Plasma: The 4th State of Matter

Plasma is widely considered to be the fourth state of matter due to its unique properties. Plasma is a gas in which the atoms are ionized, meaning there are free negatively charged electrons and positively charged ions. This collection of charged particles can be controlled by electromagnetic fields and this allows plasmas to be used as a controllable reactive gas. The electronics industry uses this concept to etch very small patterns into silicon to make our modern day devices smaller and more efficient. This movie was produced by students Bobby Bruce and Michael Sweatt for the A. James Clark School of Engineering's 2008 Vid/Terp competition.

What is plasma?

University of Michigan Professor Alec Gallimore describes the fourth state of matter and explains why it's important.

So this is proof to all non-believers out there that you CAN do this. (Please note, I only put the caution in the video because I don't like seeing anyone getting hurt. You're free to try this yourself because it is a free country. Do I suggest it? No...) (Also, comments are now back on with automatic approval. And honestly, if you don't like the video, don't be an ass. Just close the browser or click back.)

Plasma Rocket

Plasma test shots from the VASIMR VX-100 prototype plasma rocket housed at NASA's Johnson Space Center. The video is slowed down to 1/2 speed. In general, these types of thrusters (ion thrusters, Hall thrusters, and VASIMR) take advantage of extremely high exhaust velocities and generally have the ability to operate continuously for months. Although the thrust is much lower than a chemical rocket, the ultimate speed and/or payload fraction delivered is generally much higher. A new higher power rocket (VX-200) is being constructed and will be tested in a new vacuum chamber that is large enough to drive a full size school bus into (with room to spare). The Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR) is now operated by the Ad Astra Rocket Company, created by former astronaut Dr. Franklin Chang-Diaz (7 Space Shuttle flights). TOP SECRET - PLASMA WEAPON

There are three classic states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas; however, plasma is considered by some scientists to be the fourth state of matter because of its unique properties. Ionized refers to presence of one or more free electrons, which are not bound to an atom or molecule. The free electric charges make the plasma electrically conductive so that it responds strongly to electromagnetic fields. Plasma typically takes the form of neutral gas-like clouds (eg stars) or charged ion beams, but may also include dust and grains (called dusty plasmas).[1] They are typically formed by heating and ionizing a gas, stripping electrons away from atoms, thereby enabling the positive and negative charges to move more freely. The Radio Instrument Building Research Institute under the supervision of Academician A. Avramenko developed a plasma weapon capable of killing any target at altitudes of up to 50 kilometers. Engineers and scientists of the institute in cooperation with the National Research Institute of Experimental Physics (Arzamas-16), Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute, and Central Machine Building Research Institute prepared a concept of the international experiment Doverie (Trust) for testing of the Russian plasma weapon at the American ABM testing ground in the Pacific Ocean together with the US. The cost of the experiment was estimated at $300 million. According to Academician Avramenko, the plasma antimissile weapon would not only cost tens times less than the ...

Home Made $260 plasma cutter

Simple & powerful plasma cutter that you can build at home for under $300! It cuts up to 1/2 inch steel. This is what I made to cut sheets of 316 stainless for building hho cells. It makes cutting stainless like cutting butter. I found that 4x8 foot sheets of 316 cost only $150 so I needed a way to slice them up. Please be aware that there is an error in the schematic at the end which will keep it from working correctly. This video was made in a hurry. I will post some move videos with all the correct info if anyone cares. Engineers told me it was to hard to do and it would take them a year to design a plasma cutter. However, if plasma cutting was invented by accident during world war two then I knew I could do it on purpose. A home made torch head is super cheap, however I choose a replacement torch head because they have better air nozzle control and make a smoother cut; $125 of the price was spent on the "replacement" torch head. I have sold plans in the past, but really this is just to good of a tool to not let everyone know how to build one. So this is my gift to the DIY community.. Please note that in this schematic the inductor and water resistor needs swaping, otherwise it will not work!. The resistor can not be in the torch wire it must be in the work clamp wire.

plasma gasification

Organic molecules (those that are carbon-based) become volatilized, or turn into gases. This synthetic gas (syngas) can be used as a fuel source if properly cleaned. Inorganic compounds melt down and become vitrified, or converted into a hard, glassy substance similar in appearance and weight to obsidian. Metals melt down as well, combining with the rest of the inorganic matter (called slag). Unlike incinerators, which use combustion to break down garbage, there is no burning, or oxidation, in this process. The heat from plasma converters causes pyrolysis, a process in which organic matter breaks down and decomposes. Plasma torches can operate in airtight vessels. Combustion requires oxidization; pyrolysis does not. Plasma waste converters can treat almost any kind of waste, including some traditionally difficult waste materials. It can treat medical waste or chemically-contaminated waste and leave nothing but gases and slag. Because it breaks down these dangerous wastes into their basic elements, they can be disposed of safely. The only waste that a plasma converter can't break down is heavy radioactive material, such as the rods used in a nuclear reactor. If you put such material in a plasma furnace, it would probably catch on fire or even explode.

Instructional: How to Make Plasma in a Microwave

Twitter: @alexjonclement Skip to ≈ 3:50 to see the plasma in action. Preceding is the process for preparing the experiment. Info: A step-by-step, information-filled explanation of the process used to create terrestrial plasma in a microwave. Experiment info: A plasma is an ionized gas. What does that mean? It means that the gas has, by some means, reached its first ionization energy (in this case through 2.4 GHz microwaves). What does that mean? It means that one electron has been removed from the outer energy shell, thus causing the gas to be dissociated (the plasma you see). When the microwaves stop hitting the gas, the compounds return (mostly) to their original configuration. Materials DIsclaimer: If you do this too much, you'll destroy the magnetron in your microwave. Personal Disclaimer: I'm not responsible for you. That said, you should be CAREFUL when you try this. Anyone with a BRAIN can pull it off SAFELY. Follow the instructions! If you're stupid, don't try to replicate this experiment. In fact, if you're just dumb, go away. Now. Please. No, seriously. Why are you still reading this? GO!

Fallout 3 All Unique Weapons - A3-21's Plasma Rifle (plus Wired Reflexes)

www.youtube.com Click here to watch "Dead Space 2: Prologue [Fear with me - part1]" ---------- Unique Plasma Rifle and one of the possible endings for this quest. It does 6 more damage at max energy weapons and condition. It is possessed by Harkness, and can be received by the player character through two of the endings of "The Replicated Man" quest. It can be repaired with normal plasma rifles although it is very durable and will not need to be repaired often. It is very effective and many times a head shot (especially on weaker enemies and with sneak attack) will result in a one shot kill. With both the better criticals perk and the A3-21's Plasma Rifle on 100% repair the player can kill a Deathclaw with a single head-shot. The Player can still get this and the Wired Reflexes perk if he reveals Harkness' identity to himself, keep his secret safe, obtaining the weapon, then ratting him out to Zimmer or for agreeing to kill Zimmer for him (talk to Zimmer before shooting him though to get the perk). Note: By doing this, the player will not receive good or bad Karma. The player gets +200 Karma for talking to Harkness, and -200 Karma for talking to Zimmer, equaling no change in overall Karma. If the player does not reveal Harkness's identity to him it is impossible to achieve the gun otherwise as Harkness is considered "important to the plot" and will fall unconscious if you try to kill him. Pickpocketing this weapon is not possible.
