protect the sharks
"Protect Our Sharks," Say Bahamas' Children | Pew
This PSA was produced by The Bahamas National Trust (BNT), in collaboration with Pew Environment Group, in support of a grassroots petition to protect sharks in Bahamian waters. Sharks are in trouble globally, and there are few locations where healthy shark populations still exist. In The Bahamas, a 20 year-old ban on longline fishing gear has left its waters as one of the few places in the world with relatively healthy shark populations. This has paid off for the small island nation. According to The Bahamas Diving Association, diving tourism has contributed up to $800 million to the Bahamian economy since the longline ban. There are, however, no laws there that specifically protect sharks. Pew is currently working with The Bahamas National Trust to gain permanent protections in all of The Bahamas' Exclusive Economic Zone, an area encompassing approximately 630000 square kilometers of ocean. By establishing comprehensive protections for sharks, not only will sharks be permanently safeguarded against other threats, but the health of the marine environment and the economy of The Bahamas will be conserved for generations to come.

Protect the Sharks
Sharks play a vital role in the underwater ecosystem as part of nature's complex system of checks and balances. Known as apex predators, they are at the top of the food chain, keeping other aquatic species populations healthy and balanced. Many shark species are endangered and could soon become extinct without our help. According to the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately 100 million sharks are killed each year. Due to their slow growth, late sexual maturity and low number of offspring, they are susceptible to almost any fishing pressure.

Shark Task Force Executive Producer, George C. Schellenger, takes us behind the scenes as he encounters a Great Hammerhead at close range. On a recent trip to the Bahamas he came eye-to-eye with this alien-looking fish - and he swam away with new passion to protect all sharks. This comes as the UN rejects a proposal to protect Hammerheads. Sharks in this category may have dropped 85% or more, due to overfishing and the demand for the Hammerhead's fins. Assemblymember Fong's California Shark Protection Act
(Sacramento) -- The California Shark Protection Act seeks not only to protect sharks but also to protect marine life as a whole by preserving the overall health of the ocean's ecosystem. Assemblymember Paul Fong (D-Mountain View) has introduced landmark legislation (Assembly Bill 376) to ban shark finning, a process where the fins and tails are cut from living sharks, and the remainder of the fish, which is often still alive, is thrown back into the ocean. Driving this market for fins is the demand for shark fin soup, an often very expensive dish associated with affluence and a longtime Chinese tradition. "Anything that is unhealthy, that the culture is practicing, we should stop doing it. We used to bind women's feet and that was unhealthy for the woman" says Assemblymember Fong. Shark fin is a luxury food item that can and has been replaced by sustainable premium seafood alternatives that do not contain high levels of toxic mercury. More details on this Assembly Web Report.

What If You Could Be a Shark? - Conservation International (CI) Eco-Byte
www.conservation.org There are more than 400 species of sharks in our big blue ocean, so if you were a shark, what kind would you be? How about a tiger Shark, or a bull shark, or a blue shark? What about a whale shark, a hammerhead, or a so-called 'walking' shark? Our teams found this unique species using its fins to move along the ocean floor in the highly biodiverse Bird's Head Seascape of Indonesia several years ago. Through our Seascapes partnerships, and our support of Marine Managed Areas, CI is working to protect all sharks and their ecosystems so that these apex predators can continue to thrive as they have for millions of years, and provide their critical benefits to the ocean and to people.
Coral Reef Decline with the Loss of Sharks
For millions of years, sharks have played an important role in the marine environment, but around the world, shark populations are declining. This has serious consequences for our oceans. Research initiated by the PEW Shark Campaign has shown correlations between the balance of shark population and the balance of the marine environment, including negative impacts on corals. The impact of those researches is of special importance for understanding how actions should be taken to protect the shark species and the health of the oceans. Project AWARE Foundation
Project AWARE Foundation is a growing movement of scuba divers protecting the ocean planet -- one dive at a time. Over the past two decades of underwater conservation we've learned that divers are true leaders in ocean protection. We're ocean heroes numbering in the millions across the globe. We believe together our actions will make a huge impact and will help to rescue the ocean. With new programs and more online resources than ever before, Project AWARE supports an unprecedented global movement of divers acting in their own communities to protect oceans and implement lasting change. We're focusing in on two major ocean issues --Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris, or trash in our ocean. Truly, there are many conservation issues converging on our ocean planet at once, but we're concentrating on these serious problems where scuba divers are uniquely positioned to directly and positively affect real, long-term change in these two areas. Together, we're re-thinking what's possible and sharing a positive vision for our ocean future. Whalesharks in "Just a Dream" by Elisabeth Lauwerys - Aqualise
Whalesharks travel thousands of miles along their migratory routes. Scuba divers in the Gulf of Thailand are lucky enough to see them passing through our waters on a regular basis. Since I opened Oceans Below Underwater Video Productions and Training here on Koh Tao in 2005, we have seen the size of the sharks in these waters decrease and their migratory patterns disrupted. In those days it wasn't unusual to see whalesharks 6-7 meters long making appearances at our dive sites. Now we rarely see them larger than 4 meters. Whereas, years ago we saw them quite regularly only in the spring and fall seasons, now we see them coming throughout the year. Whether it is due to global warming, over-fishing, loss of habitat, or something else, entirely; I'm not suggesting any causes behind these changes, but I doubt that it says anything positive about the prospects for these majestic creatures. This short movie shows the beauty of the whaleshark in it's environment. I have pieced it together from HD footage I have collected over the years on Koh Tao and edited it to Aqualise's hauntingly beautiful musical piece, Just A Dream. Please help protect our seas.

Shark Dive UNEXSO HD
Obviously these Caribbean reef sharks are attracted by a free meal. UNEXSO has been doing this sharks feed for 20+ years. To my surprise these sharks also seemed to really enjoy having their snout stroked by the divemaster resulting in them being put in a catatonic or hypnotized state. A state called TONIC IMMOBILITY. The sharks came back for more and basically they did not seem to be very interested in the food that they dive master has in his canister. These dives works to protect both people and sharks by producing a greater understanding of sharks and their behavior. I think through greater understanding, people work to protect sharks from such unsustainable harvest has shark finning. Sharks are beautiful animals and worth protecting.

You can help to protect sharks, visit- www.savingsharks.com and sign www.thepetitionsite.com filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth. Driven by passion fed from a life-long fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas. Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala. Resulting in pirate boat ramming, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives. Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth's history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few ...
Shark Alarm - Palau
March 2010 The tiny pacific nation of Palau has declared itself the worlds first national shark sanctuary. A large proportion of the 100 million sharks killed each year, are hunted in its territorial waters. This carnage is being fuelled by Asias rapidly growing appetite for shark fin soup. The sharks are captured, have their fins hacked off and are then thrown overboard to die. If you are a guest of honour they give you a bowl of shark fin soup, says Johnson Toribiong, Palaus president, sometimes they catch sharks illegally, sometimes they catch tuna illegally. This tiny island has warned the world it will protect its natural resources, but with only one patrol boat, can the shark sanctuary ever be enforced? Shark activist Dermott Keane believes they cant do it alone; Palau needs assistance in enforcing this sanctuary.

SAVE OUR PLANET - Shark victims unite to save their attackers
SAVE OUR PLANET... Survivors unite in shark preservation group. On Monday, September 13, nine people from five different countries came together at the United Nations Environment Program New York office in the USA to speak on behalf of a campaign organized by the Pew Environment Group. The campaign is seeking greater protection of sharks, whose numbers are diminishing sharply as some 73 million are killed each year for a dish known as shark fin soup. According to international researchers who have observed the practice, the sharks are often subjected to a cruel process known as finning, in which their fins are removed while they are still alive. The sharks are then discarded, finless, into the sea, where they sink and are left to die on the ocean floor. Some shark populations have decreased by 80%, with nearly a third of all species now classified as endangered or near-threatened with extinction. The nine people who arrived to support the Pew Environment Group's campaign, which includes a call to ban finning, are further distinguished by a common experience, namely, that all have endured serious injury or even loss of a limb from their own encounters with sharks. Australian Navy diver Paul de Gelder, for instance, whose right hand and lower right leg were lost to a shark during a dive last year, said that he wanted to help give a voice to an animal that can't speak for itself. He stated, "We're decimating the population of sharks just for a bowl of soup." Mr. de Gelder ...

Whale Shark Slaughter in India- Shores of Silence
A shortened version of the film 'Shores of Silence' The film is an effort to create awareness and gather support to protect and conserve this species. The aim is to eventually help create policies to ban whale shark trade in India and find sustainable alternatives for the local fishing community. This film moved the government of India into bringing in legislation and banning the killing of the Whale Sharks on Indian shores. The Whale Shark was declared protected under the Indian Wildlife Act- 1972, bringing it at par with the tigers and the Rhino. This was a landmark move. It was the first marine species to be protected under the Indian law. In November 2002, at the international CITES meet in Chile, Santiago, a negative voting changed into an overwhelming positive after this film was shown to the delegates - bringing global protection of the Whale Shark and giving the largest fish in the world a new lease of life.
