Louis Andriessen - Image de Moreau - Ursula Oppens
I'm going to join in with the "post audio with picture" crowd with this upload. Here, Ursula Oppens plays Louis Andriessen's Image de Moreau. This is a piece which is supposed to be in the Sweelinck tradition of keyboard toccatas. It is also influenced by the paintings of Gustave Moreau, hence the title. It has a rather uncanny resemblance to the Prokofiev toccata at first.

Rzewski- The People United Will Never be Defeated
So, this is the second time I've uploaded this piece (I also have Drury's recording available). Here, however, is Ursula Oppens, in the premiere recording, and the recording that most consider to be the benchmark for the piece. Not as much muscle as Hamelin, but it feels much truer to the written music, assuming you're of the persuasion to think that means anything. In fact, assuming I can get a hold of Takahashi's, I might even upload it a third time xD

Morton Feldman - Spring of Chosroes (2/2)
Spring of Chosroes, for violin & piano (1978) Paul Zukofsky, violin Ursula Oppens, piano Morton Feldman's composing style started to change in the middle of the 1970s. While the delicacy, quiet dynamics, dissonance, and constantly evolving textures that were his music's hallmarks remained intact, in the last decade or so of his life he moved toward larger-scale works in which repetition -- sometimes literal, sometimes slightly varied rhythmically, melodically, or harmonically -- played an increasing role. In the essay Crippled Symmetry, which shares its title with one of those later compositions, Feldman refers to Spring of Chosroes in describing musical patterns or ideas that are "complete" in themselves and don't call for normal musical development, only for "extension." Even in a comparatively short work like the 15-minute Spring of Chosroes, this increased repetition and sense of scale is evident. Spring of Chosroes was written in 1978 and given its premiere on April 26, 1980, in New York City. The program note for that first performance alludes to a carpet -- made out of wool, silk, and silver and adorned with jewels -- supposedly owned by the renowned Persian king Chosroes (or Khosrau I) of the Sassanid dynasty (reigned 531 - 579). Feldman had a long-standing fascination with textiles, and their features informed many of his compositions. Spring of Chosroes is, as is so often the case with Feldman's compositions, predominantly quiet. Short phrases are tentatively ...
Elliott Carter - Piano Sonata - I. Maestoso - Legato scorrevole (1/2)
Elliott Carter (*1908) Piano Sonata I. Maestoso - Legato scorrevole II. Andante Ursula Oppens, piano "Shortly before going to Harvard [University] in 1926, Carter has recalled, 'I had already tried writing a very "advanced" and complicated piano sonata ... which I showed to Charles Ives at the time. He encouraged me to go on and become a composer, which I very much wanted to do, though for a long time I didn't admit this to my parents.' However, all traces of that early effort had disappeared by the time Carter embarked upon the present work, while his review of the belated but rapturously received premiere of Ives' Concord Sonata in 1939 showed that he now felt the music of his mentor was often confused and fell short of its aspirations. Meanwhile, he was well aware of his older friend [Aaron] Copland's formidable recent Piano Sonata (1943) and that his younger contemporary, Samuel Barber, was about to embark on an ambitious sonata for [pianist Vladimir] Horowitz. On the face of it, the 23-minute two-movement structure Carter completed in 1946, with the support of a Guggenheim Award, was milder in idiom than either the austere, hard-bitten Copland or the chromatically rampaging Barber, let alone the transcendentally dissonant Ives. Yet in its underlying concept and the clear-headedness with which it was realized, it was arguably the most radical of all. "For while the opening movement can be heard more or less as a traditional sonata form and the second comprises a fast ...

Elliott Carter: Duo for Violin and Piano [1/2]
Composed from 1973-74 and dedicated to Carter's wife, Helen. This is a live recording by Irvine Arditti and Ursula Oppens, originally aired over the radio somewhere in the late '90s. Just thought I'd upload this as a comparison to the commercially available recording by these two performers (which is out of print now, as is to be expected from a Disques Montaigne release).
Artur Schnabel - Sonata for Violin and Piano, III-IV
Sonata for Violin and Piano (1935) I. Allegro ma non troppo (quasi moderato e sempre semplice) II. Allegretto poco vivace III. Adagio IV. Vivace Paul Zukofsky, violin Ursula Oppens, piano Artur Schnabel (1882-1951) is still, as in his lifetime, known principally as one of the great pianists of this century, and one of the foremost Beethoven interpreters ever. What is not so known is that he was also a very active composer, writing throughout his lifetime, and towards the end of his life, concentrating more on his composing than his concertizing. A list of his compositions includes three symphonies, two other orchestral works, five string quartets, various other solo and chamber works, and song cycles. Despite the fact that Schnabel never performed contemporary music, his own music is extremely modern and individualistic, and in my opinion greatly influenced his piano playing. The plasticity of phrase and timing that he is so known for in Beethoven is seen clearly in his compositional concerns, which led him to write totally unbarred music, as well as music of extreme rhythmical sophistication. The Sonata for Violin and Piano was written in 1935, and given its premiere in 1944. If I were to suggest a somewhat more familiar work that appears similar to me in many ways, it would be the Duo by Roger Sessions, dating from 1942. Indeed, Sessions talked to me quite lovingly about his regular luncheon meetings with Schnabel, during which time Roger would ask Schnabel's advice ...
