with this recording being more mature with Bhimsen-ji's age (at 70 years old) versus the youthfulness of the previous recording (at 35 years old). Nevertheless, the greatness and scope that Pandit Bhimsen-ji has explored in both recordings is mind boggling. When the Bharat Ratna was conferred upon Bhimsen-ji in January 2009, the goal of marking and comprehending the excellency of his music became a closer reality. May all enjoy this recording as much as I have! : )

Kaushiki Chakrabarty - excerpt from raag Multani
Embedding the clip is of course ok, BUT otherwise no further use, no copying and no publication of this material is allowed without my permission. Since there's been quite some response and enthusiasm for the youtube-video's and the 'Gharana radio-special' (for info on the radio-special see my weblog www.tonalties.nl ) I produced this year on ragasinger Kaushiki Chakrabarty I think publishing a very nice excerpt of Kaushiki's great concert on 15th of April this year in Amsterdam will be appreciated by all admirers of her singing. It's a 10-minute excerpt of Kaushiki's rendition of raag Multani in Amsterdam. On tabla: Subhashish Bhattacharjee, on harmonium: Vyasmurti Anandteerth Katti. Notice the big difference (and improvement) in sound compared to the sound in the earlier published video-portrait and in the radio-portrait, where I used excerpts of the same Amsterdam-concert. In this youtube-video I think the overall sound is better than in both the video-portrait and in the radio-special. I combined and mixed the recording made in the concert hall (as represented in the video-portrait of Kaushiki) with the (reference-)recording of the Theatre of the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, a recording I used in the radio-portrait. The result of this new mix (out of the two 'problematic' earlier ones) is a sound that's hopefully more satisfying on all levels. But this is probably of no concern to most of you watching this video. Hope you'll enjoy it! Copyright of this video ...

Raag Bhupali - Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty
Bada Khayal in Raag Bhupali by Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty. Ajoy Chakrabarty was born in Bengal to Ajit Chakrabarty in a Hindu Brahmin family. They moved to India from his homeland, Bangladesh during the partition and raised his two sons in Shyamnagar. His younger brother, Sanjay Chakrabarty is a noted composer and music therapist. His daughter, Kaushiki Chakrabarty is also an upcoming talent of Hindusthani classical music. Chakrabarty was a disciple of Ustad Munawar Ali Khan. He is also a first class graduate from the Rabindra Bharati University. Chakrabarty showed extraordinary promise in vocal music and at the tender age of three, began taking lessons from his father Ajit Chakrabarty. He then learnt from Pannalal Samanta and Kanai Das Bairagi and later became a student of Padma Bhushan Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh. In 1969, his training took a decisive turn as he became a disciple of Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, son of the legendary maestro of the Patiala-Kasur gharana (school), Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. He is notable for imagination and sensitivity to lyrics, coupled with his uncanny sense of rhythm.

Echoes of Sufi Chants - Kishori Amonkar Raag Todi 1 of 3
Kishori Amonkar (Marathi: किशोरी आमोणकर) (born April 10, 1931 in Mumbai) is a noted Indian classical vocalist. She sings khyal in the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana style. Kishori Amonkar's mother was Mogubai Kurdikar (1904-2001), a renowned classical vocalist. Kishori has a sister and a brother. According to a biography written by late Datta Marulkar, her father's name was Madhavdas Bhatiya. An article on her mother Mogubai by noted music critic Ramkrishna Bakre mentions that Kishori's father died when she was very young but does not mention the father's name. Amonkar quickly imbibed the nuances of the difficult Jaipur-Atrauli gharana of music. She has developed her own style which emphasizes the emotional content of musical notes while maintaining the rigor of the Jaipur "gaayaki" (singing style). Music critic Vamanrao Deshpande, who was also her guru-bandhu, had hailed her as one of the greatest artists of 20th century. She has dabbled more in lighter forms of music than the earlier generations of Jaipur Gharana musicians. Popularly known as Gana Saraswati (translation: the Saraswati of Singing), Kishori Amonkar has received the following awards: Padma Vibhushan (2002) Rashtrapati Award Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1985) Sangeet Samragni Award (Translation: Queen of Singing) (1997) Padma Bhushan (1987)
Raag Tilak Kamod - Veena Sahasrabuddhe
Tilak Kamod so similar to raag Des, it is difficult for my untrained ears to distinguish between two. Tilak Kamod has the same notations as Des, the subtle difference is which note is stressed. I should not even offer my lack of knowledge when cogent analysis by Mr. Rajan Parrikar is available. Raga Tilak Kamod Nomenclature in Hindustani music can be misleading for there is neither hide nor hair of Kamod in Tilak Kamod. Tilak Kamod works with the same raw material used to fashion Des. The resulting dichotomy resoundingly demonstrates the signal possibilities in the very notion of Raga: a chalan-bheda within a swara set may lead to a radically different melodic organism of equal or more beauty. Indian music, it should be obvious to even freshly-born babies, has no equal in its intellectual depth, range and beauty.

raag Miyan Ki Todi by N. Rajam
Legendary violinist N. Rajam (sister of TN Krishnan, aunt of Kala Ramnath, mother of Sangeeta Shankar, all famous violinists) playing the morning raga Miyan Ki Todi (notice the beautiful morning surroundings: an old temple complex at the banks of the Ganges, boats on the river and birds chilping in the background) in a beautiful poetic scene from the documentary film 'Benares, musiques du Gange' (Yves Billon, 1992 ; France). After many years of studying with legendary singer Omkarnath Thakur, N. Rajam completely revolutionized violin playing in North Indian Hindusthani music by introducing a new vocal (gayaki) style of playing. It was allowed to download this file from the website of Patrick Moutal, a scholar in Indian Classical Music.

Pushparaj Koshti on surbahar / raag Shuddh Sarang - alap
Surbahar (bass sitar) player Pushparaj Koshti performing in Mondiaal Centrum in Haarlem, The Netherlands, 24 May 2009, a segment of the alap in raag Shuddh Sarang. My video&sound-recording here is crappy, my apologies! I had no good equipment available there. When I arrived at the venue I found out -to my surprise- that it was allowed to film the performance. If I had only known this beforehand...! The only thing left for me was shooting some video with a small mediocre photocamera that I happened to have in my trousers. Again, it's really bad looking footage, but it's better than nothing and I think the great performance justifies an upload here. Pushparaj Koshti's playing is marvellous. Most convincing proof of Pushparaj Koshti's great playing you'll get through listening to his latest album -Surbahar, on the Sense World Music label, 2008 - a masterpiece album, comprising a state of the art-recording of a magnificent performance of raag Des. A must hear for evry lover of Indian classical music!
