On 12th April 2011 it will be 50 years to the day since Yuri Gagarin climbed into his space ship and was launched into space. It took him just 108 minutes to orbit Earth and he returned as the World's very first space man. To mark this historic flight we have teamed up with the astronauts on board the International Space Station to film a new view of what Yuri would have seen as he travelled around the planet. Weaving these new views together with historic voice recordings from Yuri's flight and an original score by composer Philip Sheppard, we have created a spellbinding film to share with people around the World on this historic anniversary. We didn't want to cut out the chorus of cheering after the SpaceX crew realized that they had just made history! While Scaled Composites did reach space twice and thus winning the Ansari X PRIZE, they did not actually reach orbit. Launched in 2007, NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft have now successfully completed their 2 year mission to determine the cause of geomagnetic substorms. Because they are continuing to work perfectly, NASA is re-directing the outermost two spacecraft to special orbits at and around the Moon. This new mission, which is called ARTEMIS, uses some very complex maneuvers over two years (2009-2010) to get both spacecraft into position. As the Moon orbits the Earth, it passes in and out of the Earth's magnetic field and the million-mile per hour stream of particles emitted by the Sun known as the solar wind. While in these regions, the two ARTEMIS spacecraft will seek evidence for turbulence, particle acceleration, and magnetic reconnection, three fundamental phenomena that control the nature of the solar wind's interaction with the Earth's magnetosphere. Employing their full complement of instruments and unique two-point vantage points, the spacecraft will study the vacuum the Moon carves out in the solar wind, and the processes that eventually fill this lunar wake. Nearer the Moon, they will observe the effects of surface electric fields, ions sputtered off the lunar surface, and determine the internal structure of the Moon from transient variations in its magnetic field induced by external changes. The first shot reaches only a modest height but others go up to 500 feet in the air and land no more than 30 feet from the launcher. The anvil launcher is a Navy 8-inch gun breech plug made in 1945. For the higher shots, we use 2 lbs. of FFFG black powder. All usual cannon-firing safety precautions, and more, are followed. Do not try this yourself unless you are experienced in black powder safety procedures.
Tracking Stars Orbiting the Milky Way's Central Black Hole [720p]
In a 16-year long study, using several of ESO's flagship telescopes, a team of German astronomers has produced the most detailed view ever of the surroundings of the monster lurking at our Galaxy's heart — a supermassive black hole. The research has unravelled the hidden secrets of this tumultuous region by mapping the orbits of almost 30 stars, a five-fold increase over previous studies. One of the stars has now completed a full orbit around the black hole. By watching the motions of 28 stars orbiting the Milky Way's most central region with admirable patience and amazing precision, astronomers have been able to study the supermassive black hole lurking there. It is known as "Sagittarius A*" (pronounced "Sagittarius A star"). The new research marks the first time that the orbits of so many of these central stars have been calculated precisely and reveals information about the enigmatic formation of these stars — and about the black hole to which they are bound. The interstellar dust that fills the Galaxy blocks our direct view of the Milky Way's central region in visible light. So astronomers used infrared wavelengths that can penetrate the dust to probe the region. While this is a technological challenge, it is well worth the effort. "The Galactic Centre harbours the closest supermassive black hole known. Hence, it is the best place to study black holes in detail," argues the study's first author, Stefan Gillessen. How Many Satellites Are Currently In Orbit Video
The most up-to-date data comes from CelesTrak which is funded by the Center for Space Standards and Innovation, located in Colorado Springs. As of this writing, there are over 13000 satellites in orbit (they CLAIM.. non black ops) and over 20500 satellites have decayed since 1957. Looking carefully at the data it appears that there are just under 3500 satellites that are both functioning and in their correct orbit compared to nearly 10000 that are classed as debris but haven't yet decayed. The images are the largest whole disk images of our planet, the resolution is 1 kilometer per pixel. The images are "masked" by a circular barrier that blocks out the light of the Sun and other stars. This is to prevent damage to the camera by exposure to direct sunlight. City lights are not visible because they are thousands of times less bright than the reflection of sunlight off the Earth. The images have been interpolated (blended) to create a smooth animation. Hey Guys No drums, no electric guitar or bass, just one acoustic guitar. I was jamming and I wrote this song in about 2 hours. I have to say, my playing skills on acoustic guitar are probably the worst so that's why it sounds not clean. I tried my best of course but it's still not good enough. Anyways it's more about to capture the idea and the feeling than having a high end studio version. For recording this guitar I used only a TASCAM DR-07. It's quite cheap compared to other recorders but it sounds not as bad as I thought! I hope you still like this stuff even if it's different. Thanks for your support and for watching my videos.
