Peru - Land of the Inkas
Heir to ancient cultures and a rich colonial tradition, Perú is a magical spot which involves one of the richest biodiversities of Earth, and is a melting pot of different cultures who together are forging the promise of a better future. Ten thousand years of history are lived through 180 museums and historical places. While Peru inevitably evokes images of Machu Picchu and the Inca empire, the country is also riddled with archaeological sites which are a legacy of even more ancient times, when great civilizations bequeathed a legacy of their art, customs and rituals, their wisdom and skills.Video brought to you by Travelindex Network and Travel & Tourism Foundation. Peru's cocaine industry skyrockets
Peru, one of the world's leading producers and exporters of cocaine, has seen the illicit trade boom in recent years. The industry's growth has prompted the country's government to plan an anti-drug campaign. Some experts blame the authorities for not taking enough action to stop the drug trade, while poor coca farmers say the government's failure to help them economically has forced them to continue in the business. Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman reports from Peru's southern Vrae Valley, the world's densest coca producing region, in the first of a two part special.

Doctors and nurses under Alberto Fujimori's administration, between 1996 and 2000, were assigned monthly quotas and given bonuses based on the number of sterilisations they performed. Al Jazeera's Latin America Editor Lucia Newman reports from Anta on the women's quest for justice.
615 Dead Dolphins on Peru Beaches - April 4, 2012
"Conservationists counted 615 dead dolphins along a 90-mile stretch of beaches in Peru, a wildlife group said Wednesday, and the leading suspect is acoustic testing offshore by oil companies. "If you can count 615 dead dolphins, you can be sure there are a great many more out at sea and the total will reach into the thousands," Hardy Jones, head of the conservation group BlueVoice.org, said in a statement after he and an expert with ORCA Peru walked the beaches. Indeed, the head of a local fishermen's association told Peru21.pe that he estimated more than 3000 dolphins had died so far this year, based on what he saw in the water and on beaches. BlueVoice.org stated that "initial tests ... show evidence of acoustical impact from sonic blasts used in exploration for oil." The ORCA Peru expert, veterinarian Carlos Yaipen Llanos, said that while "we have no definitive evidence," he suspects acoustic testing created a "marine bubble" -- in essence a sonic blast that led to internal bleeding, loss of equilibrium and disorientation. Another possibility is that the dolphins suffered from a disease outbreak, Yaipen Llanos said." worldnews.msnbc.msn.com Persian Gulf HAARP video: www.youtube.com www.google.com

900 dolphins, 5000 birds Dead In Peru 2012
Nearly 900 dolphins and at least 5000 birds, mostly pelicans, have died off Peru's northern coast, the government has confirmed. The country's northern beaches have been declared off-limits as scientists scramble to pin down what has caused such a massive death toll. Non-government organisations blame oil exploration work. But Peru's deputy environment minister Gabriel Quijandria disputed that, saying rising water temperatures, which disturb species' food supplies, were a possible cause. He said although tests conducted on 877 dolphins found dead on the coast had not been completed, contamination from heavy metals or the presence of bacterial infections was not responsible. It is probable the phenomenon "will extend to other coastal areas," Mr Quijandria said, noting there could be a resulting increase in the numbers of birds and other sea life killed. The South American nation's health ministry declared an alert at the weekend, urging the public to stay away from the beaches around Lima and on the northern coast until the cause of the deaths is known. One non-government conservation organisation, known as ORCA, has blamed the dolphin deaths on oil exploration activities in the area, which it claims produces noises which are having an acoustic impact on the mammals. A representative from the group, Carlos Yaipen, said on Wednesday it had tested 30 dead specimens and found broken ears and damaged organs consistent with the victims suffering "the bends", also known as ...

Train Ride from Cusco to Machu Picchu, Peru
Visitors to Machu Picchu in Peru can get there one of two ways - by hiking for either four or seven days, or on a train that can be boarded at either Cusco or Ollantaytambo. I took Peru Rail's Vistadome, which provides large side windows and overhead skylights that give the best possible views of this incredible journey through the Sacred Valley and the cloud forest that is home to the ancient Inca ruins. The video shows the train and the services it provides, including the zig zag tracks that allow it to descend the steep grade into the river valley, where spectacled bears roam the banks and orchids carpet the trees. The price for the 3.5 hour, 57 mile trip was approximately $75 USD each way. To read more about my round-the-world travels, visit my blog, holeinthedonut.com.

The Lost Civilisation Of Peru (BBC)
Two thousand years ago a mysterious and little known civilization ruled the northern coast of Peru. Its people were called the Moche. They built huge and bizarre pyramids that still dominate the surrounding countryside; some well over a hundred feet tall. Many are so heavily eroded they look like natural hills; only close up can you see they are made up of millions of mud bricks. Several of the pyramids, known as 'huacas', meaning sacred site in the local Indian dialect, contain rich collections of murals depicting both secular and sacred scenes from the Moche world. Others house the elaborate tombs of Moche leaders. Out in the desert, archaeologists have also found the 2000-year-old remains of an extensive system of mud brick aqueducts which enabled the Moche to tame their desert environment. Many are still in use today. Indeed there are signs that the Moche irrigated a larger area of land than farmers in Peru do now. But who were the Moche? How did they create such an apparently successful civilisation in the middle of the desert, what kind of a society was it, and why did it disappear? For decades it was one of the greatest archaeological riddles in South America. But now at last, scientists are beginning to come up with answers. Today, after 1500 years, the Moche, and their legacy are beginning to take their place in world history. The story of the Moche is an epic account of society that thought it could control the world and what happened to it when it found it ...
