At first to most people it will seem near impossible to do this, but so did walking and talking once upon a time. Practice it. I believe and put into practice myself that when things go wrong, things that i cannot control, such as other peoples actions, i tell myself... "What is, is!" In other words, I accept the situation, acknowledge that if I change my emotion to something negative nothing will change the situation, and therefore then stop, breathe, and let my inner smile stay strong. Sometimes its harder than other times to do it, lots of things can cause this, lack of sleep, illness, etc etc, but done often, it starts to become a habit, and once embedded into your subconcious, WOW, the change it makes to you. My first car has finally given up on me after 3 years and 60000 miles of being faithful. The head gasket has broken and rather than spending £500 to fix her I've decided to let her go and get myself a new car. It simply means to keep that thing in mind. Do not attach to it, do not generate emotions, because if the "thing" you think of is negative, emotions will only serve to spoil your present moment. Instead, think of the "thing" you cannot let go off, but purposely! and when you hold the picture of that thing, be mindfull of your breath. Notice everything there is about your breath, the temperature of it as it passes over your tongue, the amount of seconds it takes to breathe in, and the same to breathe out, keep your breath in mind, This may take practise, but you will discover that you CAN have a thought of a painful memory, BUT quickly.....become mindful of the breath. and that painful memory starts to lose its pain, and for the first time starts to store itself in the correct way in your brain "without the emotions caused when it actually occured revisiting you" I wish you well, please do let me know how you get on trying this.
