YET ANOTHER EXAPMLE OF THE PROPAGANDA WAR ! A Provisional IRA unit of the South Armagh Brigade shoot down a British Army helicopter near Silverbridge. The attack happened on the 23rd of June 1988. Also included is a news report on the incident - in it the reporter states that this was the first time the IRA shot down a British helicopter - this is incorrect as one had been shot down on the 17th February 1978 near Jonesborough in south Armagh, killing the side-door gunner Iain Corden-Lloyd.

The IRA fire shots over volunteer logue's coffin Gerard Logue (27) an IRA volunteer, was killed after an accidental discharge of a rifle on 21st March 1987. He was on active service at the time. His untimely and unfortunate death was deeply regretted and mourned by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife Eilish and their three sons Gavin, Tomas and Séan, his mother and father, seven brothers and four sisters, and his comrades in the Republican Movement. Gerard, known to many as 'Bogie' was born and grew up in the top of the hill area of Derry city. Throughout his early life, he experienced the type of treatment that is all to familiar to the working class people of Ireland. He applied to join Fianna Eireann in 1978 at the age of 17 but found that it was more or less defunct in his area. So 'Bogie' being someone who got things done, took on the task of rebuilding and reorganising a slua. His initiative and resourcefulness in that instance were characteristics which made his contribution to the Movement all the more vital. By early 1979, Gerard had moved into the IRA but he maintained strong links with the Fianna, advising and assisting them where possible and, as he said himself, learning from them all the time. His keen interest in the development of Derry youth led to his involvement in various other activities outside the Movement. Franco Corelli (1921-2003) was an Italian tenor active in opera from the 1950s to 1976. He was noted for his charismatic stage presence and physical attractiveness as well as his powerful voice. Here he sings 'Di quella pira' from Verdi's Il trovatore. This video is in honor of his 87th birthday, which was precisely 7 days ago. Happy birthday, Maestro Corelli! An interesting story about one of Corelli's 'Trovatore' performances: In a 'Trovatore' production in Naples, Corelli angrily attacked a student in a third-tier box who heckled him during the performance. Outraged, Corelli bounded backstage, ran up three flights of stairs to the box and, finding the door locked, broke it down with his shoulder. In his Manrico costume, complete with sword, Corelli charged at the young man, but was restrained by two ushers. He was so infuriated that he lost his voice for 20 minutes, returning to the stage just in time to sing what he always considered his greatest ever rendition of 'Di quella pira.' -From New York Times Listeners to "Opera Fanatic" on WKCR-FM voted for Favorite Tenor of the Century. 47 singers received a grand total of 600 votes. Corelli barely edged past Björling, winning the poll. The first five places were: First place: Corelli, with 185 votes or 30.8% of the vote 2nd: Björling 177 (29.5%) 3rd: Caruso 69 (11.5%) 4th: Gigli 50 (8.3%); 5th: Vickers 17 (2.8%)

Šaban Bajramović (Serbian Cyrillic: Шабан Бајрамовић) (April 16, 1936 -- June 8, 2008) was a Romani musician from Serbia. He was born in Niš where he attended primary school for only the first four years. On quitting school, he picked up his musical education on the street. When he was 19 he ran away from the army out of love for a girl. As a deserter, he was sentenced to three years prison on the island Goli otok, but as he told the military court they could not hold him for so long as he could survive, they raised his punishment to five and a half years. He survived as he was a good goalkeeper in the prison football team. Because of his nimbleness and speed, they called him "Black Panther". Soon he forced his way into the prison orchestra that played, among other things, jazz (mostly Louis Armstrong, Sinatra, and sometimes John Coltrane) with Spanish and Mexican pieces. After Goli otok, his intensive music career began. He made his first record in 1964. He is believed to have composed 650 compositions. In 2008, it was revealed that Bajramović was living impoverished in Niš with serious health complications and was no longer able to walk. The government of Serbia intervened to provide him with some funds, 10 000 euros. He died in Niš on June 8, 2008, from a heart attack. Seamus McElwain - Revolutionary Freedom Fighter Seamus grew up in Knockcullion, County Monaghan and from a very young age was determined to play his part in the struggle for Irish freedom, at the age of 14 Seamus joined Fianna na hÉireann. At the age of 16 a relative in America offered him the chance to study there but he refused stating that "no one could ever be able to accuse me of running away", it was at this time he joined the ranks of Óglaigh na hÉireann and by the age of 19 was playing a leading role in the Army in Fermanagh. His comrades recall his great leadership qualities and yet he was very unassuming to the point of being shy. In 1981 he was arrested with a group of IRA volunteers in a house near Roslea and was sentenced to life imprisonment, while he was a POW he stood as a candidate in the Monaghan/Cavan constituency receiving 4000 first preference votes and later went on to play a massive role in the 1983 breakout of 38 republican POWS. He was one of the only escapees who had experience in the struggle in the country side it was this in-depth knowledge of the country side which led six of the escapees to freedom. Once Seamus returned back to his homeland he went straight back to the armed struggle and in an IRA Easter message 1985 he stated that those of us who suffered jail and being on the run know that its only a matter of strong organisation that will get the British out. Charles Breslin 20 years, Strabane, Co. Tyrone, an IRA activist, he was shot dead along with Michael Devine (22) and his brother David Devine (17) by undercover British soldiers, on 23 February 1985. The shootings occurred in the early hours of the morning as the three men were returning to an arms dump. The undercover soldiers were aware of the arms dump after being tipped off by an informer. David Devine 17 years, Strabane, Co. Tyrone, an IRA activist, he was shot dead along with his brother Michael Devine (22) and Charles Breslin (20) by undercover British soldiers, on 23 February 1985. The shootings occurred in the early hours of the morning as the three men were returning to an arms dump. The undercover soldiers were aware of the arms dump after being tipped off by an informer. Another recording of Francesco Tamagno. Tamagno sings 'Di Quella Pira' from 'Il Trovatore' for G&T in 1903. This is a Japanese pressing made in early 1930s, using a duplicate master. The side B of this recording is the previous uploaded Caruso's Questa o Quella from 1908. Played on my Numark turntable. Note that Tamagno's voice became much dim than the 1903 pressing.

Luciano Pavarotti - Ah si ben mio... Di quella pira - Live 1975
Luciano Pavarotti in one of his stunning Manrico debut performances. Here we have him singing the aria Ah si ben mio and the stretta Di quella pira from act III of Verdi's Il Trovatore. He sings with a fantastic, liquid legato line in Ah si ben mio. Sutherland is making her debut as Leonora and is in good vocal shape, and though not perfect for the role, shows some beautiful singing in the passage of music separating Pavarotti's big pieces. The Di quella pira is phenomenal, Joan Sutherland later called it 'unforgettable' in an interview. The Cs ring perfectly, better than on his studio recording. He has a tiny problem letting go of the last high C, but that's no big detraction from the splendid singing we get here. The San Francisco Opera orchestra and chorus are conducted by Richard Bonynge, very well too, I might add.
