Dozens of university students are arrested for demonstrating against a tuition hike. But Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno remains steadfast in charging students more to help close a $3.2 billion budget gap. The students' fight is representative of a larger debate in Puerto Rico, and in the US, about how to solve a severe budget crisis -- and at what cost. Gov. Fortuno, a hawkish fiscal conservative, laid off 20000 government workers in 2009, and suspended all labor negotiations, just like governors on the US mainland are doing today. But two years later Puerto Rico's labor unions are still scrambling to reorganize a largely unemployed population -- nearly 17 percent. Puerto Rico is in its fifth year of recession, and expected to be the world's slowest growing economy if its situation doesn't improve. At question is the degree of economic and social responsibility the US has to its commonwealth state. Fault Lines travels to Puerto Rico to investigate America's legacy as the Island's ruler, and the harsh economic policies that are being imposed on the people who live there. Details: On Monday, June 19th, a day prior to the kick off of the Rip Curl Pro Search WCT "Somewhere in Mexico", a massive swell rocked Puerto Escondido. Beach side cafes were wiped out and water flooded the streets of Playa Zicatela. Two teams of tow-in surfers (Scott Chandler, Chuck Patterson, Carlos 'Coco' Nogales, Ken 'Skindog' Collins, Chad Jackson) went out at first light in what many are calling the biggest Mexican Pipeline in years. Veteran director Dave Ogle (Puerto Underground 4) was kind enough to share his 'secret' filming spots so that David Palmer could capture this epic day on film. Things to do in Puerto Vallarta Mismaloya is a small village, located on the coast of the Bahía de Banderas in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Mismaloya lies on Highway 200, south of Puerto Vallarta.Mismaloya is most famous as the site where the 1963 film The Night of the Iguana was filmed. The set and crew quarters rise up the hill on the south side of the Mismaloya cove. Sadly, the set is only ruins now, and the once-famous John Huston Cafe is an empty shell on top of the hill. Huston once wrote that he was the only person who cared for the place. The movie made Puerto Vallarta famous, but the set has been forgotten. On the other side of Highway 200 from Playa Mismaloya is El Eden, a jungle setting where parts of the movie Predator were filmed.The beach at Playa Mismaloya is located in a lovely cove, with a full view of Los Arcos sea rocks - a great place to snorkel and scuba dive. There are boats which tourists can hire, and the beach is home to several restaurants and trinket peddlers, as well as the hotel Barcelo, a Beautiful Zoo and the La Jolla De Mismaloya Condominiums.
