Hair loss is an issue which affects many men and women throughout their lifetime. Androgenic alopecia refers to both male and female pattern baldness. Hair loss is a traumatic event for many people, and hair loss causes many to lose self confidence as well as a lack of self esteem. Hair loss is a natural part of the aging process, and as people get older their hair tends to fall out. A recent study in central Victoria, Australia showed that pattern baldness was prevalent in 57% of women and 73.5% of men aged 80 and over. Men and women seem to suffer their hair loss in different patterns. Men follow a widening pattern of hair loss that begins and is localized in one area of the scalp. Commonly men will suffer from a receding pattern in the front where their forehead moves further towards the top of their head, or it works in a large "spot" at the back of the scalp which expands into a larger and larger area. . Women lose their hair in a different manner; their thinning becomes noticeable throughout the entire scalp and is not concentrated in one area. Research shows that almost 1 out of every 4 women will suffer noticeable hair loss during their lifetime.
