New World Monkeys (Primates) - PREVIEW

Purchase: www.der.org This program is designed to introduce Primatology students to the range of monkeys of the Super family Ceboidea originating from Central and South America. Material on twenty -two species is included, covering all five of the families recently defined by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. In this video we are provided with a wealth of information about size, habitat, range, sexual dimorphism, diet, and communication patterns of each species. This program is suitable for both introductory level and as a focus for discussion by more advanced students. a video by Anne Zeller from the Primates series distributed by Documentary Educational Resources

Five Species (Primates) - PREVIEW

Purchase: www.der.org Three species of monkeys and two apes living in their natural habitat in Africa are compared in this video. The monkeys include the veret, the blue monkey and the black and white colobus, while the apes are common chimpanzees and eastern lowland gorillas. This footage, shot by a primatologist, includes nuances of behavior and social interaction which are not usually included in more commercial productions. Many sequences are long enough to allow the observer to watch behavior unfold between animals and learn what kinds of details to look for in live observation. The same types of behavior are recorded for each species (as much as possible) to permit comparisons to be drawn between diet and foraging patterns, infant care, locomotion and predator defense mechanisms. The videos are intended to allow the audience to see the same types of behavior by different species in different habitats and to draw the comparisons themselves. This format provides a condensed view of the life of several species thus emphasizing the variability and the adaptive nature of primates rather than focusing on the details of one form. This is a useful teaching device. The particular areas of interest in this video are the inclusion of the rarely filmed blue monkey, black and white colobus and eastern lowland gorilla, as well as the division of a monkey carcass by the chimpanzees and the interactions between humans and blue monkeys in a park in Nairobi. a video by Anne Zeller ...

Our Primate Cousins

Photo slideshow of various primates I've worked with at a wild animal park (except the orangutans and gorillas, which were photographed elsewhere). Humans belong to the taxonomic Order Primates, which is comprised of 11 Families, 52 Genera, & 181 species. Primates are divided into two main groups: Prosimians (literally "before monkeys/apes) and Anthropoids (literally "man like"). The evolution of primates is characterized by trends toward mobile limbs, grasping hands, a flattened face, binocular vision, a large, complex brain, & a reduced reproductive rate. Most Primates are well adapted to arboreal living (living in trees). Primate evolution occurred primarily during the Cenozoic Era, Prosimians first branching off in the early Eocene Epoch 58 mya (million years ago). Around 33 mya, during the Oligocene Epoch, the Anthropoids split off into 3 main groups: New World Monkeys (w/prehensile tails), Old World Monkeys (w/out prehensile tails), & the Hominoids (eventual Apes & Humans w/out any tails). In the Miocene Epoch, around 15 mya, Asian Apes & African Apes diverged paths. At approx. 6 mya, African Apes & Human lineage split, producing Hominids (members of the taxonomic Human Family Hominidae) in a region of Central Africa called the Great Rift Valley. There, dense jungle gave way to great savannah plains, & bipedalism became a helpful adaptation in surviving in a high grass environment w/a variety of predators. To this day, Chimpanzees & Humans share 98.5% of the same ...

Highway Of Life: From Mammals To Primates

www.facebook.com ... Evolution (Part 3): Highway of Life (Episode 3): From Mammals To Primates --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- The earliest mammal-like reptiles, called pelycosaurs ruled the earth for about 40 million years, and gave rise to the therapsids...one step closer to mammals. Therapsids are the direct ancestor of mammals. But before we say good bye to reptiles, let's pause and look down their temporal highway. Their descendants include the crocodilians, the dinosaurs and the birds. Back to our own road, Mammals are directly ahead. It is now 220 million years ago and the cynodonts have arrived on the scene. They have nearly all the features of mammals. Most early mammals were small and shrew-like animals that fed on insects. It is likely that they had a constant body temperature, milk glands for their young, and the beginning of a neocortex region of the brain. But this is also the era of the first dinosaurs, so our ancestors will have to wait for their turn to rule. 125 million years ago, two new developments paralleled each other, marsupials and eutheria. The marsupials would give rise to kangaroos and their cousins, but our line lies with eutheria which have a placenta. The earliest eutheria resembled a small mouse. 90 million years ago, we part lines with the ancestors of elephants and manatees, 85 million years ago, so long to the predecessors of horses, dogs and cats 75 million years ago ...

Mudvayne - Internal Primates Forever

Just a simple slideshow of Mudvayne's Internal Primates Forever. Lyrics: Cop provisions feed my addictions mistakes I made then I opened up the holes and they crawled in, Now when it's time for the feed they won't let me forget, They ride upon my back and they'll fuck me with their need, My invisible enemies all my monkeys Their coming they're coming their coming they're coming to take me away. Disgusted with my position so submissive I am the only way we get away is give in sharpen up the razors stab the needles into pipes to kill cravings so sick of this in me can't stand the want to need can't get free always got a grip on me There's no use to fight this wrenching tourniquet of deprivation obedience subservience leads to substance Do you want more give it to me Leave my motivation to chemical dependency no room for patience Don't want it need it come on right now [chorus voice 2] Everything I've become now is everything I didn't want to be Every time I try to run away I fall on my face they drag me back Every time I try to run away I fall on my face Help! They won't leave me alone If I would have known back then what I know now I 'd take it back If I would have known back then what I know now I 'd take it back, I'd take it back I'd take it all fuckin' back Stay away stay away Hold me I'm shaking violently Pull me out of my covering Mold me into a new man Lull me into a deep sleep There's no use to fight this wrenching tourniquet of deprivation obedience subservience ...

[10] Vida - Primates [Parte 1]

3/6 Life BBC ~ Primates Episode

www.youtube.com LINK PART 2 youtu.be ~ Part 4 LInk Life" is a Nature documentary series made by BBC television, first broadcast as part of the BBC's Darwin Season[1] on BBC One and BBC HD from October to December 2009. The series takes a global view of the specialised strategies and extreme behaviour that living things have developed in order to survive; what Charles Darwin termed "the struggle for existence". Four years in the making. Intelligence, curiosity and complex societies have enabled primates to exploit many different habitats. In Ethiopia, male Hamadryas baboons restore discipline after a skirmish with a rival troop. In Japanese macaque society, only those members from the correct bloodlines are permitted to use thermal springs in winter; others are left out in the cold. Examples of primate communication include a silverback gorilla advertising his territory though vocalisations and chest-beating, and the piercing calls of spectral tarsiers which help keep their group together. In Thailand's rainforests, lar gibbons use song to reinforce sexual and family bonds. By contrast, ring-tailed lemurs in Madagascar broadcast sexual signals using scent glands. A young orangutan's upbringing equips it with all the skills it needs to survive in the forest, including finding food, moving through the canopy and building a shelter. On South Africa's Cape Peninsula, chacma baboons forage kelp beds exposed by the lowest tides for nutritious shark eggs and mussels. White-faced ...

An Introduction to the Primates - PREVIEW

Purchase: www.der.org This video covers 41 species of primates ranging from the 300 gram sized pygmy slow loris to the 200 kilogram sized gorilla. The animals are organized by taxonomic category, although formal terms are not used. Instead, they are grouped by their shared features, in an effort to provide visual manifestations of such features as the tapetum (reflective layer in the eye of nocturnal prosimians), sexual dimorphism, grooming claws, and dental combs. Most of the animals are recorded in their social groups and some, such as the Indri and Sifaka, in their natural habitats in Madagascar. This video is intended as a comparative introduction for the Primate Series of films which covers most of the major taxonomic categories of primates in more detail. a video by Anne Zeller from the Primates series distributed by Documentary Educational Resources

FACT: You are a Primate

Dr. Ken Miller talks about the relationship between Homo sapiens and the other primates. He discusses a recent finding (2005) of the Human Genome Project which identifies the exact point of fusion of two primate chromosomes that resulted in human chromosome #2. Proving that you are a primate. Period. Generation and annotation of the DNA sequences of human chromosomes 2 and 4 Nature 434, 724-731 (7 April 2005) | doi:10.1038/nature03466; Received 25 October 2004; Accepted 11 February 2005 www.nature.com "Chromosome 2 is unique to the human lineage of evolution, having emerged as a result of head-to-head fusion of two acrocentric chromosomes that remained separate in other primates. The precise fusion site has been located in 2q13--2q14.1 (ref. 2; hg16:114455823--114455838), where our analysis confirmed the presence of multiple subtelomeric duplications to chromosomes 1, 5, 8, 9, 10, 12, 19, 21 and 22 (Fig. 3; Supplementary Fig. 3a, region A). During the formation of human chromosome 2, one of the two centromeres became inactivated (2q21, which corresponds to the centromere from chimp chromosome 13) and the centromeric structure quickly deterioriated."
