The Private Prison Problem

This video shows the brutal beating of 24 year-old inmate Hanni Elabed by another inmate at the Idaho Correctional Center (ICC). The video confirms claims made by the ACLU that the private prison, run by the for-profit Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), promotes a culture of violence. After the ACLU sued CCA they agreed to make improvements, and violence at ICC is down. Now CCA is trying to buy more prisons. That's a terrible idea. 7.1 Million Americans are in the Prisons system so Corporations can Profit from your Tax money !

America which is known as the freest country in the world has incarcerated more of it's citizens than the rest of the world combined. 7.1 million Americans are either in prison, on probation or under correctional supervision. The numbers continue to climb each year as more prisons are built nationwide. News journalist Fareed Zakaria from CNN goes in depth to show viewers how much the American government as well as private corporations spend building prisons apposed to schools. He goes on to say that our elected officials have been bought out by lobbyist. They want the politicians to pave the way for more prisons by passing more laws of enslavement to insure a steady flow of inmates to occupy the cells. America has entered into a hell like period where people are worth more in prison than free and working as all jobs are being shipped to China. America is being de-industrialized and destroyed by design in the name of clean energy and saving the planet. Government staged terror attacks are giving them the excuse to spy on Americans and destroy the Constitution which protects our freedom. An open air prison is being built around the population in the name of safety and security and the majority of people believe the government wants to protect them from terror which is government sponsored to create an atmosphere of fear. It appears that things will have to get much worse before people realize the US government has been high-jacked by International Bankers that now control ...

Guard Killed In Riot At Private Prison In Mississippi

"A Mississippi jail is on lockdown today after a Sunday night riot left one prison guard dead and as many as 20 inmates and guards injured. According to sheriff's reports, the violence began as a gang feud and soon engulfed the privately operated facility, which holds 2500 non-citizens incarcerated for reentering the United States after deportation and for other charges. But the fragments of information that have emerged from inmates and advocates suggest that the violence had more to do with a pattern of abuse and neglect that has emerged at privately run, for-profit prisons. The Adams County sheriff's office and the Corrections Corporation of America, the behemoth prison company that operates the facility for the federal Bureau of Prisons, have tightly controlled news of the riot...".* Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur discuss on The Young Turks. *Read more from Seth Freed Wessler at Alternet.org: www.alternet.org Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Secret prisons in Europe, finds EU special committee

www.euronews.com Secret detention centres and an organised system supporting the CIA's rendition programme were in place in several EU countries, according to the findings of European Parliament special committee. A report investigating allegations of human rights violations claims arrangements existed in Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Denmark, Finland and Britain. The European Parliament organised hearings with NGO's and human rights institutions to gather additional data about the alleged complicity of some EU member-states' governments in the CIA's rendition programme. "Nothing has been done in member states to truly investigate and get to the bottom of the problem. There is an obligation not only not to torture or to be an accomplice in torture. But there is an obligation to investigate, to ensure accountability," said Gerald Staberock, Secretary General of the World Organisation Against Torture. Many of the inquiries conducted in recent years by member states have been classified. Those findings were not made available for the follow up report that the European parliament is preparing. The report's author says a joined up approach is imperative. Acknowledging the failures or difficulties members states have had in tackling the problem, the European Union should take this issue into its own hands so that finally, the information can become freely accessible," said Hélène Flautre, MEP and rapporteur for Civil Liberties Committee. The European parliament will send a ...

Ben McLeish - Prison, Punishment and Profit | Z-Day 2012 [ The Zeitgeist Movement ]

*Please sign up for our main Mailing List: www.thezeitgeistmovement.com * "Visibility is a Trap." - Michel Foucault The modern incarnation of the prison system is evaluated at its root value set, and core functions. Discussed are the origins of prison in torture and public spectacle, its inversion into modern incarceration models, and the morphing of the carceral model into one which reflects the dominant economic value system - profit before intended function, and its resulting violent social costs. Additionally, prison's effects upon non-criminals (including guards) are detailed in order to demonstrate the system's wholly undermining effects upon social integrity, regardless of criminality. The solution to crime is not more prisons, but the wholesale reorientation of society to a supportive, human-centered global citizenry, where the causes of crime are dealt with by the removal of stresses on the individual level, and the replacement of a competitive, divisive economic-social model with one of support, collaboration and rational, humane global village. The lack of investment in infrastructure is common in prisons not just in Peru but across Latin America, where it is giving way to systematic persecution by certain groups and individuals. Russian Prison System Documentary

The Mark of Cain. Producer: Alix Lambert; Creative Commons license: CC0 1.0 Universal The Mark of Cain documents the fading art form and language of Russian criminal tattoos, formerly a forbidden topic in Russia. The now vanishing practice is seen as reflecting the transition of the broader Russian society. Filmed in some of Russia;s most notorious prisons, including the fabled White Swan, the interviews with prisoners, guards, and criminologists reveal the secret language of The Zone and The Code of Thieve. The prisoners of the Stalinist Gulag, or "Zone," as it is called, developed a complex social structure (documented as early as the 1920s) that incorporated highly symbolic tattooing as a mark of rank. The existence of these inmates at prisons and forced labor camps was treated by the state as a deeply-kept secret. In the 1990s, Russia's prison population exploded, with overcrowding among the worst in the world. Some estimates suggest that in the last generation over thirty million of Russia's inmates have had tattoos even though the process is illegal inside Russian prisons. The Mark of Cain examines every aspect of the tattooing, from the actual creation of the tattoo ink, interviews with the tattooers and soberly looks at the double-edged sword of prison tattoos. In many ways, they were needed to survive brutal Russian prisons, but mark the prisoner for life, which complicates any readmission to normal society they may have. Tattoos expressly identify what the ...

In prison for debt

If owing money isn't a criminal offense anymore in America, why are so many debtors being sent to prison? People need to pay the bills, says New Deal 2.0's Bryce Covert, but throwing them in jail won't solve anything. As Americans use credit cards to charge food and clothing as prices go higher and wages only drop, they need to be punished for being fraudulent, says Covert—but not by putting them in prison. Helping Women Continue Their Education After Prison

This is the VOA Special English Education Report , from voaspecialenglish.com | http Some women's prisons in the United States offer classes for college credit. But when the prisoners are released, they may not have much chance to continue their education. In two thousand, a woman named Barbara Martinsons started a program to help these former prisoners. She established the College and Community Fellowship. Ms. Martinsons taught at Manhattan Marymount College in New York City. She has also taught college courses at a women's prison in New York state. The College and Community Fellowship provides advice to former prisoners. It also helps them gain admission to college. That process can be very difficult for anyone, let alone a person with a prison record. The group also provides financial aid to members attending college. Members of the College and Community Fellowship are called CCF Fellows. Some have earned not only college degrees but master's degrees and a doctorate. Selina Fulford has already earned one master's degree and is working on her second. She is now an adjunct professor at the College of New Rochelle in New York state. About seventy percent of those in the program work full time while studying. Nationally, one-third of women who have been in prison are later sent back for committing other crimes or violating the terms of their release. By comparison, almost none of the CCF fellows have been sent back behind bars. The Reverend Vivian Nixon, a minister, heads ...
