Scientist gets posthumous Nobel prize
A pioneering scientist who died just a few days ago has been confirmed as this year's Nobel Prize winner for medicine. The award for Canada-born Ralph Steinman had been thrown into doubt because only living scientists are considered eligible. But the committee said their decision stood leading to the first posthumous Nobel prize in half a century. Steinman and two others were recognised for their work on the immune system. The Rockefeller University, Steinman's former employer, said he had been diagnosed with cancer four years ago, but had managed to extend his life using his own immuno-therapy. Al Jazeera's Caroline Malone reports.

Story US President Barack Obama bestowed the US military's highest award to the family of Special Forces soldier, Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, on Wednesday (October 6). Miller has been attributed with saving the lives of seven of his Special Forces teammates and 15 Afghan soldiers while serving as the point for a night security patrol in Afghanistan, according to the US military's website. "Devotion to duty. An abiding sense of honor. A profound love of country. These were the virtues that found their ultimate expression when Rob -- just 24 years old and on his second tour -- met his testing point on January 25, 2008," Obama said of Miller. During an insurgent ambush, Miller volunteered to lead his team of Green Berets after their captain was injured during a firefight in the Chenar Khar Balley near the Pakistan border. A good athlete and former gymnast, Miller worked to provide cover for his teammates. As his teammates moved away from the fire, Miller moved forward, firing, throwing grenades and radioing for help, according to the military's website. Miller, who was on his second deployment to Afghanistan, had learned some Pashto during his first deployment and could also give directions to the Afghan soldiers during the fight. His teammates could hear Miller giving the position of the enemy over the radio until he was hit and mortally wounded during the firefight. Tchaikovsky - The Storm (Overture) Op.76 (Posthumous) Part 1
This is an early work of Tchaikovsky written in 1864 when the composer was 24 yrs old. This overture is the first substantial compostion he wrote. The overture was inspired by the play "The Storm" by Aleksandr Ostrovsky. This piece was never published or even performed in Tchaikovsky's lifetime as he didn't think it was good enough (not to mention the poor criticism it received by some of his contempories!) However, I really like it and thought I would upload it for your pleasure hehe Apologies for the odd crackling sound! It was taken from an old CD which is slightly scratched in places :( It isn't that distracting though I don't think? Anyway enjoy!!

chopin's nocturne no. 19 in E minor (opus 72 no. 1) this is my first upload on this account, sorry it's not perfect but this was my 18th attempt, simply cos the first 3 or 4 times i mucked it up, the next 10 or so times it was perfect but my parents came in noisily or opened the squeaky door (or moaned at me asking to fix their glasses) and the rest were perfect but my camera kept turning off after about 30 secs - i'd given up by that point so this one it is... please note the scary runs section is usually perfect i dont know what happened here :/ sorry if my piano sounds like a xylophone - my camera doesnt like it :/ i know i made mistakes but constructive criticism would be nice :) (and i know my technique is awful lol :/) enjoy :D
