Overfishing and more: SEA THE TRUTH -- In 2048 The Oceans Will Be Empty! (16:9, full-length, HiQ)

www.SeaTheTruth.nl or www.GlobeTransformer.org (NOTE for the YouTube-Team we have uploaded this movie with the permission of the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation) BACKGROUND Sea the Truth is based on numerous scientific publications that examine the problems of seas and oceans. Below follows an overview of the themes addressed in the film and a brief explanation. DEEP TROUBLE: WHALE MORTALITY CAUSED BY OVERFISHING According to a report of the New Zealand news channel 3News sea mammals, among which whales, are dying of malnutrition. The makers claim that this is caused by overfishing. Watch the report here: www.3news.co.nz FISHING POLICY AND QUOTA Fishing policy around the world is destructive. Recommendations from scientists on quotas are ignored by policy makers, wealthy countries plunder the fishing territories of poor countries and bottom trawlers sow destruction all over the seafloor with their dragnets. In Europe, 88% of fish stocks have been overharvested, such as the blue fin tuna which sadly is threatened with extinction. EFFECTS OF FISHING ON MARINE ECOSYSTEMS In addition to the effect on the fish stocks, fishing also affects all other organisms in the same habitat or ecosystem. Whether the fish being harvested are predatory or prey, the balance of the ecosystem is disrupted and this can have serious consequences. The degree of disruption strongly depends on the fishing method employed. BYCATCH The term bycatch has come to be used to refer to fish caught ...

STOP OVERFISHING!

Overfishing is when you take more fish than necessary from the ocean. Overfishing leads to the endangerment of certain fish species, change in the food chain of marine animals, economis losses and if it continues, overfishing could lead to the extinction of fishes, thus losing an important food source.

Oceans Overfishing - The Point with no Return (D7V5)

According to the United Nations, world population has reach 7 Billion on October, 31 2011. The US Census Bureau made a lower estimate, for which the 7 billion mark was reached on March 12, 2012. The biggest single threat to marine ecosystems is overfishing. Our appetite for sea food is exceeding the oceans capacity to renew. With so many fishery and so good technology, the fish don't stand a chance. Fishery is going to collapse. How about life? However there are solutions. International agreements, control & enforcement. We got to be clever. As well we need to change a little. Hope you like the song. Listen loud. The Oceans (and myself) will thank you. Enjoy it. D7V5.

Over Fishing - USA

Oct 2003 Alaska's rich waters are famous for their plentiful supply of fish. But now overfishing is threatening to destroy this precious ecosystem. The Gulf of Alaska is home to the magnificent Stellar Sea Lion -- a mammal who for centuries has lived from this 'sea of plenty'. But as over-fishing has spiralled out of control, the sea lions can no longer find food. The decline of the Stellar Sea Lion has prompted the introduction of tougher fishing regulations in an attempt to halt a worldwide crisis. However local fisheries have been angered by the move which threatens their livelihood. Environmentalists see things differently. "The fishermen will put themselves out of business if they continue," alleges Ken Stump "if we remove fewer fish now then we will have more for the indefinite future." To make matters worse, fishermen who have spent years carefully controlling certain species such as wild salmon are finding themselves ousted from the market with the introduction of cheaper 'farmed' fish. They are struggling to keep afloat "We are trying to live through this. We will not be giving up."

Over Fishing Effects the Reef

The Chicken is a direct descendant of the great and feared Tyrannosaurus-Rex. Why is this relevant? Well I've brought up to believe you do something bad, Karma will get you. Sooner or later. You don't see the Great, Mighty Feared Chicken running around ruling the town like he used to, do you? If Mr. T-Rex ate a few dinosaurs, did a few bad things and he turn into the Battery Chicken. Imagine what we might be later on in Evolution? That is if we don't destroy the planet before. The Great Barrier Reef, Thousands visit it every year, It's one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. We live next to it, it been feeding Families for thousands of years, it's been around for millions. Are we really going to let our stupid human race destroy it, or are we going to kick our asses into gear, and go do something. As Ghandi once said, Be The Change You Wish To See. This is a major problem and the first part to our small Video Serries. (Just two videos dont get excited). Please like and/or comment, It helps.

Overfishing and COOL

The effects of commercial fishing on the world's fish populations has been largely ignored as an issue up to now. It not only impacts the biomass of the caught fish, but indirectly effects nearly every aspect of the saltwater ecosystem. Much of the problem lies in the difficult nature of policing the fishermen in international waters, but demand for the most effected fish is the obvious driving force of their actions. Countries like Japan, Portugal, and other historically seabound nations are huge fish consumers, and many nations, like Greenland and Iceland, are dependent on their seafood exports to sustain their economies. Fish is also an important part of the diet of those in developing nations. Reasons like these make it difficult to address the issue, yet also extremely important that we do so.

MaximsNewsNetwork: TUNISIA: OVERFISHING and FISH STOCKS (UNTV)

MaximsNewsNetwork: 12 June 2010 - UNTV: In Tunisia, fishing villages are on the brink of collapse, but local fishermen have some innovative solutions. Marine pollution is a key factor in the fisheries decline. Longer and more frequent droughts together with declining fisheries have forced many islanders to abandon their homes and migrate to the mainland in search of a better life. In 2009, Tunisia passed a new regulation limiting fishing in the marine protected areas. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hassen Ben Mansour, Fisherman: "Charfia is a traditional way of fishing, and it's the best way because it doesn't harm the sea." "Charfia is going to vanish. There is not enough fish to allow us to make a living." "In 1986, I used to bring from the charfia 150 to 200 kilos, even 300 kilos per day. But today we got only two and a half to three kilos." "The big boats came, and they took every fish with them. Everyone is acting violently towards the sea." "When the water gets hot, the fish move away and go to deeper waters." SOUNDBITE (French) Hamadi Trabelsi, Meteorologist for the Global Environment Facility's Small Grants Programme: "According to the measurement of the Institute of Science and Technology of the Sea, the temperature of sea water in the Gulf of Gabes, including Kerkennah, has risen one degree." "In Kerkennah, you will see palm trees and other trees dying because of sea water intrusion." SOUNDBITE (French) Najib Mallek, President of the Environmental Commission of the local ...

Bluefin Tuna Endangered by Overfishing

Predatory fish are at the top of the ocean food chain. They help keep the balance of marine life in check. Without their eating habits, an overabundance of smaller organisms might affect the entire underwater ecosystem. Some scientists say such a shift could lead to a total collapse of the oceans. Yet so far, those in charge of regulating international fisheries have done little to protect at least one endangered species. VOA's Arash Arabasadi reports.

Experts are meeting in Mexico to discuss ways of protecting tuna stocks, as environmentalists warn that some species could be extinct in just three years. Tony Birtley reports from the western Pacific island of Guam to see how the local fishing industry is being hit hard.

Kutterfisch - Fighting Overfishing, Promoting Sustainability | Made in Germany

The Cuxhaven fishing company Kutterfisch pursues an alternative business model which helps preserve fish stocks. They've dispensed with quotas and use wider-meshed nets than other fishermen. They're now having this business model patented. The worldwide fishing industry is made up of some 3.5 million boats and 200 million fishermen. But whether it's cod and mackerel from the North Sea or Baltic, or tuna from the Atlantic, fish stocks have dwindled by 80 percent in the last 15 years.
