City of New Orleans is a folk song written by Steve Goodman, describing a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans via the Illinois Central Railroad in bittersweet and nostalgic terms. Goodman got the idea while traveling on the eponymous train for a visit to his wife's family. He performed the song for Arlo Guthrie in the Quiet Knight, a bar in Chicago, and Guthrie agreed to add it to his repertoire. The song was a hit for Guthrie on his 1972 album Hobo's Lullaby, and is now more closely associated with him, although Goodman performed it until his death in 1984. The song has also been covered by Willie Nelson, John Denver, Johnny Cash, Judy Collins, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Hank Snow, and others. New Orleans: Preservation Hall - Keeping the history of jazz alive
Science has yet to invent a time machine, but walk into 726 St. Peter St. in New Orleans' French Quarter any night of the week and you may feel like you've stumbled into one anyway. Since the early 1960s, Preservation Hall has served as a haven for musicians familiar with traditional New Orleans jazz. As the clip above suggests, it's a cant-miss stop for any visitor to New Orleans, and not just for historical value. The Jaffee family—first founders Allan and Sandra and now their son Ben—set out to provide a venue for veteran players. They succeeded and then some: Preservation Hall has played a key role in passing traditional sounds from one generation to the next. In the second season of Treme, Delmont Lambreaux, the New Orleans-born jazz trumpeter played by Rob Brown, gets in an argument with some New York players who look down their nose at Preservation Hall as an artifact of another time that appeals only to tourists. They'd clearly never been there. Though grounded in past forms, the playing at Preservation Hall remains vital and spirited. It's hard to sound stodgy when you're playing music that depends on improvisation. Heard live, it doesn't sound the least bit old fashioned, and since traditional jazz's influence has seeped into virtually every musical style that emerged in New Orleans since its heyday, it doesn't sound the least bit distant.

In which Hank walks around the French Quarter and discusses the freaking sweet internet blackout that resulted in a great number of congresspeople dropping their support for SOPA and PIPA. The internet is coming into its own as a powerful political force, and just in time to face serious threats. Note: All buskers in this video received at least a $5 tip. Posting a video of a busker is a really interesting intellectual property discussion, actually. If I were to take 20 videos of that one man band and create a YouTube channel all about him and then make a bunch of money off of it and not give him any, that would clearly be wrong, but it would not (as far as I can tell) be illegal. He's performing in a public space and I am thus allowed to record him. It's another example of the rule "don't be a dick" being far more important than any law congress can pass on copyright reform. We are entering a brave new world here, thank you for standing up for the internet, helping to defeat SOPA and PIPA, and thinking deeply about these issues.

A fun-filled metropolis at the mouth of the Mississippi, New Orleans is a cultural melting pot and the birth place of jazz. In 1682, the Frenchman Robert Cavalier, declared this Mississippi region to be French territory and named it 'La Louisiana'. However, Napoleon later accepted $15 million from President Jefferson and in 1840, it was the fourth largest city in the USA The Garden District is a sought-after residential area in which there is an abundance of magnolia trees, palms, shrubs and flowers. The city's largest graveyard, the Metairie Cemetery, has over 7000 graves and an array of spectacular mausoleums which astound the eye. Gumbo Soup, Jambalaya, Hurricane Cocktails and Dixie Beer are just a few of the traditional refreshments on offer in this carefree, non-stop city. Just outside the city, there are the swampy bayous alive with many exotic species. The Oak Valley Plantations, whose great wealth derived from the sugar cane industry prior to the American Civil War, part of which is reminiscent of some of the scenery from Hollywood's Gone With The Wind. In the 19th Century, New Orleans was North American capital of the Voodoo cult and today, it is a city of unique atmospheres, flavors, contrasts and Mardi Gras, an extraordinary city!
