Cheap pesticide, costly harvest: Kids genetically poisoned in India

Cheap, effective and highly toxic Endosulfan pesticide is banned in most countries, but still widely embraced by farmers in India. While the government claims there is no affordable alternative to the chemical, families are paying a high price. Until recently, India was one of the few countries in the world that allowed the use of Endosulfan. The agriculture ministry says there is no other cheap alternative to the powerful pesticide. But finally, after mounting pressure at home and abroad, the Supreme Court voted on an eight-week ban on the pesticide which is set to expire in mid-July. The use of the pesticide has resulted in serious consequences, with a whole generation of children suffering devastating health problems. Dimethoate based pesticides banned

www.ntv.co.ke If you are a fruit and vegetable farmer, you will have to find another pesticide, because the ministry of agriculture has banned the use of Dimethoate on fruits and vegetables. The move follows a European Union directive to reject any imports found to contain un-acceptable levels of dimethoate, due to its health risks. Dimethoate is a chemical found in some pesticides, and is a favourite among Kenyan farmers due to its effectiveness in pest control. Horticulture is Kenya's biggest foreign exchange earner, and if the directive is not complied with, the country could lose over 20 billion shillings of export to the EU.

What is Pesticide Drift?

Growers in Ontario follow integrated pest management programs to protect their crops from insects and disease. Spraying pesticide is often part of that program and the goal is to be safe, efficient and effective. Of course that's easier said than done; typically there's a very small window of time available to apply pesticides, and the weather doesn't always cooperate. Spraying under the wrong conditions, such as on hot or windy days, can cause off-target spray drift. Drift is possible every time the sprayer is turned on. Growers can reduce the impact by understanding the causes of pesticide drift, and making adjustments. To understand how spray drifts, we have to look at droplet behaviour. The forces acting on spray droplets include: Gravity, Evaporation, Wind, Drag and Lift. Gravity pulls the droplet down out of the air. Evaporation makes droplets smaller. Wind will move droplets. Drag will slow droplets. Lift, which is rising air, carries small droplets upward. This end of the spray boom is equipped with nozzles that produce a very coarse droplet size, and this side has nozzles that produce a fine droplet. Those fine droplets act like soap bubbles in the air, and are carried off-target by wind or rising hot air. Using coarser droplets gets more of the spray to the target. You may not see drift, but odds are it's happening. The shorter the distance between nozzle and target, the less impact the forces have on the spray. Don't get too close; nozzles need a minimal ...

Monsanto found guilty of poisoning in pesticide case

www.euronews.net A court in the French city of Lyon has ruled US pesticides maker Monsanto was responsible for the poisoning of a farmer who had used one of their products on his crops. Paul Francois says he suffered neurological problems including memory loss, headaches and stammering after inhaling Monsanto's Lasso weedkiller in 2004. His lawyer, Stephane Teyssier, described the ruling as "historic". "The tribunal has ordered an expert opinion, so we will see what comes of that in relation to compensation."

Pesticides in Agriculture.avi.AVI

This short documentary addresses the issue of pesticide overuse on the island of Samos and around Greece. This has knock on effects in the environment as chameleons and other wildlife enter the fields after spraying and get pesticide poisoning. The chemicals can also leach and run off into aquatic environments -- to which they are extremely harmful. This documentary looks at the difference between chemical and organic farming with interviews from organic practicing farmers on Samos giving arguments for why they use such methods. It also takes a brief look into the manipulation and monopolisation which large agricultural companies bring to farming.

Science Bulletins: Bee Deaths Linked to Common Pesticides

Several recent studies have questioned whether exposure to common pesticides might be impairing bee performance and contributing to the observed population declines. Neonicotinoids are a family of pesticides chemically related to nicotine, and are widely used in both large-scale agriculture as well as in home gardening products. This type of pesticide circulates through flowering plants and collects in nectar and pollen. Recent studies conducted by several research groups have shown that even low doses of neonicotinoid pesticides can impair bees' navigation abilities and reduce the growth of bee colonies. Insects, particularly bees, are the dominant pollinators in temperate regions worldwide. Declines of honey, bumble, and solitary bees may lead to serious repercussions, not only for crop plant production but for the reproductive success of wild flowering plants, as well. Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com On Monday, Greenpeace released a report saying that Lipton tea bags have been found to contain several forbidden pesticides. Last month, the international environmental protection organization randomly bought four Lipton teas and sent to a third party for pesticide testing. These included black tea, green tea, jasmine tea and the Chinese tieguanyin tea. The test found 17 different pesticide residues in all of the samples. Apart from the black tea sample, the other teas all contained what are considered to be highly poisonous pesticides. Lipton is not the only company that has been found to use forbidden pesticides. Previously this month, many famous Chinese tea brands, such as Yutai and Zhang Yiyuan were also found to have products containing banned pesticides. Unilever, which is the parent company of Lipton, issued a statement on Tuesday, reassuring consumers that the company's products are safe and meet Chinese regulations.

Legislative Committee Rejects Outright Ban on Cosmetic Pesticides

www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http A BC government committee reviewing pesticides says it won't call for a ban on the use of cosmetic pesticides. Committee chair and Liberal MLA Bill Bennett says that there is not enough evidence to justify such a ban. The Golf Industry accepts the decision. They were lobbying against the ban of using cosmetic pesticides. Nanaimo Golf Clubs Course Superintendent Garth Sjolie needs his pesticides to get rid of the english daisy on his greens. The white flowers grow in bunches and swallow up the golf balls. He has tried other methods to get rid of the daisies but pesticides work best. BC's top health organizations are disappointed with the decision. The committee has made 17 recommendations, including restricting the sale and use of commercial grade pesticides, strengthening the enforcement of existing regulations, and boosting public education and training on pesticide use. "If these recommendations become law, they will not protect all British Columbian children from being exposed to unnecessary chemicals and possible carcinogens," said Barbara Kaminsky, CEO, Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon. "We waited years for the BC government to follow the lead of other provinces and BC municipalities, and this is the result? DIY MOSQUITO CONTROL pesticide FREE mosquito control Solar Powered Fan West Nile Virus

Using a Maxx Air Flow fan 24", the Orange one from The Home Depot $99 (EXCELLENT FANS) You can clean an area in a few nights breaking an uncontrolled population cycle. This option requires 250 watts of electricity but does not require any pesticides. The screens serve a dual purpose, they also collect dust and fine particulates and eventually form a mat of air junk. The screen provides an easy cleaning option and prevents dire from entering the bearings of the induction motor. The solar option uses a 27 watt blower fan and works great for pigeon and chicken coops, animal kennels and outdoor porches. Place the fans near infested or high traffic areas. KEEP FANS DRY, no rain. Always Unplug when servicing screens or moving. Place the inlet side towards people or animals so you suck the mosquitos away. This also sucks in carbon dioxide creating an attraction trail for the mosquitos to follow sticking them to the back of the fan:-) I have a few more options in the works: WATER COLLECTION NESTS By placing leaves and yard debris in the bottom of a container and filling it with water, the leaves decompose and provide an attractive spot for mosquitos to place their larvae. Once visible, you MUST collect the larvae with a fine fish net and dry them in the sun. This option prevent mosquitos from nesting in ditches and other areas where you cannot stop the cycle. YOU MUST clean daily or you create a mosquito farm. BATS: I have a DIY VIDEO on how to build a bat house and tips on ...

Bee Population Collapse Might Be Due to Common Pesticide

As bee populations decline throughout the world, new research may have found the answer in an old culprit: common pesticides. Two separate European studies have pointed to the use of pesticides known as neonicotinoids as the possible cause of the global collapse of apian colonies. French scientists ran experiments with bees dosed on the bug killer and carrying miniature radio transmitters. Results indicate the insecticide affects the bee's brain, preventing it from returning home—an essential skill for the insect. A separate British study showed the neonicotinoids prevented bumblebees from supplying their hives enough food to produce new queens. Fewer flowers and the insect's vulnerability to pathogens are also contributing factors, say outside experts. And Bayer CropScience, a leading maker of neonicotinoids, claims the studies used dosages that were too high. Authors of the study say the pesticide shouldn't be used on crops that bees interact with until more research is conducted. Alternatives like pyrethroids do exist, but aren't as commonly used. In the meantime, the pesticide industry could suffer a sting—but it might be well deserved.

Health Hazards of Pesticides 1958 CDC

Modern synthetic insecticides, including DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) came into use in the 1940s. DDT was initially used with great effect to combat malaria, typhus, and the other insect-borne human diseases among both military and civilian populations and for insect control in crop and livestock production, institutions, homes, and gardens. Concerns about the harmful effects of these pesticides were voiced in the entomological and other scientific literature well before Rachel Carson's 1962 book Silent Spring sounded an alarm. Among the concerns were for their broad toxicity which killed beneficial insects and that not enough was known about their effects on plants, animals and soils. Some scientist urged caution and more limited use until research was complete on health and environmental effects. For a good review of this debate, read Professional Entomology and the 44 Noisy Years since Silent Spring at extension.entm.purdue.edu . The US Department of Agriculture, the federal agency with responsibility of regulating pesticides before the formation of the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, began regulatory actions in the late 1950s and 1960s to prohibit many of DDT's uses because of mounting evidence of the pesticide's declining benefits and environmental and toxicological effects. Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring in 1962 stimulated widespread public concern over the dangers of improper pesticide use and the need for better pesticide controls. 1972 ...

How to kill ants without pesticides or chemicals!

1 part Palmolive Dishsoap (I recommend the purple anti-bacterial lilac scented kind) and 4 parts water in a spray bottle for application. Kills ants within moments of being sprayed, even if they dry off and wander away. Once sprayed, they're doomed. DOOMED! And the best part is, it works on spiders, flies, fruit flies, silverfish, and just about every other household pest, including fleas and mites on family pets. (When tested, it killed houseflies within seconds of contact, even when sprayed mid-flight) It's non toxic to pets, kids, houseplants, grass - even fruit and veggie gardens. Makes your house smell awesome, doesn't stain fabrics, carpets or couches - and it's long lasting. Meaning spray it, it dries and then leaves an oily film that acts like a barrier to keep other pests out.
