ABB Robotics - Packaging Assembly
Vivabox is one of packaging producer BDMO's largest product lines at its factory in Meulebeke, a town in the Flanders, Belgium. When they needed a solution to their automated packaging assembly needs BDMO requested offers from ABB System Integrator Viscon. Viscon's winning offer proposed a 'pick-and-place' system that could handle 1200 trays an hour. A tight fit problem was resolved by using the 6-axis functionality of ABB's IRB 120 robot; it inserts the tray at an angle before pushing it firmly down to the base and onto spots of glue. The resulting solution now runs 16 hours a day in two shifts. Needless to say, the cost savings have been significant. Looking ahead, BDMO will use robots to automate other production processes; for example, inserting one finished box inside another in order to reduce shipping costs.

Too much packaging in Japan
This is just one isolated example, but I could give you many more. I think people that live/have lived in Japan can back me up in the comments section - what is an example of packaging overkill you've experienced in Japan? Some times it can be quite nice, as when you're buying a gift for someone and they wrap it up for you and give you a bag you can give it to that person in, but most times it just seems really wasteful. How about where you're from - does this happen? The ironic followup is that in many other ways Japan really tries hard to be eco-friendly. But they just can't give up their love of over-packaging. You can throw them away in your recycle bin, you can put them in a landfill, they can be ground up to be used as filler for other types of products, and more. Stand up pouches are not biodegradable. We use several layers of barrier film which will not biodegrade if exposed to sunlight or air. Boxes, jars, bins, and the like do not biodegrade either. Nothing biodegrades when put in a landfill because the items are buried. When something is buried it simply cannot biodegrade due to lack of oxygen and sunlight. Reduce, reuse, recycle. These are three ways to help our environment by and large. If you're using a bin or something else with high gauge plastic, switching to thin stand up bags will help lower your impact on the environment. Rosemarie Downey, packaging research manager at Euromonitor International, states that while about 98% of all beer was sold in either a glass bottle or metal beverage can in 2011, aluminum bottles are starting to drive value sales, especially in developed markets. We prefer our products to be unwrapped, they love being naked. When we do decide to wrap them up we want to know that our packaging is having as little effect on the planet as possible. So not only do we insist on 100% recycled plastic in our pots and bottles, but we have also worked hard on a facility to help you to bring back your used pots to be made into pots once again. It's as simple as scrubbing them clean and popping them to your local store where they are whisked back to the factory at Poole. Once there our supplier helpfully grinds them up and makes them into brand new pots again, it doesn't get much more closed loop than that.

How DNA is Packaged (Advanced)
Each chromosome consists of one continuous thread-like molecule of DNA coiled tightly around proteins, and contains a portion of the 6400000000 basepairs (DNA building blocks) that make up your DNA. Originally created for DNA Interactive ( www.dnai.org ). TRANSCRIPT In this animation we'll see the remarkable way our DNA is tightly packed up to fit into the nucleus of every cell. The process starts with assembly of a nucleosome, which is formed when eight separate histone protein subunits attach to the DNA molecule. The combined tight loop of DNA and protein is the nucleosome. Six nucleosomes are coiled together and these then stack on top of each other. The end result is a fiber of packed nucleosomes known as chromatin. This structure, is then looped and further packaged using other proteins (which are not shown here) to give the final "chromosomal" shapes. It is this remarkable multiple folding which allows six feet of DNA to fit into the nucleus of each cell in our body. And a typical cell nucleus is so small that ten thousand could fit on the tip of a needle. It is important to realize that chromosomes are not always present, they form only when cells are dividing. At other times, as we can see here at the end of cell division, our DNA becomes less highly organized.)
