It's extremely difficult to visualize what is going on with the flow-fields of the weapon blasts during the time of firing. We planned and assembled several different assets including a high speed camera over a few months and then ran a test designed specifically to allow the viewer to observe the gas dynamics in great detail! Needless to say, this was a blast. Well, two blasts if you want to be technical about it (and we usually do). I performed an experiment to see what the differences were between semi-automatic pistols and revolvers. The advantage of shooting under water is that you can see the boundary of the gas flow fields almost perfectly.

The AF2011-A1 Double Barrel Pistol comes actually as the very first industrial double barrel semiautomatic pistol of all times. The original idea came about ten years back to Swiss armourer Vivian Mueller, who at the time experienced cutting and welding together multiple parts of the famous Sig P210: the result was a long slide, double barrel 9mm, highly decorated collector piece, which indeed shot very well. Our idea took the challenge further: to commemorate the legendary Colt 1911-A1 in the Centenary by making a true industrial market-ready double barrel .45 caliber pistol. We achieved success in the brief span of 6 months, after intense and round-the-clock 3D designing, stereolithographic modeling and parts machining. The gun can be handled by any shooter able to shoot with a .45 Acp and it is not only very pleasing, but very accurate and great fun. The AF2011-A1 holds amazing and surprising target performance for the shooter: in fact, it will group all the 8 double .45 caliber rounds (16 bullets) held in the duplex, single columns magazines, in a target of the size of an orange at 15 yards and of a water melon at 25. The stopping power of the AF2011-A1 is tremendous: 2 bullets for a total of 460 Grains weight impacting at 1 to 2 inches apart (depending on the distance of the target) will knock down a bull, while the whole 18 bullets, for a payload exceeding 4000 Grains, can be delivered to the target in about 3 seconds. Elephant Pistol
You may have to watch this recoil twice. Try to follow the gun. The Caliber... 600 Nitro Express. That's right...an elephant gun round in a handgun. The story goes that the guy that built it is some kind of custom gun maker, and built this as an exhibition piece. He takes it to the range with him just to show it off, and the big guy that shot it (in the video) had been bugging the builder to let him shoot it. Now think about this...only until fairly recently (early-mid '80's IIRC) the 600 Nitro Express was hands down the biggest, nastiest, hardest hitting, and heaviest recoiling weapon you could buy. It was designed for one simple purpose...to knock an elephant flat on his butt. Think about this, in the gun world they use what is termed as a "recoil index" to kind of give prospective buyers an idea of what a gun kicks like. A 30-06 gets a rating of a 1.0, which for many people is about the limit of what they can shoot multiple rounds thru comfortably. A 243 is rated at like a .4, a 270 was like a .8, etc. The 600 Nitro Express is rated at a 9.4 times more punishing power than a 30-06. Now watch the video...

The Luger P08 Pistol
The Parabellum-Pistole (Pistol Parabellum), popularly (but incorrectly) known as the Luger, is a toggle locked, recoil operated, semi-automatic pistol. The design was patented by Georg J. Luger in 1898 and produced by German arms manufacturer Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) starting in 1900; it was an evolution of the 1893 Hugo Borchardt designed C-93. The Luger was made popular by its use by Germany during World War I and World War II. Though the Luger pistol was first introduced in 7.65x22mm Parabellum, it is notable for being the pistol for which the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge was developed. --Design-- The Luger uses a toggle-lock action, which utilizes a jointed arm to lock, as opposed to the slide actions of almost every other semi-automatic pistol. After a round is fired, the barrel and toggle assembly (both locked together at this point) travel rearward due to recoil. After moving roughly one-half inch (13 mm) rearward, the toggle strikes a cam built into the frame, causing the knee joint to hinge and the toggle and breech assembly to unlock. At this point the barrel stops its rearward movement (it impacts the frame), but the toggle and breech assembly continue moving (bending the knee joint) due to momentum, extracting the spent casing from the chamber and ejecting it. Ruger SR9 pistol: Gunning for the Glock, Part 1
UPDATE 9/2010: One sample failed reliability tests in my new "Trench Warfare" Handgun Drill. Repeated failures to go into battery. Gun was fresh from box, no cleaning and no lubrication however after cleaning it still continued. Gun was sent to Ruger for repair. PART 1 of 3: I dig the Ruger SR9 pistol. Its another high-value 9mm handgun that seems to give up nothing for its affordable price. My shooting of the SR9 in my Tactical Clinic showed it be a reliable, accurate (even at 100yds!), fast shooting, FUN, and comfortable pistol. When compared against the Nutnfancy standard of 9mm pisitols, the Glock 17, the SR9 does win in the value category but admittedly does come is second in several other categories. But the margins of victory for the Glock 17 against the SR9 are small indeed and with most users, these differences could be negligible. Other uppsides for the SR9 include lightweight carry (27 oz), interchangeable backstrap, well-placed controls, crisp trigger, great sights, sturdiness, good simplicity, high firepower (17 rds!), a chamber indicator (forgot to mention that), and a variety of available finishes. It might be awhile until the accessories market, such as holsters and night sight options, catch up to this Ruger pistol (2008). But the SR9 is selling extremely well and I predict the market will catch up and your accessorizing options will increase. And yes, its too early to tell what kind of track record the Ruger SR9 will establish but I suspect that will be ...

Review and shooting test of the new Ruger SR22 pistol, .22 LR. FN Five-Seven pistol: Long Range Firepower, Part 1
PART 1 of 4: Nutnfancy's table-top review of this excellent FN sidearm. All indicators point to the innovative FN Five-Seven pistol being an outstanding design. It's the companion pistol to the FN PS/P90 carbine and serves many of its special purpose functions. While more of a rifle caliber than a pistol one, it's advantageous to compare the design against a known and respected standard. Against the Glock 17, the 5-7 stacks up very well indeed. Essentially it has the same incredible light weight, equal firepower, good trigger, good sights (adjustable too!), ruggedness, simplicity, reliability, accuracy, ergonomics, and it's quality-built. But it uses the proprietary FN 5.7x28mm round which brings both good and bad news. The good is it provides laser-like trajectories out to 100 yards, Kevlar penetrating capabilities, amazing velocities (1700 fps for commercial loads), less recoil, and higher magazine capacities due to its small size. The bad news is the ammo is hard to find, it's expensive (compared to pistol ammo), current brass doesn't reload well, and few other guns besides FNs use it. While I don't have trigger time behind either of them at this point, my anecdotal study shows the 5.7x28mm to be a decent manstopper (surprisingly). But other downsides of the 57 is its high cost, wide grip, and limited accessories available at this time. Homemade .22 Pistol
This is my homemade .22 pistol that I built myself. It fires Remington .22 blank rounds designed for nail guns, however they work just as well as commercial .22 rounds. The gun is a single shot open bolt design, and was built in a week with $10 worth of spare metal.
