Lick of the Day - Paul Riario - Eric Johnson Inspired Melodic Climb

It's based on a six-note sequence that I transpose to different tonal centers as I move up and across the neck. The first part of the lick, up until the legato ending, is all alternate picked with palm muting. I begin in sixth position, playing the initial six-note sequence based on E, leading off with my middle finger on the E note on the A string's seventh fret. After playing these first six notes, I quickly shift my fret hand up to eighth position and apply that same six-note pattern to the B note on the D string's ninth fret. I then proceed to repeat the E and B sequences an octave higher, moving up the neck and over to the G and B strings, then over to the B and high E. Notice that the physical fretboard shapes are different on the G and B strings because of the way they are tuned to one another--a major third apart--which alters the shapes of intervals played on these strings. For contrast, I end the lick with a smooth legato phrase on the high E string, initiated with a hammer-on, followed by a double pull-off and downward slide, which leads into a "scooped bend," from the D♯ note at the 11th fret up to E, to which I apply some subtle, decorative vibrato. Lick of the Day - Paul Riario -Rock Climb in A

Check out Lick of the Day itunes.apple.com a free download for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch available at the App Store "Like" us on Facebook www.facebook.com This is a climbing legato run that moves across all six strings and up the fretboard, mostly through the A minor pentatonic scale (ACDEG). During the first beat, I add an extra "color tone," the flat-five "blue note" in the key of A, E♭, on the A string's sixth fret. From that point on, it's straight A minor pentatonic. I start out by moving across the bottom four strings in the fifth-position "box" pattern. When I get to the G string, I begin incorporating ascending legato finger slides, first with my ring finger, sliding from the seventh fret up to the ninth. I then cross over to the B string, with my index finger at the eight fret, hammer-on to the 10th fret with my ring finger, and then slide that finger up to the 13th-fret C note. The ascent concludes with a hammer-on and pull-off at the high E string's 10th and 12th frets. I follow this with another pull-off on the B string, and, finally, one last ascending slide, from the G string's 12th fret up to the 14th, which I perform with my ring finger. I end the lick with a nice, smooth vibrato, performed by pulling the G string in toward my palm repeatedly. Regarding the pick hand, I'm only picking the first note on each string and using legato techniques--hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides--to sound the subsequent notes on each string. Lick of the Day: Paul Riario - James Taylor Style Fingerpicking

I'm using my thumb to pick the bass notes on the D, A and low E strings and my fingers to pick the notes on the top three strings, mostly the index and middle. What I'm basically doing here is holding down a different chord shape in each bar, picking out the notes individually and adding decorative melodic embellishments, using hammer-ons and pull-offs. The goal is to allow all the notes in each bar to ring together. Notice that I hold the last chord in bar 3 and let it ring into bar 4. When performing the double-stop hammer-ons and pull-ups within the D chord in bars 4, 9 and 10, make sure the notes on the G and high E strings move together in lock-step fashion. The tempo is 110 beats per minute, 95 for slow practice.

It had a distinct sound and was popularized by Jimi Hendrix in the solo of the song "Purple Haze." In this bluesy, straight-up minor pentatonic, Kenny Wayne Shepherd-esque lick, I emulate the sound of the Octavia by employing pinch harmonics throughout. The key, though, is to execute the pinch harmonics in such a way that they don't completely overtake the fundamental (the original pitch), but rather so that you can hear the fundamental and the harmonic simultaneously. The tempo is 145 beats per minute, 81 for slow practice.
