Performance Incentives and the dynamics of voluntary cooperation
Simon Gachter of the University of Nottingham kicked off our formal seminar series for 2010 with an excellent seminar explaining an experimntal design to evaluate hypotheses about whether explicit perfomance incentives (in the forms of fines or bonuses) would "crowd out" empirically observed incentives for extra , voluntary effort. The short answer is that perfomance incentives do appear to crowd out the extra effort that is voluntarily provided .

Aubrey Daniels: Performance Measurement & Incentive Pay
4th in a series: Richard Warner interviews Aubrey C. Daniels, Ph.D., on his latest book OOPS! 13 Management Practices That Waste Time & Money (and what to do instead)."The modern organization wastes more time and money in the way people are compensated than it wastes in any other area of the business. Salary and hourly pay is pay for showing up, not for performing. Raises are forever. Bonuses are only loosely contingent on performance. Even profit sharing and pay-for-performance plans are poorly designed to create the best performance" (excerpt from OOPS! by Aubrey C. Daniels). Find out why.

What is the Right Long-Term Incentive Plan for Your Company
Developing a long-term incentive plan that will focus employees on long term key performance factors should be an important part of most companies' total rewards investment. The right plan can help engender an ownership mentality on the part of key employees, will help to attract and retain the right kind of people into the organization and ultimately leads to enhanced economic value for both shareholders and participants. The key is to develop a plan that is synchronized with the vision, strategy, roles, expectations and financial parameters of the business. Nvidia GTS 450 Review: GTS 450 vs ATI 5770 vs 5750
Find out how the Nvidia GTS 450 stacks up against the ATI 5770? The GTS 450 is NVIDIA's lowest price Fermi graphics card to-date and is focused directly at at playing games at mainstream resolutions. The GTS 450 is the directx 11 replacement for the GTS 250 and new competitor to ati's 5750 and 5770. With this card Nvidia is attempting to regain market share in the budget gaming segment. According to the reviews on major tech sites such as tweaktown, legit reviews overclockers club and neoseeker the GTS 450 is between the ati 5750 and 5770 in terms of performance. As of today, Newegg and other online retailers have the prices of at $US119 for the ati 5750, $US129 for the GTS 450 and $US139 for the ati 5770. This current price point is appropriate considering the GTS 450 achieves on average a performance level between the two ati cards in this segment. However the 5750 and 5770 have been on the market for nearly one year giving ATI plenty of time to achieve economies of scale and economies of experience in the production process. Given this I believe ATI can afford significant price drops to these cards and will likely to announce a new pricing strategy with further price drops in the next few days. With the GTS 450 we get a compact, low noise, cool running card which often exceeds the performance of the 5750 and on occasion exceeds the 5770. However the ATI competitors have been in market for close to year and the GTS 450 does nothing special by being late to the party ...

Lincoln Case - Part One
Manufacturer Lincoln Electric has long been the subject of case writers because of its heavy use of piece rates, profit sharing, and the tying of reward to performance. In the 1980s, furthermore, economists became interested in the idea that profit sharing as a pay system could reduce cyclical unemployment and layoffs. One version of this concept - called the "share economy" by economist Martin Weitzman - is mentioned in this video and Weitzman is interviewed. That idea renewed interest in Lincoln because of no-layoff policy. This is Part One of a video on Lincoln made in 1992.

Good intentions perverse incentives
The current financial crisis and boring, defensively played football matches may seem to have little in common, but according to Professor Luis Garicano, Centre for Economic Performance at LSE, both can be understood as failures of the same underlying mechanisms. In this video, Professor Garicano uses the theories of organisational economics to describe how people react to incentives -- and how their behaviour can often differ from the intended effect of the incentive. He points out, for example, that the financial system is driven by an incentive structure that encourages and rewards traders for behaviour which is ultimately detrimental to the health of the economy. 'It's clear that bankers were being rewarded for taking excessive risks.' says Professor Garicano. 'The short term nature of their pay - whereby bonuses are accrued over a year - encourages short term, risky decision making. This has to change. Bonuses need to be accrued over longer periods - three or five years. This would mean that if you do something crazy that ends up making you a lot of money this year but, because it is crazy, ends up losing the bank money in five years time, you will not benefit from it.' Professor Garicano goes on to describe how FIFA's attempt to encourage more goal scoring in football matches failed as the result of players responding in unforeseen ways to incentives. Why bother giving awards, incentives, recognition?, John Schaefer, Employee Recognition Expert
www.VocationalShrink.com This is the mantra of the old-school autocratic manager. As much as we know its wrong, you cant really argue with the logic. Its true; you took this job for an agreed-upon wage and theyre paying it, now shut up and get back to work. While the principle is sound, the results are not. This is the formula for an employee base that does just enough to get by, and with strong feelings of resentment along for the ride. In todays economy, you just cant compete and survive by paying full wages and getting partial performance, youll get eaten alive by the competition. The autocratic manager is normally a logic-driven, fairness-based thinker, so heres the most straightforward answer I can give to this question. Employee awards, rewards and incentives pay for themselves and more, if implemented properly and in the right order by managers who believe theyre important. We have clients getting ROI of over 20 to 1 that will attest to it. So, all I can say is give it a try, then reap the benefits of investing in recognition, not as an expense item, but as a profit center!

CLASS Project: Introduction to the Teacher Incentive Fund
An effective teacher has the single greatest influence within the classroom on how well a student learns. The CLASS Project is fundamentally an initiative that puts that research-demonstrated statement into practice. An acronym for Creative Leadership Achieves Student Success, CLASS provides districts with a framework which integrates * expanded career paths, * relevant professional development, * effective performance evaluations * and new compensation models to empower educators and give them the time and tools to constantly strive for excellence for themselves and their students and be recognized and rewarded for doing so. Each district's CLASS Project design looks different because each district has different student and staff needs, but every design strives to strengthen effective teaching and raise student achievement. Seven CLASS districts have now received federal funds through the Teacher Incentive Fund to build on their work and participate in a five-year action research project.
