Edith Piaf ~ La Vie en Rose / La Vida en Rosa 1955 (Original)

Edith Piaf performing "La Vie en Rose". Édith Piaf, born Édith Giovanna Gassion (19 December 1915 10 October 1963), was a French singer and cultural icon who "is almost universally regarded as France's greatest popular singer." Her singing reflected her life, with her specialty being ballads. Among her songs are "La vie en rose" (1946), "Hymne à l'amour" (1949), "Milord" (1959), "Non, je ne regrette rien" (1960), "l'Accordéoniste" (1941), "Padam...Padam", and "La Foule". "La Vie en rose" (French for "Life through rose-coloured glass," literally "Life in pink") was the signature song of French singer Édith Piaf. Piaf first popularized the song in 1946. The lyrics were written by Piaf and the melody of the song by "Louiguy" (Louis Gugliemi). Initially, Piaf's peers and her songwriting team did not think the song would be successful, but it became a favorite with audiences. An English version of the lyrics was written later by Mack David. Owing to its popularity, the song appeared on most of Piaf's subsequent albums. The song has become a standard and has been performed by many artists. It was given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1998. It has also become a generic song representing the French in foreign countries, as "Rule, Britannia!" and "Stars and Stripes Forever" have for Britain and the US, respectively. La Vie En Rose, a film about her life directed by Olivier Dahan, debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2007. Titled La Môme in France, the film stars Marion ...

Edith PIAF: 'L'Etranger'

Both Damia and Piaf recorded "L'Etranger" in 1936. There was not only difference in age between these two artists, there was difference in experience; Damia had been singing for more than twenty years then, whereas Piaf was making her first steps in the "industry". Damia seems to have gained a distance in her renditions, still dramatic; Edith's experience was troubled youth which enhanced imagination as it often happens with most of great artists at the beginning of their path.

La Vie En Rose Trailer

From the streets of the cutthroat Belleville district of Paris to the dazzling limelight of New York's glamorous concert halls, Edith Piaf's life was a constant battle to sing and survive, to live and love. Raised in abject poverty, surrounded by hookers and pimps, Edith's magical voice made her a star on both sides of the Atlantic. Her passionate romances and friendships with the greatest names of the period -- Yves Montand, Jean Cocteau, Charles Aznavour, Marlene Deitrich, boxing world champion Marcel Cerdan -- made her a household name as much as her memorable live performances and beautiful renditions of songs she made famous internationally, "La Vie en Rose", "Milord", "Hymn to Love", "Non, je ne regrette rien" and many more. But in her audacious attempt to tame her tragic destiny, the "Little Sparrow" -- as she was nicknamed -- flew so high that she could not fail to burn her wings.

Inception Music Comparison

This occurred to me when I came home after seeing the movie, and was listening to Hans ZImmer's score. I'm not saying the cues we hear in the movie are slowed down. Zimmer appears to be using Piaf's song as a foundation for extrapolation. This phenomenon may be obvious to a lot of you out there, but this video serves as a way for people to hear them side by side and to visualize and understand what Zimmer is doing with the score. I think the score is terrific.

Edith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien - (original)

Piaf dedicated her recording of the song to the French Foreign Legion. At the time of the recording, France was engaged in a military conflict, the Algerian War (1954--1962), and the 1st REP (1st Foreign Parachute Regiment) — which backed a temporary putsch of 1961 by the French military against the civilian leadership of Algeria — adopted the song when their resistance was broken. The leadership of the Regiment was arrested and tried but the non-commissioned officers, corporals and Legionnaires were assigned to other Foreign Legion formations. They left the barracks singing the song, which has now become part of the French Foreign Legion heritage and is sung when they are on parade.

Sous le ciel de Paris_Edith Piaf

In 1935 Piaf was discovered in the Pigalle area of Paris by nightclub owner Louis Leplée, whose club Le Gerny off the Champs-Élysées was frequented by the upper and lower classes alike. He persuaded her to sing despite her extreme nervousness, which, combined with her height of only 1.42m (4' 8"), inspired him to give her the nickname that would stay with her for the rest of her life and serve as her stage name, La Môme Piaf (Parigot translatable as "The Waif Sparrow", "The Little Sparrow", or "Kid Sparrow"). Leplée taught her the basics of stage presence and told her to wear a black dress, later to become her trademark apparel. Leplée ran an intense publicity campaign leading up to her opening night, attracting the presence of many celebrities, including actor Maurice Chevalier. Her nightclub gigs led to her first two records produced that same year, with one of them penned by Marguerite Monnot, a collaborator throughout Piaf's life. On 6 April 1936, Leplée was murdered and Piaf was questioned and accused as an accessory, but was acquitted.plée had been killed by mobsters with previous ties to Piaf. Arage of negative media attention now thened her career. To rehabilte her image, she recruited Raymond Asso, with whom she would become romantically involved. He changed her stage name to "Édith Piaf", barred undesirable acquaintances from seeing her, and commissioned Monnot to write songs that reflected or alluded to Piaf's previous life on the streets. In 1940, Édith co ...

Edith Piaf - La Foule (LIVE 1962!!!!)

Famous french singer, Edith Piaf. Live recital at Holland, 1962. La Foule. Considered the best singer the France gave to the world, Edith Piaf was born Edith Giovanna Gassion on December 19, 1915 in Paris, France. She died on either October 10 or October 11, 1963 (one year after this recital) in Cannes, France. Edith Piaf stood at only 4'8". Her musical abilities took her out of the streets and placed at the top of the musical world at the time.
