Diminished as a 7b9 Chord (Jazz Guitar Lesson JA-029) How to play
In this guitar lesson we look at the jazz theory concept of using a diminished chord as a 7b9 chord. You should probably check out the jazz lesson series on the web site if you are getting stuck with the concepts here - and there are notes about this lesson there too - and I think it is easier to read some of this stuff than listen - helps you understand it faster, imho. It's kind of a chord substitution (you'll often see it called that) but I think it is more just using a shape a different way, it's not really a substitution in the proper sense of the word... more on the web site about that!Taught by Justin Sandercoe. 50 Jazz Guitar Licks You MUST Know - Lick #44: ii-V7 Bop Riffs - Frank Vignola
FULL COURSE, TAB, JAM TRACKS: truefire.at More jazz guitar lessons: bit.ly In this ii-V7 lick we start with a nice melodic statement using an interval jump. Then we follow it up with a scalar pattern that leads into an arpeggio. So, we are utilizing the different techniques we have been learning in other licks. This is a good lick to learn in different keys and positions. It may take a little practice with the slow rhythm track to get this lick under your fingers. The fast tempo is a realistically bright tempo that jazzers play so take the time practice slowly building the speed of your eighth note lines.

GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I wanted to ask you a styles question, (since I mostly just play rock), the question is about Jazz style. This has much to do with my uncle because he keeps saying I should learn to play jazz. Since I am a long-time subscriber to you, & Your explanations are always so clear. I thought that you'd be the best person to describe to me what the heck jazz actually is. Jack -- Toronto, Canada A: I think the reason why your uncle is likely going on at you about studying jazz music is because any study, or even discussion of Jazz will relate quite immediately to the musical process known of as improvisation. Musical improvisation also sometimes called spontaneous composition has not only long been a core element of musical performance, but it's also a core element of Jazz music. Learning jazz, will help you improvise and ultimately play better. Not many people are aware of the fact that musical masters such as; Mozart, Handel, Bach, and Beethoven just to name a few, had extraordinary improvisation ability. They could spontaneously create wild musical passages using; scales, arpeggios and difficult technical challenges not unlike the dazzling display's of modern guitar virtuoso's of today!
