Well, the same applies to these birds. A lot of my city friends would wrinkle their noses when I mentioned that I sometimes eat feral pigeons. But, that is because they only have the image of their city pigeons, rooting around at the base of dumpsters and garbage cans. These country pigeons grew up eating corn and grain. So, they actually taste pretty good. And if you are lucky enough to get your hands on few young ones, they are downright delicious. I shoot these birds regularly. In part to keep their numbers from swelling out of control, and also to feed my pets and (on occasion) myself. If you bag 10-12 of them, they make for a nice pie. I'll be the first to admit that this earlier video wasn't a display of my best shooting - the gun was new to me, and I had not yet learned to use it to its full potential. Had I known the video would garner the attention it has, I probably would have used more discretion. But, at least I was fully honest. I could have omitted my mistakes - but, that is not how I choose to present myself. So, try not to be too judgmental until you look at my newer videos. This footage was taken on November 4, 2010. A Pigeon Solves the Classic Box-and-Banana Problem
Real laboratory footage showing a pigeon solving Wolfgang Kohler's famous box-and-banana problem, which he studied with chimpanzees in the early 1900s. Dr. Robert Epstein and his colleagues used operant conditioning techniques to get pigeons to solve this problem "spontaneously" in the 1980s. A report of their research was published in the prestigious British journal Nature in 1984 ("Insight" in the pigeon, Nature, 1984, v. 308, pp. 61-62), accessible at DrEpstein.com Depending on their previous experience, pigeons could solve this problem in a human-like fashion in as little as a minute. This pigeon has learned to push boxes and to climb, and it has been rewarded with grain for pecking at a small toy banana. In this situation, the banana is out of reach and the box is not beneath it. At first the pigeon looks confused, then it begins pushing the box - sighting the toy banana as it pushes - and then stops pushing when the box is beneath the banana, then climbs and pecks. This and related studies were summarized in Dr. Epstein's 1996 book, Cognition, Creativity, & Behavior. In this video I attempt to shoot pigeons out of the sky. When you view the video, it seems like it shouldn't be too difficult to pluck them out of mid air, but this is not Nintendo Duck Hunt. The birds are moving very fast, requiring a substantial lead with the shot. They also change direction rapidly. And no matter how "thick" a flock of pigeons looks, there is MUCH more open space than "pigeon space". I realize that many may attempt to use this video to demonize me - calling me a hypocrite for not adhering to the "one shot, one kill" philosophy. I knew that making might haunt me a bit. But, with a semi-auto, I could unload on any animals not killed immediately. This is something I can not do with my single shot. And this is also something that every bird hunter on earth must deal with. I've shot countless ducks and pheasants with a perfectly-placed shotgun blast - yet it still required a 2nd shot to finish them off. It's just the way it is. Anyone who says otherwise is blowing smoke. Had I winged a bird, it would not have suffered long at all considering the rapid-fire accuracy of this gun. And I made certain to not fire on any that were flying over the corn field, so as not to lose them. I'm always torn between making long explanations [like this one] of my actions, or just getting to the footage ...

Rescued King Pigeons Make Great Pets
