Protect the Sharks

Sharks play a vital role in the underwater ecosystem as part of nature's complex system of checks and balances. Known as apex predators, they are at the top of the food chain, keeping other aquatic species populations healthy and balanced. Many shark species are endangered and could soon become extinct without our help. According to the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately 100 million sharks are killed each year. Due to their slow growth, late sexual maturity and low number of offspring, they are susceptible to almost any fishing pressure.

Great White Shark Jumping

Aquarium of the Sharks W/ Jaws OST remixed

sharks have been around for about 400 million years. Even before dinosaurs roamed the earth, sharks hunted through the oceans! They're such good survivors that they've had little need to evolve in the last 150 million years. Think sharks are dangerous? The most dangerous sharks are the Great White shark, the Tiger shark, the Hammerhead shark, the Mako shark and the Bull shark. On average, there are only about 100 shark attacks each year and only 10 of those result in a human death. Two-thirds of a shark's brain is dedicated to its keenest sense -- smell. Some sharks have eyes similar to a cat. A mirror-like layer in their eyes allows them to see better in the water. This allows the shark to hunt in clear seas or murky water. To top it off, sharks have a few unusual senses. For instance, they are able to feel vibrations in the water using a line of canals that go from its head to its tail. Called a "lateral line", these canals are filled with water and contain sensory cells with hairs growing out of them. These hairs move when the water vibrates and alerts the shark to potential prey. Sharks also have a sensory organ called the "ampullae of Lorenzini" which they use to "feel" the electrical field coming from its prey. They respire with the use of five to seven gill slits. Sharks have a covering of dermal denticles that protect their skin from damage and parasites and improve fluid dynamics. They have several sets of replaceable teeth.[1] Sharks range in size from the small ...

Project AWARE Foundation

Project AWARE Foundation is a growing movement of scuba divers protecting the ocean planet -- one dive at a time. Over the past two decades of underwater conservation we've learned that divers are true leaders in ocean protection. We're ocean heroes numbering in the millions across the globe. We believe together our actions will make a huge impact and will help to rescue the ocean. With new programs and more online resources than ever before, Project AWARE supports an unprecedented global movement of divers acting in their own communities to protect oceans and implement lasting change. We're focusing in on two major ocean issues --Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris, or trash in our ocean. Truly, there are many conservation issues converging on our ocean planet at once, but we're concentrating on these serious problems where scuba divers are uniquely positioned to directly and positively affect real, long-term change in these two areas. Together, we're re-thinking what's possible and sharing a positive vision for our ocean future. Nature Of The Shark- The Short

This is a five minute short/preview (though complete in itself) of my film of the INCREDIBLE beings known as Sharks!! I've spent three years filming sharks and gathering interviews as I both have tried to better know them and the world they inhabit, as well as become a more competent filmmaker and ecologist! I apologize ahead for some sound troubles (put volume up high or you wont be able to here a few guys speak), but am proud of this first work and hope you will enjoy it as well, and get a unique perspective on the grace and intelligence of sharks. I hope you will join the fight to protect our shark and ocean brethren around the world, so that everyone can have experiences like I have had for a long time to come!! I hope that you will come to appreciate the illusive yet inspiring, NATURE OF THE SHARK!! Thanks to my parents, family, so many friends, Ocean Blue Education and crew, Andrew Eldredge (MUSIC!), Shark Diver Mag, the sharks! and everyone who helped me out is so many ways! -also on a technical note, i'm often asked "did you film this yourself?" ( I guess to be expected when a teenager makes a documentary on sharks) I did 100% the editing, and 95% of the filming myself (use a cannon HV20 in an equinox housing), but had huge help from so many people I briefly thanked above (especially my parents who funded this crazy venture), and was given some footage of myself in the water by Cara Smith and Vinnie Canabal, so extra credit to them! my old teacher and mentor ...

Tarpon fishing under Long Key bridge near Duck Key, Fl. After a 20 minute fight with a tarpon, a 14 foot long hammer head shark attacks and eventually eats the tarpon. We tried our best to protect the tarpon by running it down and creating as much noise and bubbles to confuse the shark and hide the tarpon. After a quick release, the shark returns and I aggressively circle the tarpon as the shark slices at it boat side. After about 5 hits, the shark wins and swims off with the tarpon in its mouth. Moments later, half of the 65lb tarpon floats up and I grab the remains to add to the documentation. The shark returns on a high speed pass and bumps the boat with significant enough force to make Julie scream. I give up on the carcass and Corey gets his hands on it just as the hammer head shark strikes again, this time claiming the remains of his dinner. As this massive shark rolls into a dive, Corey gets a tail grab before it is all over. Conservative size estimations are 14 feet long at about 400lbs. This is the best shark attack footage I have ever seen. This was recorded in HD and is available for resale.

Sharks attack people Dolphins Defend

DivingAccidents, more video: divingaccidents.net This is first Shark video episode, of the award winning 1999 BBC documentary series "Supernatural", where we can learn that dolphins identify themselves with humans and of their eternal rivalry with sharks. Next story Surfer Todd Endris needed a miracle. The shark — a monster great white that came out of nowhere — had hit him three times, peeling the skin off his back and mauling his right leg to the bone. That's when a pod of bottlenose dolphins intervened, forming a protective ring around Endris, allowing him to get to shore, where quick first aid provided by a friend saved his life. The Shark attack occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 28, just before 11 am at Marina State Park off Monterey, Calif., where the 24-year-old owner of Monterey Aquarium Services had gone with friends for a day of the sport they love. Nearly four months later, Endris, who is still undergoing physical therapy to repair muscle damage suffered during the attack, is back in the water and on his board in the same spot where he almost lost his life.

Making Marine Conservation Cool: Derrick Whitcomb, The Shark Entrepreneur

In a recent blog post, Project Blue Hope (PBH) founder, Christine Beggs, writes about the few key ingredients necessary for presenting marine conservation as cool in the eyes of the younger generation. Read them all at: projectbluehope.com On a mission to uncover the secret recipe for making a conservation-mindset the next big trend, PBH has set out to create a short film aimed at understanding why and when kids care about the ocean and what they are doing to protect it. In order to understand the path forward to educating youth about ocean conservation, we decided we needed to understand how, why, when and where we have currently been successful doing so. One of our interviewees for the film was a young man named Derrick Whitcomb. Just turning 13 years old, Derrick is passionate about the ocean and following in the Jewish tradition, he will be having a Bar Mitzvah to celebrate his transition from boyhood into manhood in the Jewish Community. An important part of this tradition includes doing mitzvoth (good deeds) and taking part in Tikkun Olam ("repairing the world"). Derrick chose to do his mitzvah service project to save the ocean and protect marine life. Specifically, he choose to raise awareness for shark conservation by selling "RESPECT" wristbands for the UM-RJ Dunlap Adopt-a-Shark Marine Conservation Program, which are available for sale at www.derrickwhitcomb.com His goal is to raise $2000 for a shark satellite tag for scientific research and conservation. Whalesharks in "Just a Dream" by Elisabeth Lauwerys - Aqualise

Whalesharks travel thousands of miles along their migratory routes. Scuba divers in the Gulf of Thailand are lucky enough to see them passing through our waters on a regular basis. Since I opened Oceans Below Underwater Video Productions and Training here on Koh Tao in 2005, we have seen the size of the sharks in these waters decrease and their migratory patterns disrupted. In those days it wasn't unusual to see whalesharks 6-7 meters long making appearances at our dive sites. Now we rarely see them larger than 4 meters. Whereas, years ago we saw them quite regularly only in the spring and fall seasons, now we see them coming throughout the year. Whether it is due to global warming, over-fishing, loss of habitat, or something else, entirely; I'm not suggesting any causes behind these changes, but I doubt that it says anything positive about the prospects for these majestic creatures. This short movie shows the beauty of the whaleshark in it's environment. I have pieced it together from HD footage I have collected over the years on Koh Tao and edited it to Aqualise's hauntingly beautiful musical piece, Just A Dream. Please help protect our seas.

Shark Alarm - Palau

March 2010 The tiny pacific nation of Palau has declared itself the worlds first national shark sanctuary. A large proportion of the 100 million sharks killed each year, are hunted in its territorial waters. This carnage is being fuelled by Asias rapidly growing appetite for shark fin soup. The sharks are captured, have their fins hacked off and are then thrown overboard to die. If you are a guest of honour they give you a bowl of shark fin soup, says Johnson Toribiong, Palaus president, sometimes they catch sharks illegally, sometimes they catch tuna illegally. This tiny island has warned the world it will protect its natural resources, but with only one patrol boat, can the shark sanctuary ever be enforced? Shark activist Dermott Keane believes they cant do it alone; Palau needs assistance in enforcing this sanctuary.

Coral Reef Decline with the Loss of Sharks

For millions of years, sharks have played an important role in the marine environment, but around the world, shark populations are declining. This has serious consequences for our oceans. Research initiated by the PEW Shark Campaign has shown correlations between the balance of shark population and the balance of the marine environment, including negative impacts on corals. The impact of those researches is of special importance for understanding how actions should be taken to protect the shark species and the health of the oceans. Outrage after whale shark is tied up for two and a half hours so girl can 'surf' on it

Outrage after whale shark is tied up for two and a half hours so girl can 'surf' on it, A Facebook picture of a girl 'surfing' a captured whale shark has sparked outrage among environmentalists and animal lovers. The girl, identified as Carinn Lestolis, her family and other tourists gathered around the shark in the waters of Barangay Granada in Boljoon, Philippines, after its tail was tied to a post. They were seen petting the three-metre long fish just off shore while fishermen held on to it. Miss Lestolis was then helped onto the creature where she appeared to use it as a surfboard. The giant shark, which eats tiny plants and animals, had been caught in a fishing net, according to Cebu Daily News. Fisherman Pablo Trapero, claimed it had to be dragged to shallow waters in order to be released. But a resident in the town allegedly paid 100 pesos (£1.47) to have it tied up so tourists could see it, the Sun Star reported. The shark was then subjected to a two-and-a-half-hour ordeal before being released, Maylyn Avenido, from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the Philippines, said. Ms Avenido described the scene as a 'fiesta' (feast). 'The children were jumping around in the water touching the whale shark all over its body,' she told the Sun Star. 'They touched the animal and stayed in the water with it. I told them once again to set the shark free or else I would call the police. It was only at that instance that they set the whale shark free.' Ms ...

"Protect Our Sharks," Say Bahamas' Children | Pew

This PSA was produced by The Bahamas National Trust (BNT), in collaboration with Pew Environment Group, in support of a grassroots petition to protect sharks in Bahamian waters. Sharks are in trouble globally, and there are few locations where healthy shark populations still exist. In The Bahamas, a 20 year-old ban on longline fishing gear has left its waters as one of the few places in the world with relatively healthy shark populations. This has paid off for the small island nation. According to The Bahamas Diving Association, diving tourism has contributed up to $800 million to the Bahamian economy since the longline ban. There are, however, no laws there that specifically protect sharks. Pew is currently working with The Bahamas National Trust to gain permanent protections in all of The Bahamas' Exclusive Economic Zone, an area encompassing approximately 630000 square kilometers of ocean. By establishing comprehensive protections for sharks, not only will sharks be permanently safeguarded against other threats, but the health of the marine environment and the economy of The Bahamas will be conserved for generations to come.

VV Brown Shark in the Water

Conservative estimates reckon that between 30 to 70 million sharks are killed annually in commercial and recreational fisheries, and some conservation organisations put that figure closer to 100 million. Sharks are killed for a whole manner of reasons, their meat is used for food, fins for soup, cartilage in health supplements, livers for oil, skin for leather and teeth for curios, some are even killed for the sheer pleasure of it. And demand is increasing. As whitefish stocks have collapsed, previously unprofitable shark fisheries have become commercially viable and shark meat more acceptable. Even in the most optimistic of scenarios this slaughter cannot be sustained. Sharks do not produce huge numbers of eggs like other fish, their young are either born live or in egg cases, and the average brood is only about 12 pups. Sharks first appeared on earth some 400 million years ago, before land vertebrates and before many plants had colonised continents. Modern sharks, such as the mako and the porbeagle, are regarded as living unchanged from the species we see today, 100 million years ago. The oldest great white shark teeth date from about 65 million years ago, around the time of the extinction of the dinosaurs. The fact that present-day sharks have not changed substantially for the last 100 million years suggests that they may have attained a level of evolutionary perfection that is unmatched by any other animal. And yet during the last 20 years alone humans have done more ...

This video by the American Museum of Natural History explains the shark fin tracking research of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science. Because of the demand for shark fin soup, the global hunt for sharks has now reached immense proportions: up to 73 million sharks per year, according to Institute scientists. Fin traders seldom reveal their sources, so it's difficult to know where the sharks are hunted. Researchers from the Institute are using genetic tracking to pinpoint the geographic origins of sharks whose fins are sold in Hong Kong markets. The information can aid international trade agencies deciding how to best protect the fish.
