Miles Davis Quintet - 'Round Midnight - 31 Oct 67 (3 of 4)

Davis' second great quintet, October 31, 1967, Stockholm, Sweden. Complete set. The quintet had recorded both SORCERER and NEFERTITI earlier that year (the combo's third and fourth studio LPs, respectively), and by this time the quintet had essentially abandoned traditional chord-change-based bop, and were playing modal music almost exclusively. Their music was becoming increasingly complex, abstract and free, as Davis moved closer to his electric "fusion" period. With the rhythm section given a much more central role than Davis ever allowed previously, the group was transforming freebop into something else: hypnotic, unpredictable and poetic. Davis was at a creative pinnacle similar to the height his sextet with John Coltrane and Bill Evans reached in 1959. Note: Starting in '67, the quintet began to play live concerts in continuous sets, each song flowing into the next without pause -- and only melodic and tempo changes indicating transition. Set: Agitation (Miles Davis, from ESP, Nov. '65) Footprints (Wayne Shorter, from MILES SMILES, Jan '67) 'Round Midnight (Thelonious Monk, Cootie Williams, from 'ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT, 18 Mar '57) Gingerbread Boy (Jimmy Heath, from MILES SMILES) The Theme (from 'WORKIN, Sept. '59, recorded in '56) Personnel: Miles Davis - tp Wayne Shorter - ts Herbie Hancock - p Ron Carter - b Tony Williams - d

ESP - The Miles Davis Quintet (1965)

"ESP" is the title track from an album recorded in January 1965 by the Miles Davis Quintet. The quintet of Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams would be the most long-lived of Davis' groups, and this was their first studio recording. The album consisted entirely of compositions written by members of the group. Shortly thereafter, Shorter's compositions would begin to dominate the Quintet's recordings, though here he contributes only two of the seven songs. One of these, the title track, is reminiscent of Jackie McLean's "Little Melonae", which Davis had recorded with John Coltrane in 1956. Elgar - Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84 (1918)

Quintet in A minor for Piano and String Quartet, Op. 84 (1918, premiered 1919) I. Moderato - Allegro (00:01) II. Adagio (13:59) III. Andante - Allegro (27:00) A wonderful chamber work for piano and string quartet by English composer Edward Elgar (1857-1934), which he dedicated to Ernest Newman, music critic of the Manchester Guardian. According to Alice Elgar, the atmospheric, ominous quality of the music is a reflection of the natural setting of Elgar's Sussex cottage at Flexham Park near Brinkwells, where he stayed during the summer of 1918. Indeed, Elgar's biographer WH "Billy" Reed has compared Flexham Park to the "Wolf's Glen" in Weber's opera "Der Freischütz". Some musicologists have connected Elgar's description of the opening movement as "ghostly stuff" and hints in Alice Elgar's description that the work might have a programmatic basis to conclude that Edward Bulwer-Lytton's occult novel "A Strange Story" forms a "quasi-programme" underlying the Quintet, as Elgar had ordered a few Bulwer-Lytton novels from the London Library at the time. Whether or not this is true, the Quintet's purely musical content is fascinating enough to merit close listening and analysis (which is why I've provided the score in the video). Piano: Ian Brown Sorrel Quartet Viewers at an academic institution may access this analysis of Elgar's Quintet by Michael Allis, which argues for the Edward Bulwer-Lytton connection: muse.jhu.edu
