Philosophy, Logic And Reason

Science & Reason on Facebook: tinyurl.com Stephen Fry @ BigThink: Philosophy, Logic And Reason. --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com --- Interview Transcript Question: What philosophers influenced you? Stephen Fry: Philosophy is an odd thing. When we use the word in everyday speech you know you sometimes hear it hilariously. They say, Oh, its never good to be late. Thats my philosophy. You think thats a generous description of that rather dull precept to call it a philosophy, but its odd how philosophers generally speaking, at least the ones Ive read or the ones I you know value, dont have in that sense a philosophy. There is no particular Socratic or Nietzschean or Kantian way to live your life. They dont offer ethical codes and standards by which to live your life. They dont offer a philosophy to follow. They just simply raise an enormous number of questions mostly, so in the sense that you put the question is there a philosopher thats important to me. Well I me I loved really the sort of the Bertrand Russell grand sort of tour of philosophy, the history of philosophy from the pre Socratics as they're called, Zeno and so on through to Socrates and Plato and Aristotle. I never quite liked Aristotle. I think thats partly... Although he was obviously a genius and brilliant and he invented logic, so whats not to like. I think it was his influence on the medieval mind was probably rather pernicious ...

The Philosophy of Liberty

When you hear Ron Paul say that he stands for the Philosophy of Liberty, this is what he means. The philosophy of liberty is based on self-ownership. This simple but elegant and hard-hitting animation will explain exactly what that means. It's a great tool anyone can use to educate children and adults about our right to life, liberty, and the property we create - and our responsibility to think, speak and act. CFI-NYC | The Science and Philosophy of Free Will

Are advances in the scientific understanding of the human mind shaping our conception of free will? If so, how? Are the cognitive sciences revealing that free will does not exist, or are they merely shedding light on the inner workings of agency? And do the answers to these questions have implications for moral responsibility? On Nov. 6, 2011, the Center for Inquiry-New York City explored these and related questions by presenting a panel discussion featuring: * Hakwan Lau, Columbia University. * Alfred Mele, Florida State University. * Jesse Prinz, City University of New York. * Adina Roskies, Dartmouth College. * Massimo Pigliucci, City University of New York. This event was held at the Auditorium on Broadway. It was the second in our "Science and Philosophy" series. The first event focused on consciousness. For more: www.centerforinquiry.net/nyc

Anthony Kenny on Medieval Philosophy: Section 1

Medieval Philosophy: Thomas Aquinas This program examines the ideas of the medieval philosophic theologians, particularly St. Thomas Aquinas. Logical methods employed by Aquinas are discussed as precursors of the scientific methodology of later philosophers, such as Descartes.

You cannot change the past but you can make the future, and anyone who tells you different is a Fucking lethargic devil. 6. Philosophers and Kings: Plato's Republic, V

Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114) In this last session on the Republic, the emphasis is on the idea of self-control, as put forward by Adeimantus in his speech. Socrates asserts that the most powerful passion one needs to learn how to tame is what he calls thumos. Used to denote "spiritedness" and "desire," it is associated with ambitions for public life that both virtuous statesmen as well as great tyrants may pursue. The lecture ends with the platonic idea of justice as harmony in the city and the soul. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Control of Passions 08:53 - Chapter 2. A Proposal for the Construction of KallipolIs 17:34 - Chapter 3. Justice 26:28 - Chapter 4. The Philosopher-King 33:26 - Chapter 5. What Are Plato's Views on Modern America? Death - The Philosopher

From the album "Individual Thought Patterns" (1993). Lyrics: Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality Do you live my life or share the breath I breathe Lies feed your judgement of others Behold how the blind lead each other The philosopher You know so much about nothing at all [Lead: Chuck] Ideas that fall under shadows of theories that stand tall Thoughts that grow narrow upon being verbally released Your mind is not your own, what sounds more mentally stimulating is how you make your choice So you preach about how I'm supposed to be, yet you don't you know your own sexuality Lies feed your judgement of others Behold how the blind lead each other The philosopher You know so much about nothing at all

The Philosophy of Liberty: Plunder

www.myfreesociety.com In this follow up video to The Philosophy of Liberty Property, we explore Frederic Bastiat's concept of Legal Plunder. Is it ever OK for government to steal your stuff and give it to someone else? Or is government just a glorified organized crime syndicate ala Tony Soprano? Does it really make sense for citizens to plunder each other like competing bands of vikings? This video was produced by The Foundation for a Free Society. Bruce Lee's Philosophy

The knowledge Bruce had. One of his main passions among martial arts was Philosophy. Use his wisdom in your own life. There are still speculations of his cause of death. .. Its too hard to accept that a man of such fitness and strength could die so suddenly..makes you wonder.. He had so much unfinished potential. We should study his work and writings to gain a better understanding of ourselves and the world around. Lets fulfill our potential and carry on where Bruce left off. More quotes in "Bruce Lee's Philosophy continued" and Bruce Lee's Philosophy 3 Song is "Guess who's back by Scarface"

Philosophy

Do you enjoy discussing the pros and cons of broad issues affecting society? Do you relish puzzle-solving? Do you like subjects that emphasise rigorous thought? If so, philosophy might be the right subject for you. Philosophy considers extremely general and 'ultimate' problems, such as the nature of reality, the purpose of human existence, and the basis of knowledge. It also scrutinises the methods that are used to answer such questions. Cambridge is one of the best places to get a grounding in analytic philosophy and our course is one of the few in which it's possible to concentrate entirely on philosophy without taking any other subject (although you can diversify within the subject if you wish). To find out more about Philosophy at Cambridge, see www.study.cam.ac.uk Some of the students who appear in our course films are also featured in the 60 Second Impressions series, which can be found at www.cam.ac.uk - keep checking back as we'll be adding new films every couple of weeks!

Beyond the Fringe on Oxford Philosophy

Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller spoof "Oxford philosophy" in a sketch from the popular West End show they did with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Not exactly hilarious - even for philosophers - but a bit of history, and remarkable that it should make a popular comedy revue.

Iris Murdoch on Philosophy and Literature: Section 1

The areas in which philosophy and literature overlap are examined in this program by renowned Oxford novelist Iris Murdoch. Style and structure in philosophical writing are compared and contrasted with those in literature. The narrative abilities of Plato, Schopenhauer, and Kant are examined. Philosophy's predilection for accepting only literature that supports its theories is discussed as a source of antagonism between the two disciplines.
