Pete Seeger on "The Johnny Cash Show" complete and uncut
Folk music and civil-rights icon Pete Seeger brought his brand of straight-talking this-banjo-kills-fascists* political activism to "The Johnny Cash Show" on March 4, 1970. It's clear from this clip that Cash is the student and Seeger is the master as he and Cash rip through the Grand-Ole-Opry-friendly classic American singalong folk tune "Worried Man Blues." * This has been edited by Mikerickson01 into a much better description: Pete Seeger's banjo surrounds hate and forces it to surrender.

Pete Seeger: Waist Deep in the Big Muddy
Aired on CBS at the height of the Vietnam War, this song holds just as much truth today... It was back in 1941. I was a member of a good platoon. We were on maneuvers in Lou'siana one night By the light of the moon. The Captain told us to ford a river. That's how it all begun. We were knee deep in the Big Muddy, And the big fool said to push on. The Sergeant said, "Sir, are you sure This is the best way back to the base?" "Sergeant, go on, I've forded this river About a mile above this place. It'll be a little soggy, but just keep sloggin'. We'll soon be on dry ground." We were waist deep in the Big Muddy, And the big fool said to push on. The Sergeant said, "Sir, with all this equipment, No man will be able to swim." "Sergeant, don't be a Nervous Nelly," The Captain said to him. "All we need is a little determination. Men, follow me. I'll lead on." We were neck deep in the Big Muddy, And the big fool said to push on. All at once the moon clouded over. We heard a gurglin' cry. A few seconds later the Captain's helmet Was all that floated by. The Sergeant said, "Turn around, men. I'm in charge from now on." And we just made it out of the Big Muddy With the Captain dead and gone. We stripped and dived and found his body Stuck in the old quicksand. I guess he didn't know that the water was deeper Then the place he'd once before been. Another stream had joined the Big Muddy About a half mile from where we'd gone. We were lucky to escape from the Big Muddy When the big fool ...
Pete Seeger: Where Have All the Flowers Gone?
On July 26, 1956, the House of Representatives voted 373 to 9 to cite Pete Seeger and seven others (including playwright Arthur Miller) for contempt, as they failed to cooperate with House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in their attempts to investigate alleged subversives and communists. Pete Seeger testified before the HUAC in 1955. In one of Pete's darkest moments, when his personal freedom, his career, and his safety were in jeopardy, a flash of inspiration ignited this song. The song was stirred by a passage from Mikhail Sholokhov's novel "And Quie Flows the Don". Around the world the song traveled and in 1962 at a UNICEF concert in Germany, Marlene Dietrich, Academy Award-nominated German-born American actress, first performed the song in French, as "Qui peut dire ou vont les fleurs?" Shortly after she sang it in German. The song's impact in Germany just after WWII was shattering. It's universal message, "let there be peace in the world" did not get lost in its translation. To the contrary, the combination of the language, the setting, and the great lyrics has had a profound effect on people all around the world. May it have the same effect today and bring renewed awareness to all that hear it.

On July 23th 2010 Pete Seeger performed live at a Gulf Coast Oil Spill fundraiser at The City Winery in New York City. The audio is a mixture of the microphones on stage and the camera microphone behind the audience. The stage microphones picked up the singing and banjo playing while the camera microphone picked up the audience singing along and clapping. Lyrics: When we look and we can see things are not what they should be God's counting on me, God's counting on you When we look and see things that should not be God's counting on me, God's counting on you Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through, Hopin' we'll all pull through Me and you. It's time to turn things around, trickle up not trickle down God's counting on me, God's counting on you It's time to turn things around, trickle up not trickle down God's counting on me, God's counting on you Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through, Hopin' we'll all pull through Me and you. And when drill, baby, drill turns to spill, baby, spill ...

Banks of Marble - by Pete Seeger
Pete Seeger singing the classic "workers' rights" tune from the 1950's. Lyrics below: BANKS ARE MADE OF MARBLE I've traveled round this country From shore to shining shore. It really made me wonder The things I heard and saw. I saw the weary farmer, Plowing sod and loam; I heard the auction hammer A knocking down his home. CHORUS: But the banks are made of marble, With a guard at every door, And the vaults are stuffed with silver, That the farmer sweated for. I saw the seaman standing Idly by the shore. I heard the bosses saying, Got no work for you no more. But the banks are made of marble, With a guard at every door, And the vaults are stuffed with silver, That the seaman sweated for. I saw the weary miner, Scrubbing coal dust from his back, I heard his children cryin', Got no coal to heat the shack. But the banks are made of marble, With a guard at every door, And the vaults are stuffed with silver, That the miner sweated for. I've seen my brothers working Throughout this mighty land; I prayed we'd get together, And together make a stand. FINAL CHORUS: Then we'd own those banks of marble, With a guard at every door; And we'd share those vaults of silver, That we have sweated for. Words and Music by Les Rice

Talking Union - Pete Seeger
Talking Union by Millard Lampell, Lee Hays and Pete Seeger, 1941 The Almanac Singers, Woodie Guthrie, Lee Hays, Millard Lampell and Pete Seeger Now, if you want higher wages let me tell you what to do You got to talk to the workers in the shop with you. You got to build you a union, got to make it strong, But if you all stick together, boys, it won't be long. You get shorter hours, better working conditions, Vacations with pay. Take your kids to the seashore. It ain't quite this simple, so I better explain Just why you got to ride on the union train. 'Cause if you wait for the boss to raise your pay, We'll all be a-waitin' 'til Judgment Day. We'll all be buried, gone to heaven, St. Peter'll be the straw boss then. Now you know you're underpaid but the boss says you ain't; He speeds up the work 'til you're 'bout to faint. You may be down and out, but you ain't beaten, You can pass out a leaflet and call a meetin'. Talk it over, speak your mind, Decide to do somethin' about it. Course, the boss may persuade some poor damn fool To go to your meetin' and act like a stool. But you can always tell a stool, though, that's a fact, He's got a yaller streak a-runnin' down his back. He doesn't have to stool, he'll always get along On what he takes out of blind men's cups. You got a union now, and you're sittin' pretty, Put some of the boys on the steering committee. The boss won't listen when one guy squawks, But he's got to listen when the union talks. He'd better, be mighty lonely ...
Pete Seeger - The Titanic (Sub)
The Titanic Disaster: It was on one Monday morning just about one o'clock When that great ship Titanic began to reel and rock People began to scream and cry saying, Lord I'm a-goin to die It was sad when that great ship went down. It was sad, it was sad, it was sad when that great ship went down Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives It was sad when that great ship went down. When that ship left England it was making for the shore The rich refused to associate with the poor So they put the poor below; they were the first to go It was sad when that great ship went down. While they were building they said what they would do We will build a ship that the water can't go through But God with power in hand showed the world that it could not stand It was sad when that great ship went down. Those people on that ship were a long ways from home With friends all around they didn't know that the time had come Death came riding by, sixteen hundred had to die It was sad when that great ship went down. While Paul was sailing, his men all around God told him that not a man should drown If you trust in me and obey I will save you all today It was sad when that great ship went down. You know it must have been awful with those people on the sea They say that they were singing "Nearer My God to Thee" While some were homeward bound sixteen hundred had to drown, It was sad when that great ship went down.

PETE SEEGER - Which Side Are You On? (lyrics included)
'Which Side Are You On?' is a song written by Florence Reece in 1931. Reece was the wife of Sam Reece, a union organizer for the United Mine Workers in Harlan County, Kentucky. In 1931, the miners of that region were locked in a bitter and violent struggle with the mine owners. In an attempt to intimidate the Reece family, Sheriff JH Blair and his men (hired by the mining company) illegally entered their family home in search of Sam Reece. Sam had been warned in advance and escaped, but Florence and their children were terrorized in his place. That night, after the men had gone, Florence wrote the lyrics to 'Which Side Are You On?' on a calendar that hung in the kitchen of her home. She took the melody from a traditional Baptist hymn, 'Lay the Lily Low', or the traditional ballad 'Jack Munro'. Reece supported a second wave of miner strikes circa 1973, as recounted in the documentary Harlan County USA. She and others perform "Which Side Are You On?" a number of times throughout. This is Pete Seeger's famous version included in his "Greatest Hits" album released in 1967. Peter "Pete" Seeger (born May 3, 1919) is an American folk singer and was an iconic figure in the mid-20th century American folk music revival. A fixture on nationwide radio in the 1940s, he also had a string of hit records during the early 1950s as a member of The Weavers, most notably their recording of Lead Belly's 'Goodnight, Irene', which topped the charts for 13 weeks in 1950. Members of The Weavers ...

Pete Seeger And The Power Of The Song
In PETE SEEGER: POWER OF SONG, the only authorized biography, Jim Brown documents the life of one of the greatest American singer/songwriters of the last century. Pete Seeger was the architect of the folk revival, writing some of itsÕ best known songs including ÒWhere Have All the Flowers Gone,Ó ÒTurn, Turn, TurnÓ and ÒIf I Had A Hammer.Ó Largely misunderstood by his critics, including the US government, for his views on peace, unionism, civil rights and ecology, Seeger was targeted by the communist witch hunt of the Fifties. He was picketed, protested, blacklisted, and, in spite of his enormous popularity, banned from American television for more than 17 years. With a combination of never-before-seen archival footage and personal films made by Seeger and his wife, PETE SEEGER: POWER OF SONG chronicles the life of this legendary artist and political activist. The film serves as testament of SeegerÕs belief in the power of song above all else and his conviction that individuals can make a difference. Musicians including Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Maines, Tom Paxton and Peter, Paul and Mary appear in this intimate portrait and discuss SeegerÕs lasting influence on the fabric of American music.

Casey Jones - Pete Seeger
Casey Jones - Union Scab (Joe Hill) The Workers on the SP line to strike sent out a call; But Casey Jones, the engineer, he wouldn't strike at all; His boiler it was leaking, and its drivers on the bum, And his engine and its bearings, they were all out of plumb. Casey Jones kept his junk pile running; Casey Jones was working double time; Cagey Jones got a wooden medal, For being good and faithful on the SP line. The workers said to Casey: "Won't you help us win this strike ? " * But Casey said: "Let me alone, you'd better take a hike." Then Casey's wheezy engine ran right off the worn-out track, And Casey hit the river with an awful crack. Casey Jones hit the river bottom; Casey Jones broke his blooming spine; Casey Jones was an Angeleno, He took a trip to heaven on the SP line. When Casey Jones got up to heaven to the Pearly Gate, He said: "I'm Casey Jones, the guy that pulled the SP freight." "You're just the man," said Peter, "our musicians went on strike; You can get a job a-scabbing any time you like." Casey Jones got a job in heaven; Casey Jones was doing mighty fine; Casey Jones went scabbing on the angels, Just like he did to workers on the SP line. They got together and they said it wasn't fair For Casey Jones to go around a-scabbing everywhere. The Angel Union No. 23 they sure were there, And they promptly fired Casey down the Golden Stair. Casey Jones went to Hell a-flying; Casey Jones, the Devil said, "Oh fine; Casey Jones, get busy shoveling sulfur That's ...
