Coastal pollution fears after Nigeria oil spill
www.euronews.net Those living along Nigeria's coastline said on Monday that officials are not doing enough to clean up last month's deep sea oil spill. Thirteen coastal villages are thought to have been affected by the incident at Shell's Bonga oil field on December 20th. Environmental groups said local beaches have been coated with black sludge and drinking water has been polluted. Shell shut down its oil platform following the spill. The company denied that any of the oil has washed up on the coast.

What is pollution?
In the 14th century, pollution was significant. Spiritual and material exclusively . So, pollute or contaminate would violate what is holy like a man's soul, or moral sensitivity. Can Pollution Make Vaccines Less Effective?
From voaspecialenglish.com | http Some researchers are warning about industrial chemicals called perfluorinated compounds, or PFCs. A new study found that PFCs weakened the effectiveness of vaccines designed to protect children from diseases like polio, measles and diphtheria. The protection is supposed to last a lifetime. PHILLIPE GRANDJEAN: "This was quite serious because we could also see that some of the children were so low in antibody concentrations that they were essentially not protected. So, they had been vaccinated four times and the vaccines had not worked." Dr. Phillipe Grandjean is with the Harvard School of Public Health. He led a study of 500 children who had been vaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus. The study found children who had higher levels of PFCs in their blood had very low levels of antibodies against these infections. PETER HOTEZ: "It was quite a striking effect, one that I would not have anticipated." Dr. Peter Hotez is president of the Sabin Vaccine Institute. Dr. Hotez says that if PFCs do interfere with antibody production, children in poor areas -- areas where PFC levels can be much higher -- will suffer. PETER HOTEZ: "Even a modest reduction in vaccine coverage and vaccine immune responses could lead to subsequent outbreaks of childhood diseases, that there's a risk that we could see recurrences of, of childhood killers such as diphtheria or pertussis or other childhood diseases now become more common in the world's poorest countries ...
The Patent Pollution Problem: Its Causes, Effects and Solutions
Google Tech Talk April 26, 2012 Presented by Daniel B. Ravicher ABSTRACT America's patent system dates back to the founding of our nation when it was expressly included in the Constitution. To be sure, a patent system can provide many great benefits to society. However, patents also pose a great threat to society because the issuance of a patent makes it illegal for any American to do whatever is claimed by the patent. Thus, it is critically important to the success of our patent system that it maintain high patent quality and ensures only deserving patents are issued. Unfortunately, the American patent system today is suffering from extremely low patent quality. Every Tuesday the Patent Office issues 4000 patents after spending on average less than a couple days in reviewing the merits of each patent application. When asked to reconsider the merits of patents it previously issued, the Patent Office concedes that the vast majority of them have questionable validity. When patents end up in court as a result of patent owners suing alleged infringers, a large percentage of the time those asserted patents are found to have been improperly granted. The result is a polluted patent system littered with trash patents that impede technological development. In this Google Tech Talk, Prof. Daniel B. Ravicher of the Public Patent Foundation and Benjamin N. Cardozo School of law will explain why patent quality is so low in America today, describe in detail the ways in which low patent ...
Pacific Pollution Mass 'Roughly the Size of Texas'
Transcript by Newsy: www.youtube.com (Image Credit: The Telegraph) BY CELIA MURRAY Scripps University has published a new study about the state of pollution in the Pacific Ocean -- and it isn't good. Discovery News has the details -- "In the period 1972 to 1987, no microplastic was found in the majority of samples taken for testing...Today, scientists estimate the swirling mass of waste known as...the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is roughly the size of Texas." MSNBC explains how so much garbage ends up in this region. "A vortex of ocean currents swirling from California to Hawaii that permanently traps just about any piece of plastic ever thrown in the water..." As the BBC reports, this is producing bizarre behaviour from some marine species - namely a type of water strider .... "An obvious concern is that this micro-material could be ingested by marine organisms, but the Scripps team has noted another, perhaps unexpected, consequence. The fragments make it easier for the marine insect.... [to] lay its eggs out over the ocean." A column in The Telegraph explains just how bad the pollution in the oceans is. "The United Nations Environment Programme says around 13000 pieces of plastic litter are found in every square kilometre of sea, but the problem is worst in the North Pacific..." According to the Editor of UTC in San Diego, it is developing countries that are the main cause of the pollution, Jim Waters: "A lot of the problem is from developing countries like India and ...
China to open pollution data to public
The Chinese government has stepped up efforts to make data on the country's air quality more transparent, including allowing the public to tour the country's pollution monitoring centre. It is a rare bow to public pressure, as citizens have been complaining of hugely underestimated rates of pollution. Many experts say the government has not taking enough steps to fight the "hazardous" problem, caused mainly by the usage of fossil fuels, which many of China's nearly 1.4 billion residents rely on for energy. Melissa Chan reports from Beijing.

Mexico's underwater caves face pollution risk
The country's incredible cave-like sinkholes, once revered as gateways to the underworld by the Mayans, may be forced to close its passages because of pollution associated with the boomin tourism industry and poor water treatement facilities. Gulf Pollution: It's Not Just the Oil Spill
Complete video at: fora.tv Jeremy Jackson, Professor of Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, explains that the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is one of many environmental degradations already occurring in the region. "The mouth of the Mississippi is the bowl of the toilet of North America," says Jackson. "All of this phosphorus and nitrogen, in incredible, mind-boggling qualities, comes down the river and gets dumped into the Gulf of Mexico. And it makes the dead zone." Photo credit: NASA Goddard Photo and Video ----- In recent years, scientists have recorded dramatic drops in fisheries catches around the world. But what if the declines are even greater than we've realized? Dr. Jackson examines how we know what we think we know about the changing oceans with some of the top names in marine science and history in his new edited volume, Shifting Baselines. He will discuss how skewed visions of the past have led to disastrous marine practices and why historical perspective is critical to re-vitalize fisheries and ecosystems. - California Academy of Sciences Jeremy Jackson is Director of CMBC, the William E. and Mary B. Cancer-causing Cadmium Pollution Found in China's Liujiang River
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me A mining company has polluted a major river in southern China. The deadly chemical contamination threatens millions of people living downstream. Cadmium pollution was detected in the Liujiang River in the Guangxi region last Thursday. Cadmium is a chemical that can cause cancer and damage people's kidneys. It was found more than 10 days after the wastewater from a local mining firm polluted Longjiang, a tributary upstream of the Liujiang River. A water test sample shows the river contains five times more cadmium than the safety standard. The affected areas have been reached 37 miles away from Liuzhou Dam, which sits on the Liujiang River. Local authorities warned residents not to fetch water from the polluted sections of the river. It's affecting more than three million people living nearby who have to rely on bottled water. Although it has been verified the pollution comes from the Guangxi Jinhe Mining Company, it's not clear when it started and the quantity of the discharge. [Huang He, Deputy Head of Environmental Protection Bureau, Hechi City]: "Guangxi Jinhe Mining Co. Ltd. is responsible for the pollution according to our initial investigation. The company had long been storing industrial waste at the foot of the hill, which was then discharged to the Longjiang River through underground water." Local fire authorities put tons of neutralizers, made from ...

China's Pollution Busters - China
Nov 2007 In the past six years, infant birth defects in China have increased by an unprecedented 40%. This rise is being blamed on pollution from factories. Now green campaigners are taking on the multinationals. "The untreated waste is pumped out secretly at night", states activist Wu Deng Ming, pointing at a water outlet leading from a factory into a river. "People living along the river have enlarged livers", claims one local. They suffer from: "loss of appetite or cancer and all sorts of terminal diseases". Although strong laws governing pollution exist, these are regularly flouted. "Some local officials give protection to polluters", claims Ma Jun. In an attempt to put pressure on polluters, campaigners are naming and shaming guilty companies online. "We let people know that this company, with such a popular brand, is violated waste water discharge standards". There are also signs that central government is taking the problem more seriously. "The state is very serious about environmental problems", states official Zhou Linbo. Some factories have been closed down. But strong resistance to change still exists. "Polluting factories hire hooligans to deal with people they believe will damage their reputation", claims Wu Deng Ming. Other companies threaten to relocate to Vietnam or Indonesia where; "we can still discharge more of less freely". Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

UN slams Shell over Nigeria oil pollution
A UN report says it will cost up to $1bn and take 30 years to clean up the damage done by decades of drilling by Shell. Oil exploration in Nigeria's south for several decades has had a debilitating effect on the environment of the region. Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil company, has been accused of serious failures in its handling of the pollution in the Niger Delta and shirking its responsibility. Activists have demanded that Shell's licence be revoked for the environmental disaster. But with 90 per cent of the government's revenue coming from petroleum exports, oil companies seem to have clear political leverage over the issue. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from southern Nigeria.

Studying How Plastic Pollution Enters Ocean Food Supply
From voaspecialenglish.com | http Marcus Eriksen is not really fishing. He is catching plastic in the Atlantic Ocean. Eriksen wants to publicize the growing buildup of plastic waste in our oceans and to study its effects. MARCUS ERIKSEN: "These are five sub-tropical gyres in the world where the majority of the plastic in the world accumulates." ANNA CUMMINS: "The gyre is formed by ocean currents that couple with the spinning of the Earth, the Earth's rotation. And what happens is that you have, effectively, a massive whirlpool, this large spinning system, where debris can accumulate." Anna Cummins and her husband Marcus Eriksen set up a not-for-profit group called the 5 Gyres Institute. It helps researchers with studies of plastic pollution in the oceans. Cummins says plastic bags and bottles have little or no value after they are used. Most plastic waste can be found in solid-waste landfills or along rivers. A lot of this waste also washes out to sea. ANNA CUMMINS: "This becomes a problem in the marine environment because plastics are designed to last forever. They don't break down, they can't be digested by marine organisms and they persist in the ocean for thousands of years." When sailing, Eriksen and Cummins gather objects from the ocean's surface. Hundreds of things they caught have gone to a California laboratory for testing. ANNA CUMMINS: "What shocked me the most on all these trips is to cross an ocean, to cross for thousands and thousands of miles, and find that ...
