In 1923, steam locomotives, the height of modern technology, were fast and exciting. Although airplanes were newer, and automobiles and roads were quickly improving, steam was still the prime mover of high-speed transport. The excitement of seeing a huge working locomotive flash by spewing steam, smoke and cinders is hard to describe. Their eerie whistles were at once frightening and exhilarating. Trains were a symbol of technology improving people's lives, of the hope for an exciting new future. This is especially poignant so soon after World War I, where technology was used to create previously unimagined horrors. The Music: The 1923 Mouvement Symphonique "Pacific 231" of Arthur Honegger is the driving force behind this video. The video's visual elements are collected from many sources, and are added to the music so that those who've never experienced the sheer power and awesome speed of steam might have some notion of what the composer saw.

Attack in the Pacific
There are over 10000 islands within the Pacific Ocean located between Asia and America, the vast majority of which possess little geopolitical importance in periods of peace but, during the Second World War, a good many of these outposts suffered through the dismal experience of armed conflict between two widely separated nations: Japan and the United States. This dramatic documentary, an Armed Forces Information Film, completed a year before the war's end, is dedicated to the men of the United States Navy, a fighting organization which fulfilled a most significant role in bringing about the defeat of Japan; the combat footage, although propagandistic, is startling. Following a valuable introduction describing the variegated Pacific islands and their denizens, effective use is made of film and graphics to describe the spread of Japanese military power from its base south to Australia, including the attack at Pearl Harbor, and provides excellent coverage of the methods used by members of the Allies, particularly the US, to prepare for counterattacks against Japan, bloodily advancing from island to island. Top-flight editing marks this work wherein all scenes are filmed by combat photographers, and although largely devoted to Naval/Marine achievements, the contributions of both the American Army and Army Air Force are highlighted as well, and scenes of the Jimmy Doolittle led bombing attack of Tokyo are particularly memorable.

Giant Pacific Octopus Hatch Sept 2010
Select 720p for HD! A giant pacific octopus mother who lived just across from downtown Seattle had her hatch right under the noses of local divers. Her den was sequestered in Cove Two in West Seattle, in a location that spared her from predators and over-visitation by humans. On September 4 (aka early, early on September 5), 2010, the eggs began hatching. It's a time of mixed emotion; joy at the hatch, and sadness at the knowledge that this event means the mother's life will end. The hatch lasted a full week, after which the mother died. Spoiler alert: Best footage comes starting at 3:24. Enjoy!

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch stretches from the coast of California to Japan, and it's estimated to be twice the size of Texas. Years of bottles, bags, toys, packaging and plastic trash from all corners of the Earth are swirling in a plastic whirlpool in the North Pacific. Discarded water bottles from Iowa, takeout containers from New York City, flip-flops from California and plastic debris from the world over make their way from land into storm drains, streams, rivers and other waterways. They are carried out sea, where they get trapped in swirling ocean currents - forming a giant, floating trash dump of an enormous proportion - no matter how you quantify it. It saddens me to have watched these videos and to find out "WE" have known about this for TEN YEARS and seem to be doing nothing! This Plastic Garbage Dump that is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean collecting all the plastic debris and litter from the world is getting bigger every year. It's now so big that it seems that it's too much for us to clean up, and scientists say that the ocean is cleansing itself little by little, evidenced by the plastics on our beaches, but if we continue to litter and not recycle our plastics it will only get worse. World War II SUBSCRIBE TO EXCELLENT WORLD WAR II VIDEOS Guam was the southern-most major island of the Marianas, 150 miles south of Saipan. Major General Roy Geiger of the III Amphibious Corps commanded the Guam operation, originally scheduled for June 1944, but delayed by the unexpected difficulty capturing Saipan. The delay gave time for more preparation bombardment and better intelligence on Guam. Naval air strikes began on 5 July. From then to 21 July planes from the Fast Carrier Task Force bombed and strafed Guam daily followed by intense shelling of coastal installations and bivouac areas immediately before the landings. At 0830 on 21 July 1944, 3d Marine Division hit the Asan beach while 1st Provisional Marine Brigade came ashore at Agat, seven miles apart, north and south of the main Japanese positions, harbor and airstrip on Orote Peninsula on the west side of Guam. Progress against the well-entrenched, hard-fighting Japanese defenders of the beachhead was delayed by many factors including difficult terrain, high humidity, frequent rain showers, and difficulties landing reinforcements and equipment. As on Saipan, the Japanese fired on the invading Marines from well prepared positions located in caves and tunnels as well as pillboxes situated on the beaches, cliffs, and hillsides overlooking the invasion beaches. Japanese counterattacks with infantry and tanks were repulsed by Marines on the main defensive line, with tank, carrier-plane, and naval fire support ...
