Nigel Farage: So-called 'populists' are actually democrats

www.ukipmeps.org • European Parliament, Strasbourg - 10 May 2011 • Speaker Nigel Farage MEP, UKIP, Co-President of the EFD Group in the European Parliament (Europe of Freedom and Democracy) • Debate: Council and Commission statements on migration flows and asylum and their impact on Schengen .................................. • Full transcript: Mr President, Yesterday indeed was Europe Day. And in the courtyard here we had armed soldiers; we had the Luftwaffe band and imperial eagles; we had the flag being paraded, being raised, the European anthem - it was a display of militarism and EU nationalism. I thought and hoped it was all just a bad dream. But today we've got you Mr Barroso. You begin of course by reiterating the fact that the free movement of peoples is the embodiment of the European project. You then go on to say that it is the duty of member states to share the burdens of migratory flows into Europe. You advocate a common EU immigration policy. But of course you know that you're losing, because the row that's blown up between Italy and France shows that when there's a crisis, whether it's the theory of European integration or the practicality of the nation state, it is the nation state that wins. So you're worried that you're losing. And in your defence of your position; in your defence of your beloved acquis communautaire - your body of law - you resort to intolerance; you resort to nationalism. You make me realise that what I saw yesterday was actually for ...

Debates about contemporary European politics increasingly focus on the putative threat of a resurgent populism. Worried observers sometimes point to the rise of far-right, xenophobic parties, especially in eastern Europe, but ordinary people's backlash against the European Union, throughout the continent, is also often described as taking a populist form. The term populism is generally understood to refer to any ideology that pits a virtuous and homogeneous people against a set of elites and dangerous outsiders who, wrapped together, are seen as depriving the sovereign people of their rights, values, prosperity, identity and voice. Populism is considered the opposite of paternalism, whereby bureaucratic elites know best when it comes to making important decisions and forming social policy. Superficially at least, there appears to be striking evidence of a new populism. In the Nordic countries, populist anti-immigration rhetoric is challenging and ...

How Populism Almost Defeated the US Constitution - Walter Dellinger

Complete video at: fora.tv Former Solicitor General Walter Dellinger delves into why some early opponents of the US Constitution took issue with ratifying the document. Dellinger describes how Constitutional supporters were nearly derailed by advocates opposed to a strong central government -- a debate he compares to the populist politics of today. ----- Walter Dellinger, former acting Solicitor General of the United States, shares remarks entitled "September 17, 1787: The Debate Begins," addressing the ratification debates and the enduring significance of the Constitution today -- despite the ongoing debates about the meaning of particular phrases. For Populists Everywhere - Tolstoy "What Must Be Done?"

The omitted conclusion: If a bucket leaks there is certainly a hole in it. Looking at the bottom of a bucket it may seem that the water leaks out of several holes, but however much we may stop up these imaginary holes from outside, the water will still leak out. To stop the flow we must find the place where the water. escapes from the bucket and stop it up from inside. The same must be done with measures proposed for stopping the ill-distribution of wealth - for stopping up the holes through which wealth. leaks away from the people. People say: 'organize workers' associations, make capital public property, make the land public property!' All this is only external plugging of the places from which the water seems to leak. To stop the leakage of the workers' wealth into the hands of the leisured classes it is necessary to find from within the hole through which this leakage takes place. This hole is the coercion armed men exert on the unarmed; the violence of troops by means of which the people themselves are taken from their work, and the land and the produce of people's toil taken from the people. As long as there exists a single armed man arrogating to himself the right to kill any other man whatever, so long will the irregular distribution of wealth exist, that is, slavery. In Search of Democracy: Post-Populism and the Pragmatic Leftism in the Andes

At the first Latin American Briefing Series talk of the 2011-2012 academic year "In Search of Democracy: Post-Populism and Pragmatic Leftism in the Andes," Michael Shifter, President of the Inter-American Dialogue discussed two trends found in the Andean region: a political agenda that focuses on social inclusion and a distancing of the region from the US Using Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru, Shifter underscored that political platforms based on social change-ranging from far left to moderate conservative,- have created a populist picture of mixed governance beneficial to the region. Bolivian President Evo Morales, elected in 2005 and then re-elected in 2006, won as the first indigenous president of South America with the popular support of indigenous communities. Recent elections in Colombia in 2010 and Peru in 2011, have seen a change in the guard ushered in by promises of moderate social reforms that focus on social inequalities, corruption and criminality. But although the current political and economic picture of South America is framed by optimism, populist governments in the Andean region could face significant challenges in the coming years. In Colombia, security challenges posed by drug-trafficking, paramilitaries and corruption continue to affect policy-making in the region. In Bolivia, Morales' support declined after he lifted several government food subsidies and considered building a highway through an Amazonian ecological reserve. Both ...
