Just like people. It's a very important demand for people. And it seems the same important for orcas. Luna left alone, he was boring, and started to contact with people. It's interesting how they understand that people (and maybe some other animals, like dogs) are the same intelligent beings. Amazing is that even little orca-kids understand and distinguish people from other beings. Maybe did Luna learned something from his family, adult orcas? Maybe do they have a sort of lessons like in a school where adult orcas teach the kids not only rules of survival and hunting, but some basic knowledge about the world in general? For example, maybe they teach their kids that people are intelligent beings like orca and it's not good to attack people and consider them as prey. Orca Attack Seal with Waves
In January 2006 while visiting Antarctica, we witnessed a most unusual method for orca to dislodge a crabeater seal from an ice floe - they made large waves to wash the seal off the relative safety of the ice. Later the orca put the seal back on the ice and dislodged the seal a second time which suggested strongly they were training their young.

This segment was recorded by Nola Kundu just after the first pass of the A-24s under our kayak, near Hanson Island, Johnston Strait, BC, in 2010. This is a 'superpod' gathering of the A-5s and the A-4s (A-24 matriline), including the relocated orphan orca whale 'Springer' - excellent footage of a large contingent of orca whales.

Orca Whale type C w/ twins Ross Sea Antarctica
The name transient originated from the belief that these Killer Whales were outcasts from larger resident pods. Researchers later discovered that transients are not born into resident pods or vice-versa. The evolutionary split between the two groups is believed to have begun two million years ago. Recent genetic research has found that the types have not interbred for up to 10000 years. Three Killer Whale types have recently been documented in the Antarctic. Type A looks like a "typical" Killer Whale, living in open water and feeding mostly on Minke Whales. Type B is smaller than Type A. It has a large white eyepatch and a patch of grey colouring on its back, called a "dorsal cape". It feeds mostly on seals. Type C is the smallest type and lives in larger groups than any other type of Killer Whale. Its eyepatch is distinctively slanted forwards, rather than parallel to the body axis. Like Type B, it has a dorsal cape. Its only prey observed so far is the Antarctic Cod. Type B and C Killer Whales live close to the Antarctic ice pack, and diatoms in these waters may be responsible for the yellowish colouring of both types. Research is ongoing whether Type B and C Killer Whales are different species.

Jean-Michel Cousteau's Statement on Captive Orcas & the Trainer Killed at Sea World
Jean-Michel Cousteau comments on the tragedy on February 24th, 2010, when trainer Dawn Brancheau was dragged into the water and killed by Tilikum, an orca at Sea World's Orlando park. This is the third death associated with Tilikum while in captivity. The tragic death of the trainer suggests that maybe we have outgrown the need to keep such wild, enormous, complex, intelligent and free-ranging animals in captivity, where their behavior is not only unnatural, it can become pathological.

Albino orcas are believed to have weak immune systems, which makes the sighting of what appears to be a 16-year-old adult so unique. The killer whale, nicknamed "Iceberg," has been swimming with a family hunting pod in Russia's largest marine life preserve, which has been threatened by oil speculation.
